I would first like to thank Jim Dubea, our immediate past President, for his excellent leadership and dedication this past year. Jim was instrumental in navigating the Club through some very important issues including helping establish the Maritime Academy at Rockledge High School and having our Club selected to host the 2017 International Convention. I also want to thank all the past Presidents and former Board members for their prior service, it has been my distinct privilege to work with many of them over the last four years. Many continue to volunteer and lead the Club s activities. We are very fortunate to have a strong Port Canaveral Board and I am confident that their leadership and guidance will allow our Club to further our Maritime mission. The mission of the Propeller Club of Port Canaveral is to serve the Central Florida Maritime Community and to ensure that Port Canaveral remains a world leader in maritime commerce while promoting a healthy marine environment. One way we continue to do this is by maintaining a large and active Club. I am pleased to announce that we have over 115 members and continue to grow. Our partners have also continued to grow, with two Admiral level, four Captain level and 18 First Mate level Partners for 2016 thanks to all our Partners for their continued support. A second way we continue our mission is through education and outreach. Last year the Club actively worked with Brevard County School to develop a formal maritime education curriculum and resulted in a new Maritime Academy at Rockledge High School. In addition, many Club members support Canaveral Port Authority with their Embark program helping to educate middle school students getting them excited about the opportunities in the maritime industry. We have many exciting actives on deck for this year s Club program. Our largest, signature event is ShrimpFeast slated for April 15th at the Coast Guard station. Our monthly luncheon guest speakers are leaders in the maritime industry bringing together many people who work in the maritime industry along with local leaders in the community. These events are always fun and an important way to maintain a strong and active maritime community. Also, our Club has been selected to host the 2017 International Propeller Club Convention. This will be a great way to highlight the huge growth of the Port and the strength of our maritime community to the International Club membership and leadership look for ways to help support this great opportunity for our Club. We are fortunate to have a very active Club with many members stepping up to Haul the Line support some many Club activities. Continue to look for ways to be involved. I appreciate everyone s support and look forward to having a fun, productive, and rewarding year.

Page 20 Propeller Club Port Canaveral News Next cleanup: April 9 Thank you to all who came out to the Keep Brevard Beautiful Adopt-a-Shore Clean Up Day on Saturday, February 6. The Propeller Club designated shore area is along the barge canal at the north end of North Banana River Drive on Merritt Island. Our members hold Clean Up Days every other month, usually the first Saturday. Save the date for our next one April 9!!! Our core group of volunteers is always looking for "new blood" to come and help out!

Winter Edition 2016 Page 21 Salty Fun Facts (by Earl McMillin) Did you know you that Many famous folks have served in the U.S. Coast Guard. You know a few, Wayne Justice, Bob Merrilees, Jim Dubea and Jim Underwood. Here are some more names of Coast Guardsmen that may come as a surprise: Blake Edwards, the guy who created the Pink Panther flics and was married to Julie Andrews. Buddy Ebsen a/k/a Jed Clampett of the Beverly Hillbillies. Alex Haley, author of the bestseller, Roots. Interestingly, the USCG has a cutter named for Alex Haley. Who knew!?! Have a happy. ~Earl McMillin Info and photo below courtesy of Dennis Thompson Guess what was found at the end of the Barge Canal near Propeller Park! Actually its a prototype that is being refurbished to be use as an educational aid for school kids. It will be floated by barge to different cities- beginning with the Mississippi River. Another day on the Space Coast!

Who We Are Propeller Club of Port Canaveral PO Box 501 Cape Canaveral, FL 32920 propellerclubcanaveral@gmail.com We are on the web! http://www.propellerclubcanaveral.com We are a local chapter of the International Propeller Club of the United States and we support Port Canaveral and area businesses, the maritime industry, the U.S. Merchant Marine, the U.S. Coast Guard and the U.S. Armed Forces, especially our local units in the port community. The club's single most important function is to foster relationship-building and facilitate communication among Port Canaveral stakeholders and area business owners and managers. We do this by hosting monthly luncheons featuring guest speakers covering topics of interest including updates on the various projects being developed in the Port, hosting forums highlighting candidates for the Port Commission and other local elected positions, and hosting special events during the year such as our annual Shrimpfeast at the Coast Guard Station, our VIP viewing of the fireworks at the Port in July and our Christmas Party. We also provide opportunities for giving back to the community through support of several charitable organizations and scholarships for High School graduates pursuing maritime-related college or career training. We believe that in this day and age where so much communication is done electronically, it is more important than ever to enjoy a few moments of personal conversation and "face time" with our fellow port community members at our events. Propeller Club Port Canaveral is on Facebook!! Come and like us to join the conversation!
