C.C.P.O.A. 1775 Mackenzie Drive, Cedar Rapids, IA 52411-9596 CCPOA@linncounty.org (319) 892-6452 Soon-to-be web presence at: MyCountyParks.com VOLUME XXIV PRE-WORKSHOP 2009 ISSUE IV From the President - Richard Paris, Marion County Conservation Hopefully everyone has survived the onslaught of staycationers this summer and has not pulled too much hair out. Some of our association members can ill afford to lose many more strands of those golden locks! Camp Dodge delivered some hair raising information that dropped a fly in the soup a couple of weeks ago, not just a house fly, but a Luna Moth sized fly! It was recently brought to the attention of the Executive Committee that the base was shutting down the shooting ranges the first week of August and would not be available again until next year, due to emergency repairs to sewage lagoons down range. After some quick scrambling, an internet search by Chief Firearms Instructor Fundermann and a couple of emails, the Executive Committee secured the Olofson Shooting Range near Big Creek Park. This facility is a little rough, but with a little innovation our firearms training day will still be top of the line. The evening portion of our training will return to Ranges S13 and S14 at Camp Doge. Directions to the Olofson Range are included in this newsletter. The range is approximately 15 minutes northeast of Camp Dodge, just northwest of Polk City. Also in this newsletter you will find an agenda, registration forms, lodging information and other informative tidbits. Please expedite the return of your registration materials to assist with final arrangements for meals and those highly anticipated coffee breaks. There is no better stress release than to vent frustrations with your peers. Looking forward to chatting in a few weeks. More later... Rich Iowa's Oldest County Park Your 2008-2010 CCPOA Executive Committee: (Seated L-R) Brian Lammers (Hamilton), Bob Urbain (Benton), Tucker Anderson (Clayton), Nick Beeck (Plymouth), Pat Shehan (Webster); (Standing) Roger Kean (Scott), Bob Fundermann (Woodbury) Rich Paris (Marion), and Tom Hazelton (Linn). [Not pictured: Pie Reighard (Keokuk)] EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE PLANNING SESSION Your CCPOA Executive met last month in Hamilton County. Once again a planning session for future considerations of the CCPOA was discussed. An updated mission statement was adopted and reads: To improve the quality of law enforcement in the County Conservation Board System of Iowa by promoting professionalism through training. The committee also discussed planning details for the 25 th Anniversary of the CCPOA to be commemorated at the 2010 Fall Workshop. Hope to collect some previous workshop gimmees and merchandise for display next fall, any contributions are welcome. Attending his first regular meeting as an At Large member was Nick Beeck of Plymouth County. Look forward to Nick s contributions and also to continue to add some of our younger members to the Executive Committee.

C.C.P.O.A. FIREARMS TRAINING DAY 9/28/09 2009 UPDATE Your CCPOA Firearms Training Team has had more than a few challenges in putting this year s training exercise together including an almost complete change of venue. They will do their best to keep much of the day similar to previous years: Two daytime qualification courses, a bulls-eye drill, the subdued lighting course in the evening, and some classroom time on malfunctions & reloading drills. We will again offer the shotgun course of fire as the last daytime relay before evening meal break. This shotgun qualification course is for those who want to qualify with the shotgun they carry on duty. Features in store for 2009 #1) We will be again doing the reloading and malfunctioning drills. It is a survival skill you need to practice on a regular basis. (We will utilize CCPOA dummy rounds for these exercises); #2) FBI Q targets will be used for both daytime qualification courses, subdued-light qualification and shotgun qualification The firearms instructors are encouraging all officers to practice their accuracy before coming to the CCPOA firearms training day and qualifications. A good way to practice is to shoot at paper plates at 25 yards with a goal of keeping all rounds fired on the plate. #4) Ranges buildings for our 2009 training will be at the OLOFSON RANGE near Big Creek State Park (Polk City see enclosed map for general directions) #5) Participants will be organized into color-coded squads with wristbands and squad-leaders. This has worked well the last 4 years to keep everyone better informed and organized, so we plan to permanently incorporate this into our firearms training program. #6) ALL PARTICIPANTS ARE REQUIRED TO SIGN A C.C.P.O.A. Firearms Rules form upon arrival to the range. IF YOU HAVE HAD A CHANGE IN WEAPONRY SINCE 2008, PLEASE RECORD YOUR NEW WEAPON'S MAKE, MODEL & SERIAL NUMBER AND BRING IT WITH YOU FOR DOCUMENTATION. As in the past several years, we know that many of your law enforcement policies require an officer to wear his/her vest whenever they are armed your training records should also reflect that you train and practice with the same equipment. It is also a range safety issue that the time has come to implement. With over 100 officers shooting each year, 23,000+ rounds of ammunition are being discharged safety should be a primary concern for all participants thus the requirement of the Firearms Rules listing. You will note that ALL of the firearms instructors will be wearing their vests once again this year, and the CCPOA requests that everyone who owns a bullet-proof vest plan on wearing it for all the training! WEARING EYE and HEARING protection IS REQUIRED ON THE RANGE! Otherwise, please observe the following reminders from previous years - Each participant will be required to provide their own equipment and supplies: weapon, complete set of leather (nylon, etc.), ammunition (250 rounds required), speed loaders/spare magazines, heavyduty flashlight, hearing & eye protection, staplers & staples, buckets to police range brass, etc. If you want to shoot the shotgun qualification course Bring your duty shotgun, 11 rounds of rifled slugs & 5 rounds buckshot (00), If you have converted to a semi-auto weapon in the past 12 months, we need to have documentation on file with the CCPOA (in the form of a letter from the ILEA certified Firearms Instructor that provided the instruction). There will be an afternoon break provided, but NO LUNCH. Start time is at 12:30 PM this year so please plan your travel and arrival times to accommodate your luncheon needs. A special thanks to our dedicated CCPOA ILEA certified Firearms Instructors who set aside their time to plan and implement our firearm training efforts: Kevin Blazek (Adair CCB), John Pullis (Henry CCB), Mark Shoemaker (Pottawattamie CCB), Bob Funderman (Woodbury CCB), Dustin Schott (Fayette CCB), Dave Ong (Scott CCB), Nick Preston (Shelby CCB), Curtis Reighard (Keokuk CCB), Aaron Batchelder (Linn CCB), and Justin Smith (Lyon CCB).
