Specially protected nature areas in Latvia categories 4 Strict Nature Reserves 4 National Parks 9 Protected Landscape Areas 42 Nature Parks 261 Nature Reserves 7 Marine Protected Areas 333 sites 1 Biosphere Reserve 355 Nature Monuments Microreserves

Main functions of NCA Management of nature protection plans for protected territories and endangered species Implement the functions of supervision of The Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) Coordination of administration and management of specially protected areas Maintain records on scientific research in specially protected areas

Main functions of NCA Cooperation with local authorities, tourism entrepreneurs, non-governmental organizations and education institutions to promote nature conservation Educate and inform the society about nature conservation.

Data on specially protected nature areas (boundaries, zones), microreserves, species and habitats and other nature data are available in the national nature data system OZOLS http://ozols.daba.gov.lv/pub/ (information available in Latvian)

Related projects Nature Census (Dabas skaitīšana), 2016-2020, EU Cohesion Fund inventory of EU importance habitats (Habitats Directive, Annex I) in the territory of Latvia 20 nature management plans for Natura 2000 sites 5 species protection plans Substantial contribution to knowledge on habitat and species distribution, areas and quality, especially outside Natura 2000!

Related projects Integration of specially protected nature territories of Latvia in spatial plans, 2014-2016, 4.3-24/NFI/INP-003 (Norway Grants) Planning of nature management, integration of the nature management plans into municipal spatial plans (15 management plans developed)

Several wetland habitat restoration projects LIFE Conservation of wetlands in Kemeri National Park (2002 2006), LIFE10 NAT/LV/000160 HYDROPLAN LIFE Restoring the hydrological regime of Ķemeri National Park (2011 2019), LIFE10 NAT/LV/000160 HYDROPLAN LIFE Forest Habitat Restoration within the Gauja National Park, LIFE10 NAT/LV/000159 Restoration of bogs (filling in the ditches, building peat dams), re-meandering of streams and restoring floodplain functions, improving the conditions of shallow coastal lake, etc.

Related projects Recently the borders of nature monuments (a form of protected nature areas, totally 178) geological and geomorphological monuments, including springs and spring complexes were revised. A proposal for changes in boundaries are submitted for official proposal. We expect that soon a new regulation should be approved adjusted boundaries, better protection.

GoundEco role of the NCA (PP 5) Data exchange (e.g. habitat and vegetation data) Development of conceptual models and assessment of pilot groundwater dependent ecosystems data interpretation, recommendations for the identification and monitoring In the pilot area: habitat research using the national methodology; mapping of vegetation and research on invertebrates communities (in-depth analysis) Dissemination of the results
