Greetings to all members, For my last report as President I am starting on a very sad note. On behalf of the club I extend our deepest sympathies to Dennis Morgan on the passing of Bev. Our display at Anaconda West Gosford in support of Give Me 5 For Kids turned out to be a great day. We had 14 cars on display and members cooked a BBQ and collected money for such a worthy cause. At the end of the day the total raised was approximately $1,875 which was an excellent result. A big thank you to all members involved, especially Ken & Deb for organising the event. I would like to wish Joan Edwards a speedy recovery after her recent stay in hospital. My Trip (Dick Kearnan) to Melbourne for HD HR Holden Cruise 15 May 16 I was fortunate to commence 3 mths long service leave on the 1 May 16, the main reason is, to prepare my trusty HR Holden wagon for a trip around AUS, which my wife, Georgie and I will start on the 14 June, to celebrate the 50 th birthday of the HR Holden. I spotted on FB that the subject cruise was organized to take place in Melbourne, and thought what a perfect way to see if the wagon was up to setting off around AUS, so I packed up the HR and headed off on Friday the 13 May, heading for Albury, to stay the night. I left for Melbourne, next morning, to catch up and stay with an ex Army mate, for the weekend. Early start Sunday morning, to catch up with a couple of other HR s, to make our way to Officer, a town just east of Melbourne outskirts, the start point for the cruise down to the Trafalgar Holden museum. The convoy of HD, HR s and a couple other early Holden s, left around 11am and with over 100 cars in the convoy, took over an hour to get to Trafalgar, I was fortunate to get picked within the top 10 cars of the day, so on arrival at Trafalgar, got to park the old wagon in the museum grounds. The entry for the cruise included an entry ticket to the museum, which I should add, has some great old Holdens on display, spent over 3 hours at the museum, which included lunch, then headed back for Melbourne, to spend the night. FOR SALE FC Special sedan, unfinished project, no motor or gearbox, all other parts to complete, minor rust repairs still to be done, HR disc brake front end, EH steering column, shortened 10 bolt disc brake diff. $2,500 Ph Terry on 0400591666.
Club Calendar Sunday 10th July: Café Pennoz Parkup Tuggerah from 6am Sunday 31st July Cars and Coffee. Mt Penang Gardens 8.30 10.30 am Sat 23rd July. Christmas in July Give me 5 for Kids fundraiser Had a later start Monday morn, packed up the old wagon and headed off for Canowindra, to visit Charlie s Holden collection. The distance was a bit further than I had thought and with a bit of advice from Georgie on the phone and night fall approaching, ended up staying in the township of Young, Georgie had booked me some nice accommodation, just around the corner from the Services club, where I had an enjoyable evening meal. I worked out I last visited Young when I was around 14 years old, with a school mate whose uncle worked at the local Holden dealer, he was heading to Sydney to pick up a new car that had to be delivered back to Young, I was fairly surprised when he showed up at my mates place in Wollongong in a brand new yellow Torana XU1, from memory it was a fairly quick trip to Young in the Torana. I visited the Holden dealership in Young the following morning, striking up a conversation with the bloke at the parts counter, I asked how long had he been here, he replied looking at the calendar on his desk, this Friday it will be 43 years, so he knew my mates uncle, so it was interesting talking about the early days in Young, I should also add the town barber has an excellent Peter Brock collection of memorabilia on display.
Had another late start on the road, stopping for morning tea in Cowra, a visit to the information centre which has a great display and video of the Cowra breakout of Japanese POW s. I arrived in Canowindra just before lunch to find out Charlie would not be back in town till late afternoon, so rather than sit around, headed the trusty old wagon for Forbes for a visit to McFeeters Motor Museum, which I had previously read about that it was a good collection of mixed cars and motor bikes. Had a bite to eat at the Museum on arrival than spent close to 2 hours in the museum. Following the visit to the museum headed for Mullion Creek, just out of Orange, where I was staying the night with some friends. A early rise the next morning and a tour of the property with the owner to show me his collection of Holden wrecks on his property, which he has around a dozen, in different states of being stripped. After breakie headed back for Canowindra, where I was meeting Charlie around 10am, at the Holden Dealership. Arrived there just after 1015, had a talk with Charlie for around 40 mins then headed down to the workshop floor to take some pics of the Holdens he has left in his collection, which I have recently seen on FB is going under the hammer on the 1 & 2 OCT 16. On my look around on the workshop floor and under the office mezzanine found a room with a number of old Holden seats and buy chance one in excellent condition for the HR panel van I am having restored, after a little negotiation settled on a price and loaded the seat up in the wagon, for the trek back to Gosford, was going to stay in Bathurst for night but spent my accommodation money on a seat. The wagon did not miss a beat for the 1500 miles we travelled together, except for a little oil leak from the front of the sump gasket, which I have since replaced, I feel she is more than ready for a trip around OZ. Catch you at All Holden Day, maybe. Dick & Georgie
