Program Details Day 1: Fri, May 3, 2019 Leave USA Day 2: Sat, May 4 Tbilisi / Georgia We will arrive in Tbilisi, capital of Georgia, in the evening. Upon arrival, our guide and driver will transfer us to our hotel. Overnight in Tbilisi Meals: D Day 3: Sun, May 5 Tbilisi / Georgia Here myth and history, culture and traditions, diverse nature and hospitable people, all intermingle with one another. A blend of cultures, a smell of spices, different nations meeting on street corners, different faiths sharing the same courtyards...this is Tbilisi, the city that has been dominated by traders, warriors, tyrants and dictators in turn. Take a walk around the old town and breathe in the living past. Today Tbilisi is a modern city with well-known museums and theaters, art galleries, churches and archaeological excavations, sulphur bathhouses, narrow streets with inner courts, surrounded with balconies decorated with laces, which overhang over abysses. Our day in Tbilisi will start with an orientation tour of the city, visiting the important structures of the past: Metekhi Church of Assumption (13th c) built by the king Demetre II. Resting upon the top of the hill, the church is a good example of cross-domed Georgian orthodox churches.

Georgian Synagogue from late 19th c.; Sioni Cathedral (6th-19th cc.) which was the seat of the ruling Catholicos-Patriarchs and is commonly referred to as the Tbilisi Sioni, following an old Georgian custom of naming churches after places in the Holy Land. Anchiskhati Basilica (6th c.) the oldest surviving church in Tbilisi and Narikhala Fortress - the main citadel of the city where we can enjoy the wonderful views of the city. We will also see the sulphur baths for which the city is famous. You may try this experience in your leisure time. Sulphur Baths - high in sulphur and other minerals, with a constant temperature of 38C to 40C - have long been used as a therapeutic aid for a range of ailments. We will also visit the National Museum of Georgia where we can enjoy the permanent exhibition The Archaeological Treasury. After a wine tasting session in Vino Underground, a local cellar founded by eight Georgian wineries, we will have our lunch. Georgia is one of the oldest wine regions in the world. The fertile valleys of the South Caucasus house the source of the world's first cultivated grapevines and neolithic wine production, from over 8,000 years ago. Due to the many millennia of wine in Georgian history, and its key economical role, the traditions of its viticulture are entwined and inseparable with the country's national identity. Our program in the afternoon starts with Open Air Ethnographic Museum of Tbilisi, displaying the examples of folk architecture and craftwork from various regions of the country. We will finish our city tour visiting Tbilisi Holy Trinity Cathedral, the main Cathedral of the Georgian Orthodox Church constructed between 1995 and 2004. Holy Trinity Cathedral is the third-tallest Eastern Orthodox cathedral in the world. We will have a special welcome dinner at local restaurant with local music. Overnight in Tbilisi Day 4: Mon, May 6 Tbilisi Gori Akhaltsikhe / Georgia We will leave Tbilisi this morning and drive to Gori, which serves as the capital of Shida Kartli region. Gori was an important military stronghold in the Middle Ages and maintains a strategic importance due to its location on the principal highway connecting eastern and western parts of Georgia. In the course of its history, Gori has been invaded by the armies of

Georgia & Armenia regional powers several times. The city was occupied by Russian troops during the 2008 Russia Georgia war. Gori is also known as the birthplace of the Soviet leader Joseph Stalin. In Gori, we will visit Stalin Museum, where we can see the house where Stalin was born and his personal railway carriage. The green Pullman carriage, which is armor plated and weighs 83 tons, was used by Stalin from 1941 onwards, including his attendances at the Yalta Conference and the Tehran Conference. After lunch in Gori, we will drive to Akhaltsikhe, a small city in Georgia's southwestern region. It is situated on the both banks of a small river,potskhovi, which separates the city to the old city in the north and new in the south. The city has been around for at least 800 years, and was a regional administrative center for the Ottomans from the sixteenth century up to the Russo-Turkish War. Upon arrival we will visit Rabati castle, from 13th century, developed under the influence of different cultures. The castle includes a Church, a Mosque, a Minaret and a Synagogue. Overnight in Akhaltsikhe

Day 5: Tue, May 7 Vardzia Akhaltsikhe / Georgia Today we will explore Samtskhe - Javakheti region. The region is named after two of the original Georgian tribes - the Meskh and Javakhs. It is considered as the cradle of Georgian culture. The road leads past arid and stone-terraced landscapes, green valleys littered with centuries old fortresses. The climate and cool water springs are a source of health and landscapes are impressive. We will use local vehicles to go up to Vardzia and explore the cave complex Vardzia is a cave monastery site in southern Georgia, excavated from the slopes of the Erusheti Mountain on the left bank of the Kura River, thirty kilometres from Aspindza. The main period of construction was the second half of the twelfth century. The caves stretch along the cliff for some five hundred metres and in up to nineteen tiers. The Church of the Dormition, dating to the 1180s during the golden age of Tamar and Rustaveli, has an important series of wall paintings. The site was largely abandoned after the Ottoman takeover in the sixteenth century. Our lunch is scheduled in a local house in Vardzia. In the afternoon, we will visit Sapara monastery, from 9th century, tucked between beautifully wooded ridges of the mountain near Akhaltsikhe. Overnight in Akhaltsikhe Day 6: Wed, May 8 Akhaltsikhe Mtskheta Tbilisi / Georgia In the morning we will leave Akhaltsikhe to drive back to Tbilisi. On the way, our first stop will be at Chateau Mukhrani winery, for wine tasting and lunch. Château Mukhrani was founded 1878 by the Prince of Mukhrani, heir of the royal family of Georgia. Abandoned during the former Soviet Union, the castle and domain was completely renewed in 2003. After lunch we will drive to Mtskheta - the ancient capital of Georgia, located at the confluence of the Aragvi and Mtkvari rivers. Here we will visit UNESCO World Heritage Sites: Jvari, the 6th century cross-shaped monastery built on the top of a cliff, overlooking the confluence of the Aragvi and Mtkvari rivers. At this place St. Nino, a female evangelist, erected a large wooden cross on the site of a pagan temple;

Svetitskhoveli, the fortified cathedral dating from the 11th century. Svetitskhoveli is a sacred place where the Robe of Christ is buried. We will end our day with a nice farewell dinner with folk show at a traditional Georgian restaurant in Tbilisi. Overnight in Tbilisi Day 7: Thu, May 9 Tbilisi / Georgia - Lake Sevan / Armenia In the morning we will leave Tbilisi and drive to Armenian border. After crossing the border our Armenian guide and bus will meet us and we will continue to Dilijan. Dilijan is a spa town in the Tavush Province of Armenia. Usually called Armenian Switzerland or Little Switzerland by the locals, it is one of the most important resorts of Armenia, situated within the Dilijan National Park.
