O2 FOR LIFE RAINFOREST FOUNDATION Customized field trips for students in grades 8-12 at the O2 nature reserve in Costa Rica Where students forge a deep connection to nature, to themselves, and to each other. CONSERVATION EDUCATION COMMUNITY

O2 For Life Nestled in 500 acres of tropical rainforest on the shores of the Gulfo Dulce in the Osa region of southern Costa Rica, the O2 nature reserve is teeming with a remarkable diversity of flora and fauna. The O2 reserve constitutes an important area of protected land which is part of a biological corridor connecting two national parks. At dawn, the air resonates with the roar of howler monkeys and the call of toucans. When darkness settles on the reserve, a cacophony of exotic frogs and insects fills the night. Experiential learning takes place in a variety of habitats within our reserve including secondary and primary rainforest, mangrove forests, and river estuaries. Our talented and enthusiastic biologist/naturalist guides will engage students in active, hands-on learning activities. Students will live off the grid and unplugged in a caring community where they will forge a deep connection to nature, to each other, and to themselves. They will leave the O2 reserve feeling more emboldened, more confident, and more curious about the natural world.

DARE TO surprise yourself Many things at the O2 nature reserve will be unfamiliar to you. Get ready to feel out of your element. It is always warm at the O2 reserve. It is often muggy and rainy. You will hike through muddy and at times strenuous terrain. Your muscles may ache from kayaking. You might jump when you hear strange sounds emanating from the forest. You may feel squeamish as scary looking bugs or strange critters scamper nearby. You might be uncomfortable eating unfamiliar foods, or you may feel shy when trying to communicate in Spanish. Then, something surprising will happen. You will find yourself becoming comfortable with being uncomfortable. You might discover you love falling asleep to the sound of frogs, geckos, and insects. You might surprise yourself by daring to eat termites as we explore jungle foods. You may discover you enjoy handling a snake! You will find yourself embracing new experiences and pushing yourself outside of your comfort zone. You will leave the O2 reserve a more confident and curious person. We value this trip because it gives teachers and students an opportunity to step outside of their everyday lives and become one with nature. From the food, the magical hikes and the incredible species that surround the property, each moment of the trip was simply amazing. - PARTICIPATING HIGH SCHOOL TEACHER

DARE TO immerse yourself The learning at the O2 reserve s outdoor classroom is filled with laughter, discovery, and surprises. You will be immersed in nature while learning about the ecology of the reserve s diverse habitats. Each day at O2 has planned field activities. One day might include a hike through mangrove and primary forests to reach a waterfall. You will slosh through mangroves, waistdeep in water with rubber boots squishing in the mud. Along the way, you might run into a troupe of endangered squirrel monkeys displaying their acrobatic skills. You might see toucans, trogons, or baby crocodiles. After hiking up the rocky stream bed, you will arrive at a rushing waterfall where you can wade in the pool below or swim behind the cascade to hear the roar of water overhead. Our guides are always on the lookout for opportunities to engage you in learning stopping frequently to identify the flora and fauna along the trail or to teach you about the unique features of each ecosystem. We then return to base camp for a nutritious hearty lunch followed by free time to relax and recharge. Afternoon activities may include kayaking and snorkeling around a small island. While kayaking, you could run into a pod of bottlenose dolphins, sea turtles, or even a majestic manta ray. Once at the island, our guides will lead you as you explore the wonders of the shallow, warm waters: diverse corals, colorful fish, and bright starfish. There is so much to be learned while being immersed in this marine coastal habitat. After a festive dinner, your group may gather around a beach campfire. Together we will reflect on the day, recall favorite moments, and roast a few s mores over the fire before retiring to the cabins for a well deserved sleep. You will leave the O2 reserve with a greater knowledge of tropical nature and a better understanding of the ways human activity affects it. Perhaps, most importantly, you will return home caring more deeply about the natural world and thinking about what you can do personally to act as a steward of our planet to preserve it for the future. ACTIVITIES INCLUDE: HIKING KAYAKING SNORKELING PLAYING SOCCER WITH LOCALS PHOTOGRAPHY CAMERA TRAP PROJECTS JEWELRY MAKING WITH RAINFOREST SEEDS O2 PLANT NURSERY NIGHT WALKS LEARNING ABOUT JUNGLE FOODS VISITING A LOCAL SCHOOL EVENING CAMP FIRES PRACTICING SPANISH...AND MORE

