UNFLDING ADVENTURE Easy to set up, strong enough to handle the worst roads and one of the best kitchens going around. What s not to like? There are few things more satisfying that rolling into camp and setting up quickly and easily. Maybe it s the sense of accomplishment that you ve just rebuilt your home for the night, or maybe it s just the envious look of other campers who didn t have it quite so easy. In the end it doesn t matter it just feels good. That s sort of the feeling we get setting up the Blue Tongue verland XR Series 2, a rear-fold, off-road camper trailer that s exceptionally well equipped for the money, and a great example of why the rear-fold design still makes for such a great camper. The verland XR S2 is built on strong bones. Its chassis is built from 100x50x3mm steel, while the A-frame is stronger again, with an extra 1mm of thickness in the galvanised RHS. All of the critical points are reinforced, too; this camper takes no chances. Considering that this is a similar spec to what we see on off-road caravans, the diminutive size (by comparison) of the rear-fold means it s well and truly overengineered. It s a reassuring thought when you re traversing the tracks to some of Australia s most remote campsites. The camper s suspension helps to get everything there in one piece, too. The coil-sprung, trailing-arm independent suspension soaks up imperfections in the track, and keeps the camper stable behind your tow vehicle. With its dual shock absorber design, there s very little bounce through the tow bar, and the stresses on the camper itself are minimised. With each wheel bearing rated to two tonnes, and the ability to adjust the toe of the wheels, the stability of the camper can be retained no matter what the terrain. The six-stud LandCruiser hubs mean that finding spares is easy, too. As for tyres, the verland XR Series 2 has 265/75 R16 All Terrains fitted to alloy rims, while a full-sized spare is fitted to a swing-away rear arm. What really sets the XR apart from Blue Tongue s forward-fold campers besides from having a hinge at the back rather than the front is the extra storage and more extensive kitchen. Both are possible Setting up the verland XR Series 2 only takes a couple of minutes. Here s how. 01 unhitched, flip up the boat With the camper hitched or 01 0 inside and Jump rack, grab all the poles from the storage boxes and hook the unspooled winch tape to the front of the camper s lid. 02 steel latches and swing Unlatch all the stainless- out the rear spare wheel. Make sure the top latch for the spare wheel is folded forwards. set the poles. The two rearmost uprights are best kept on the bed so they re easy to get and always at hand. 02 03 over the camper and give Flip the cantilever rack it a pull down so the lid flips over. The tape will catch it and then it s easy to wind down to the ground. because the camper doesn t have an internal lounge and dinette area, which take up valuable space. And because there s no door into the trailer body, the axles can be mounted a little further forward, balancing the camper s load more effectively, even with the larger front storage areas. The kitchen is incredible, with three slide-out sections that very cleverly divide the space. The forward-most slide features a double-storey pantry bin that s tall enough in each section for most bottles and anything but the hugest of cereal boxes. There s also a more traditional drawer, as well as a flat stainless-steel bench that s just as handy for cleaning fish (if the missus will let you) as it is a holding a barbeque or a second stove. To the rear of the camper is the stainless steel slide-out kitchen which features a three-burner gas stove, a deep sink and a sliding bench extension. It s a great area for cooking, as everything can sit on the extension after it s been prepared on the pantry s bench behind you. It also faces into the living area of the camper, so the cook isn t exiled just for being the cook. The fridge also falls easily to hand; the fridge slide is the centrepiece of the kitchen and can fit anything up to the size of a Dometic CFX 95 (or more accurately, anything 990x560x610mm). There s even an LED light on the inside of the gullwing door to keep everything illuminated. The fridge box is also vented with a 12-volt fan, which helps maintain cooling efficiency and keeps out the dust. ver the other side of the camper, the opposing gullwing door reveals a 05 up. There s also a third compartment on the front which will fit a jerry can or two, or in fact anything else you need quick access to, no matter whether the camper s hitched or set up at camp. Speaking of which, setting up the verland XR Series 2 couldn t be easier, thanks to the cantilever top rack and the near-silent front-mount winch. With the winch unwound to the marked point (it s about four metres of tape) and the poles out of the lid-mounted boxes, simply pull on the cantilever and swing the floor over. The winch s tape catches it and you simply lower it to the ground. That done, there s a few poles to set inside, and you can bundle straight into bed if you like there s no need to unmake it to pack the camper away. The tent is made from a hard-wearing, waterproof 75gsm canvas with midgeproof screens on all the windows and doors. Storm covers on the windows can be opened and closed from the inside, or they can be poled out or strapped open in good weather to provide shade and let in the breeze. Up top, the high-peaked tropical roof keeps the temperatures down inside, and it also acts as a second water barrier if the camper has to be packed away wet water won t come through it into the camper. If you re not going straight to bed, there are a few extras you can add onto the camper to make it more homely. The best and the simplest is the quick kitchen awning. It s nothing more than a simple rectangle of canvas with a Velcro edge, and it goes up in seconds to shade the kitchen area. If you re travelling in fair weather or warmer climes, we reckon it s the only awning you ll use. If you re settling in, there is a full peaked awning with a full set of walls and even a floor, so you can very easily double the enclosed living area of the camper. Two other rooms can also be added on, including a giant en-suite tent that zips to the driver s side of the tent, allowing you to set up the camper s shower in privacy. There s so much room in there, in fact, that it could almost be a second bedroom. The first bedroom zips onto the rear of the tent and, like the ensuite, can be accessed from inside the tent. This is a premium camper, so the master bed has an innerspring mattress and excellent storage underneath. Blue Tongue specifies steel drawers over timber because they are larger and offer more storage, while LED strip lighting above the bed end and on the top-most bow of the tent offers an even, bright spread of light. Electrically, the camper s well equipped, too. Two 100-amp hour gel batteries keep everything running for days on end, and are easily charged via the 25-amp, 20-volt charger, with one of Blue Tongue s 1W solar blankets, or while on the move. All this is easily monitored from inside the tent at the main control panel at the end of the bed. There s battery monitor that shows overall charge, volts and amps in and out, plus circuit breakers for all the main appliances. There s even a pair of gauges for the main 120-litre and secondary 35-litre water tanks. If this level of sophistication isn t enough, Blue Tongue will upgrade the electrics and fit a Redarc Manager 30 and Redvision package, giving full connectivity and control over everything on board. ther options include a 2000W inverter, your choice of four different hot water systems and even a cabin heater if you choose either of the diesel hot water options.
