COMMODORE S CORNER School has started for the 2013-2014 year. Even though I am only a substitute and do not expect to see much action this early, I am already assigned to work every day. Fortunately for me it is only the morning session. Another sub is doing the afternoon session. I am able to spend most of the day caring for Kathy who is coming along very well. She has regained most of her independence. We drove over to California Yacht Club in Marina Del Rey so we could have dinner with the Long Cruisers on their way north towards Santa Barbara. She really enjoyed the evening in their company as did I. The next fund raising event in support of The Children s Charity is a champagne brunch at Navy Yacht Club August 25 starting at 11:30. Navy Yacht Club is at 223 Marina Drive in Alamitos Bay right next to the Fire Dept. and fuel dock. Drop by and help support this worthy cause. Also of note is the Charity Regatta Sept. 22 sponsored by Alamitos Bay Yacht Club followed by hamburger bash and awards ceremony as well as the outstanding silent auction. Rodney Coomber Commodore VICE COMMODORE S CORNER The golden eve is all astir; and tides of sunset flood on us---incredible, miraculous. James Stephens How blessed we are to live in Southern California and enjoy the many sunsets in a mild climate without mosquitoes. We boaters in particular are happy to be able to enjoy our boats at the many harbors available to us up and down the California coast. Our next adventure is 26 miles across the sea. We are heading to the Isthmus on Sept 6-8. Some people are going early and some people are staying longer. We just hope you will join us on your boat or come across on the Catalina Express for a day of fun. On Saturday we are having an afternoon of activities, games, singing, and eating. In the evening we are having a barbeque. Larry is cooking brats. Everyone will bring a side dish to share with the group. Get your Blue Card to us ASAP and plan for a fun weekend. Hedy Codner, VC

2013 Long Cruise North Port Captain s Report Hedy Codner And it was summer, warm beautiful summer Hans Christian Anderson and the Long Cruise North started. Four boats, Sea Shanty, Sea Siren, Escapade, and Sea Scape headed north on Aug 9 th on an adventure to Santa Barbara. The seas were bumpy around the Palos Verdes Peninsula to Marina Del Rey. We had slips at the California Yacht Club and after Italian appetizers on Sea Siren, Wolfelt s boat, we went to CYC s dining room for a great dinner. We were joined by Commodore Rod Coomber and his wife Kathryn, who we were all glad to see. They were accompanied by Phil and Kathleen Collins and Trisha Jackson. Allen and Dianna Miles and their niece also joined us for a festive dinner. On Sunday August 11 th we traveled up to Oxnard and arrived at the Pacific Corinthian Yacht Club. Some of us swam in their pool and enjoyed their hot tub. Later we had dinner at their restaurant. On Monday night Marilyn and Charlie invited us aboard Sea Shanty for a Greek adventure. Watch out for that Ouzo! We continued up to Santa Barbara on Tuesday. Susanna and Doug Dworski arrived by car and met us with Margaritas and an enormous amount of food for a Mexican Fiesta. Corky and Phyllis Maywhort-also came and joined the fun. The next day Doug and Susana organized a full day of activities starting with a wine tasting at the Cork Winery. We visited a couple of more wineries and ended up on the Stern s Warf for a great lunch of rolls, lots of different cheeses, assorted meats and of course wine. That evening we had a fabulous dinner at the Palace Grill. The next day we slept in to recover before meeting with everyone for dinner at the Santa Barbara Yacht Club on the beach. On Friday August 16 th we headed south to Ventura. The seas were smooth and we flew. We stayed at the Ventura Isles Marina. We attended a free barbeque that the marina put on and I won $100 dollars. Actually I won $200 hundred dollars off slip fees. Of course I don t have a slip there so a number of people wanted to buy my ticket. I sold it to a couple sitting near us for $100 dollars. That evening Debbie Neal and Darrell Sausser entertained us on Escapade with an amazing amount of delicious food. On Sunday August 18 th we headed south again on very calm seas to the Channel Island Yacht Club. We had island hors d oeuvres on our boat Seascape. The next day we headed to Marina del Rey and dinner on Sea Shanty and Escapade headed home. Larry and I headed home the following day and traveled at 25 knots most of the way home on very calm seas. We had a great trip and hope everyone will join us next year on the Long Cruise South. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- THE FALL HARVEST CRUISE DATE HAS BEEN CHANGED TO OCTOBER 5 th. Jim and Mary Lium are in charge. We will be able to bring our boats and stay on the long dock at the Navy Yacht Club. Change the date on your calendar.
