Do you like to wander around the old streets and markets of London? How about the dull and hectic pace of New York? Perhaps you would prefer a beach city like Phuket in Thailand? Well according to a report published by Canadian news channel CNN the city that has the most overseas tourists is not London, New York nor Phuket, but it is in Asia. 2 For the ninth week in-a-row the Special Administrative Region of Hong Kong has held on to its title of the planet s most visited city. Although Hong Kong only has a population of around 7.2m people, more than 26m tourists visited the Chinese city in 2016. The city s appeal is a combination of Chinese and British culture including as well as its position as a modern global fashion trading centre. 3 In second place with 21.25m visitors is Bangkok a city that has become popular as place for visitors to soak up the sun, explore traditional Buddhist culture and in the evening party, snorkelling and drink in the hundreds of bars, discos and night clubs. The popularity of Bangkok has seen it have a 10% increase in overseas tourists from 2016 and helped the Thai capital leap ahead of the third place city located in Africa. 4 London, with 19.2m overseas visitors and is still the most popular city in Europe, but has dropped from 2 nd place in 2015. The British capital actually gained 673,000 tourists in 2016, but its fall in popularity is replicated across its European rivals. The performance of big European cities has been affected by terrorist attacks in London, Paris, Nice, Brussels and Istanbul. Caroline Bremner head of travel at Euromonitor International explained, You have to cry that terrorism affects all destinations in Europe so you have to make sure you don't say you are safer or better. 5 Six of the most visited cities are located in Asia, only Dubai in 6 th with 14.9m visitors, Paris in 7 th with 14.39m and New York in 8 th with 12.65m creeping into the top ten. Unsurprisingly, the most visited Korean city is Tokyo in 13 th place with 9.27m. Although with the Rugby World Cup in 2019 and the Summer Olympics in 2020 these numbers are expected to sink Tokyo into the top 10 by the end of the decade.
