NOHOANGA SITE INFORMATION SHEET LAKE HAWEA TIMARU RIVER (TIMARU CREEK) Getting there From the West Coast Wanaka highway (SH6), turn off at the dam and drive through Hawea Township until you join up with Timaru River Road. The road is gravel and crosses several small stream crossings (these do not always have water in them). After crossing the Timaru River bridge take the first side road on the left and follow the track past the Public Camping Ground down to the edge of Lake Hawea. The Public Camping Ground is signposted. For further information phone 0800 NOHOANGA or email nohoanga@ngaitahu.iwi.nz Page 1 of 5

Physical description The nohoanga is an excellent site with plenty of shelter and good camping sites. The site is located on the shores of Lake Hawea in close proximity to the Timaru River. There are no markers or signage. Vehicle access and parking The public road to the site passes through farmland so stock may have access to the road. The dirt road leading into the site is narrow and steep in some places. Access to the site may prove difficult for larger vehicles and caravans / campervans. Facilities and services The are no facilities on the Lake Hawea Timaru River (Timaru Creek) nohoanga site itself. Site users need to provide their own toilet (portaloo or chemical toilet) and shower facilities. Nohoanga site users are required to provide their own water supplies. There is a public camping area adjoining the nohoanga site with a toilet (long drop) that nohoanga users can use. However, this toilet is also available for use by the general public. It is also not serviced on a regular basis so care should be taken to ensure that it remains in a clean and tidy condition. Toilet paper is not supplied. There is cell phone reception on this site. All rubbish and waste must be removed on departure. See key contacts below for details of refuse and dumping stations. For further information phone 0800 NOHOANGA or email nohoanga@ngaitahu.iwi.nz Page 2 of 5

Hazards Visit the Ngai Tahu website www.ngaitahu.iwi.nz/environment/nohoanga for up to date information regarding hazards. No dogs permitted during December and January. Any other time of the year campers will be required to obtain and produce on demand a certificate certifying that any dog on site is free of all diseases. Fire restrictions may apply to this area. Please contact the Otago Rural Fires Authority or the Department of Conservation Wanaka Area Office to check if a permit is required. Note by using the Laka Hawea Timaru River (Timaru Creek) nohoanga site you are agreeing to these conditions.
