Comosed during the summer o 1984 and comleted on 19 May 1984 at Yaddo which is located in aratoga rings, New York, the iece was commissioned by the Loomis Chaee chool in Windsor, Connecticut. It received its remiere erormance by the Loomis Chaee chool Chorus and Orchestra on 10 May 199 conducted by Mark Jon Gottschalk. 2) his work had the longest gestational eriod o any o Hagen s comositions thirty-three years. Hagen asked Robert chuneman, then President o EC Publishing, the ublisher o the work (then located in oston, M), to withdraw it until he had a chance to revise it. In 1999, Michael Haithcock and a consortium o college bands, commissioned a revised version, enabling Hagen to revisit the iece. t this oint the movement roe: the Diary was added, and the entire work was reorchestrated. he resulting work (which was comleted in New York City) was never erormed. Hagen again withdrew the iece until he was aroached by Mark Lawson, who had acquired EC Publishing and olded it into the EC Publishing Grou, and asked him to revisit it once more. ter thirty-three years, Hagen returned to the iece, revising it or sorano solo, chorus, and iano during the summer o 2017 in Rhinebeck, New York. he inal version was released by EC Publishing Grou in etember o 2017.
