Auckland 2012 1 ABOUT WCTE 2012 The WCTE, the prestigious international meeting for timber engineering, is organised every two years by countries with a rich history in timber structures and an advanced industrial and academic background in the wood sector. After 11 successful conferences the 12 th edition of the WCTE in 2012 will take place in Auckland, New Zealand. Over the years, the number of conference attendees has continued to increase, with over 550 participants, together with various commercial exhibitors, expected to attend the New Zealand meeting. INVITATION On behalf of the Australian and New Zealand conference steering committee we invite you to participate in the sponsorship and exhibition programme for WCTE 2012. The 12 th will be held at the SKYCITY Convention Centre in Auckland, New Zealand, July 2012. This is the most prestigious international event that brings together engineers, manufacturers, architects, designers, managers, researchers and academics to present and discuss the latest developments in timber engineering, engineered wood products and design of timber structures. This event is held every two years to foster international collaboration in technological developments in the timber industry. It will have keynote sessions and educational presentations that disseminate research, inspire designers, increase research and design capability, awareness of new applications, and advanced implementation of timber in large scale construction. We are offering numerous sponsorship and exhibition opportunities designed to provide maximum value and exposure to our supporters. As always this event features extensive networking opportunities which will be offered in the midst of the industry exhibition. The WCTE 2012 exhibition is the perfect opportunity to showcase your products and services to a targeted, global audience. Strategically located to maximise exposure, the opportunity is available to a limited number of exhibitors, so make sure you reserve your space early. For more information and to apply for sponsorship and exhibition opportunities, please visit www.wcte2012.com. Warm regards Hugh Morris WCTE 2012 Conference Chair

2 Auckland 2012 WELCOME TO AUCKLAND Auckland s waterside location has fostered the locals love affair with the sea, earning this place the nickname City of Sails. Auckland sprawls over a narrow isthmus between the sparkling waters of the Waitemata and Manukau Harbours. A cloak of rainforest covers the surrounding hills, dozens of dormant volcanic cones dot the landscape and enchanting holiday islands are scattered throughout the vast Hauraki Gulf. Two of the best island getaways are Waiheke Island and Great Barrier Island. Auckland s heart beats to a Polynesian rhythm, its people a melting pot of European, South Pacific and Asian cultures and a strong indigenous Maori heritage. This diversity brings with it an abundance of unique dining and shopping experiences. Auckland s temperate climate, easy access to the coast and variety of activities earn the city consistent top five rankings in international lifestyle surveys. Discover for yourself why it is one of New Zealand s best destinations. VENUE The SKYCITY Auckland Convention Centre is the venue for WCTE 2012 and is located in the heart of Auckland City. It is a world-class facility that adjoins one of New Zealand s most popular leisure destinations, SKYCITY with its two casinos, 18 restaurants and bars, Sky Tower, theatre, the 316-room five star Grand Hotel, and the 4+ star, 344-room SKYCITY Hotel all on site. There are an additional 1,500 hotel rooms within a five minute walk and it is conveniently centred between Queen Street (the central city s premier retail strip) and The Viaduct, home to some of the city s most popular waterside dining and night spots.
