TECHNICAL DETAILS LOCATION Ischia was populated since ancient times. When the volcano Rotaro showed its activity with a violent eruption, the Greeks fled: then the Saracens settled on Ischia. Aftert five hundred years, the Romans settled the island and founded the first spa. Initially (at the time of the Greeks) Ischia was called Pithekoussai, instead the Romans called it Aenaria. Since 1000 AD C. the island took the name of "Ischia" and then different names of Vandals and Byzantines, Saracens and Normans followed one another. Ischia passed under the domination of the Swabians, who in 1154 began building the castle, that was the seat of the governor and of the highest authorities. Their control lasted 100 years, then the Spanish and the French disputed the rights over the island and the castle. Following the control of the Angiò family Ischia returned under the Spanish occupation. In the XVII century, a plague struck the island claiming countless victims. The Bourbons and Napoleon reigned in the first half of the XIX century, until when, in 1986 thanks to Garibaldi, Italy was liberated and it was unified to the nation. Finally, the last settlement of the island was from 1942 to 1944 by the German soldiers. Since 1956, Ischia had a significant and progressive turistic development, thanks to the modern equipment and the construction of the hotel.
