1 Welcome to Stockholm Stockholm is a city of contrasts. A modern capital with a flourishing business life, rich in culture and history as well as in cutting edge research and technology. An easily accessible city where almost everything is within walking distance. The Swedish capital successfully combines an interesting past and an exciting future. A walk through the city offers the narrow alleys and medieval buildings of the Old Town as well as the concrete and glass architecture of the modern city. In Stockholm, nature is always close at hand. As the city is built on 14 islands, the water is always present; it accounts for a third of Stockholm s total area. The other two-thirds are parklands and built-up areas in about equal proportions. 25 minutes from the centre of Stockholm you find the Archipelago with its 24,000 islands. Discover your own island. Each one has its special charm; most offer a peaceful atmosphere, while some also have a vibrant pulse. There is so much to discover, whether you take a short trip or choose to go further a field. For further information about Stockholm please visit: www.stockholmtown.com Conference venue The conference will be held at the Stockholm City Conference Centre (CCC), Norra Latin, 6-10 October 2003. Norra Latin is a former grammar school, inaugurated in 1880. More than hundred years later, the school was closed and the classrooms were converted into meeting rooms. After the renovation, Norra Latin was opened in 1989 for conference guests. How to get to the conference venue Airport buses leave Arlanda Airport every 5 10 minutes for the City Terminal in central Stockholm. The bus ride takes approximately 40 minutes and costs SEK 80 (USD 10.33, June 2003). The fast train service, Arlanda Express, also takes you to the City Terminal. The trip takes 20 minutes and a one-way ticket costs SEK 180 (USD 23.25, June 2003). Taxis are available outside the airport arrival hall. Prices may vary considerably, therefore you are advised to ask for the price before entering the taxi. Many taxi companies offer a fixed price of SEK 390 475 (USD 50.38-61.36, June 2003) and the driver is obliged to give you a printed receipt upon request. The Stockholm City Conference Centre (CCC), is situated by the square, Norra Bantorget, in the heart of central Stockholm. It is merely a five-minute walk from the City Terminal from where airport buses, Arlanda Express and the subway depart.

Buses will depart from Norra Latin in time for delegates to visit the open air museum of Skansen before dinner. Skansen is the first open-air museum in the world. It was founded in 1891 for the purpose of showing how people had lived and worked in different parts of Sweden in times gone by. Skansen is also a zoological park specialising mainly in Nordic fauna. It is located on the island of Djurgården, a royal park near the centre of Stockholm. Over the years about 150 historic buildings have been moved here from nearly every part of Sweden. Most of them date from the 18th and 19th centuries. Visitors to the houses and farmsteads are met by hosts and hostesses in period costume. They often demonstrate domestic occupations, such as weaving and spinning.

4 Technical tours Swedish Nuclear and Waste Management Co, SKB, arranges and is the sponsor of two technical tours before and after the conference. A limited number of places are available for the technical tours. Reservations will be made on a first come first served basis. It is recommended that you wear casual clothing and comfortable walking shoes for all technical tours. For additional information on SKB please visit their web site at: www.skb.se Sunday, 5 October Nuclear Waste Facilities in Forsmark Price: 200 SEK (USD 25.84, June 2003) The Swedish Nuclear Fuel and Waste management Co (SKB) shows the facilities and projects in Forsmark A two hour guided bus tour north from Stockholm takes us to SFR, Final Repository for Radioactive Operational Waste. The facility is situated nearby the nuclear power station in Forsmark, in the archipelago of the Baltic Sea. The view from the SFR site is remarkable! The facility is a final repository constructed approximately 50 metres below the bottom of the sea. The guided tour takes you down the tunnel system and you also pay a visit to the underground exhibition. The site investigation is located in the vicinity and the tour also visits the drilling sites. We will enjoy a nice lunch in the old village of Forsmark at the Forsmark s Inn, which is situated by a small lake. Programme, 5 October: 09.00 The bus leaves from Stockholm, CCC, Norra Latin. At the CLAB facility all Swedish spent fuel is stored. The storage is situated 25 metres down in the bedrock and consists of big water ponds. The tour visits the main parts of the interim storage facility including the fuel ponds. Äspö Hard Rock Laboratory, HRL, is constructed in the old Swedish granite bedrock down to 450 metres. The laboratory tunnel is 3.5 kilometres long. A bus takes you down to the laboratory where you visit several experimental sites and a fullscale demonstration on the deposition of canisters. The HRL project is a dress rehearsal of the Swedish deposition method for spent fuel. During the tour it is also possible to visit a drill site on the site investigation located in the vicinity.