At the O2 reserve, you will be part of a community that is off the grid and unplugged. Freed from the noise and distractions of the wired world, you will be able to immerse yourself in nature and connect to yourself on a deeper level. Living in a caring, engaged community will naturally lead to a deepening of existing friendships as well as the creation of new ones. This trip is lifechanging because it gives kids a simple way of being, which allows them to make rich connections with one another. When the students come back, they re so deeply connected to one another. - PARTICIPATING HIGH SCHOOL TEACHER Through daily chores you will work together to help take care of our community. You will be responsible for keeping your sleeping quarters and bathrooms tidy. You will lend a hand in the kitchen by setting and clearing tables or washing dishes. Mealtimes are fun and filled with lively conversation with your peers, teachers, and the O2 staff. DARE TO connect Outside of planned activities, you will have time to relax alone or with others. There will be opportunities for sketching, journaling, playing cards or board games, resting in hammocks by the water, or making jewelry from recycled objects and native seeds. You could take part in raucous soccer games with the O2 staff and their Costa Rican friends. At night, you might unwind with your friends while dancing to Latin music. You will leave O2 with the understanding of how fulfilling it can be to live a simpler life in a mindful, caring community.

DARE TO do good At O2, we believe in the power of give and you shall receive. During your trip, you will have the opportunity to do community service at small, local schools near the reserve. You will become part of the local school community, engaging in classroom and recreational activities with the children. You might work together on facility improvement projects such as refinishing classroom furniture or painting murals. You will enjoy communal meals with the school community. These cross-cultural experiences are rewarding, heart-warming and memorable. Close bonds develop quickly. As one local school principal noted, Although the work done to help the school is deeply appreciated, what is valued even more is the genuine care and love brought to the children at our school. It is not uncommon for tears to be shed all around when it is time to say goodbye. You will contribute to local conservation efforts. You will collect seeds and saplings of threatened or endangered species to be raised in the O2 Nursery. You may then help to beautify school grounds and provide shade by transplanting these trees at surrounding schools. While staying at the reserve, you will help the planet by consuming less. Clothes get very dirty, very fast in the rainforest. You will wash your laundry by hand and hang it on clothes lines to dry. You will eat natural, local foods, recycle all non-perishable waste, and use energy sparingly. At the O2 reserve, we all strive to live cleaner and greener.

About Us Trip Logistics The O2 For Life Rainforest Foundation is a 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization, founded in 1998, to protect the tropical rainforest in the O2 nature reserve in Costa Rica. Our mission is to promote conservation education and the study of tropical nature while building community among young people. The foundation offers educational trips to the O2 nature reserve for small groups of students from American schools in grades 8-12. Trip duration and activities are customized to reflect the interests of each group. Stays at the reserve typically last 6-10 days and focus on field learning and community service with local Costa Rican schools. We also offer conservation education programs to our partner schools in local communities near the reserve. This involves O2 staff leading conservation activities at the schools as well as hosting local student groups at the O2 reserve for educational field trips. The foundation is run by a small board of three dedicated volunteers. Personnel in Costa Rica support the education program and maintain the reserve and its infrastructure. The foundation is financially supported by board donations, fundraising, and program revenue. Our philanthropic mission is to share our programs with students from all socio-economic backgrounds. Towards this end, the foundation helps to fund the cost of staying at the reserve for students who otherwise could not participate. We also fund our educational initiatives in the local communities near the reserve. This is our way of bolstering equal access to educational opportunities. TRIP PLANNING TRAVEL WITHIN COSTA RICA O2 For Life works closely with group leaders in the planning phases of a trip.
