Willowra Location: 220 km s North West of Alice Springs Population: 250 History Willowra was the name of a former pastoral lease; it now is the name of an Aboriginal community (located some 330 kilometres north west of Alice Springs). The hearing of the Lander Warlpiri, Anmatjirra (Anmatyerre) (Willowra Pastoral Lease) Land Claim in the late 1970s served as a important inter-cultural forum for Aboriginal people of the area to write their views into history; the eventual granting of freehold title to the land provided the foundation for authorship of their lives. Governance Some Local Government functions at the community of Willowra are also currently administered by Yuendumu Community Government Council. Access It takes 3 ½ hours to drive from Alice Springs. The road is sealed for the first 180 km from Alice Springs and the rest of the way is formed and largely gravelled. The road can be quite corrugated but is usually passable for ordinary vehicles except after heavy rain falls Willowra also has an airstrip. 5

The Clinic The Health Service is in the Alice Springs district Health Service operated by:- The WYN Primary Health Care Zone services Yuendumu, Willowra and Nyirrpi communities and their outstations. Accommodation/Vehicles There are 2 vehicles allocated to the Zone. Evacuation is almost always by air with the second option being by road. Patient Assisted Travel is available to patients from the Health Clinic. There is no tourist accommodation at Willowra. Council runs a guest house for visiting contractors, temporary employees and people conducting business in the community. Keeping the peace Willowra also has a police station which houses three officers. The officers moved to Willowra in 2007 to establish the first police presence in this town. 6
