Friendship Force of Big Canoe/North Georgia explore understand serve October 2011 <www.friendshipforcebigcanoenorthgeorgia.org> Oct. 16 - Regular meeting, 4:30 pm, Forno Italian Restaurant, Foothills Shopping Center Nov. 4-6 Shelby, NC, outgoing exchange Nov. 20 - Regular meeting, 4:30 pm, Forno Italian Restaurant, Foothills Shopping Center. Includes annual meeting and election of officers for 2012 President s message Our next monthly meeting on Sunday, October 16 at 4:30 at Forno Restaurant will begin with an Irish emphasis via Reinhardt University s Michael Martinez and will conclude with a very important business meeting. We will be presenting Charlene Terrell with the Wayne Smith Medal in honor of her outstanding work with Friendship Force over the past 30 plus years. Then we will vote on the three places our club would like to go to meet people and learn about their area. These three area names will be submitted to FFI, where the staff will pair us with one club for our 2013 outgoing exchange. Read more about these possible destinations in this newsletter. We need your interest and input! Please note that the dates for our New Zealand exchange have changed from April to March. We have learned that for two weeks in April school children there will have a school holiday. Because many members of FF will be hosting grandchildren during that time, March turns out to be the month they would like to host. Please plan to attend this very special meeting when we learn about community opportunities at Reinhardt, commend and applaud Charlene, and make plans for our future. In friendship, Ches Tredway FFI s web site: <www.thefriendshipforce.org> In Honor of Wayne Smith FFI has established the Wayne Smith Medal honoring exceptional service and leadership in advancing the mission of Friendship Force International. If you go to the FFI website, you can find information about medal recipients and about the award. [See middle column on this page for the address.] To quote Wayne Smith, founder of Friendship Force: If ordinary people get to know each other as friends, they discover that the values and experiences they share are more important than their differences.

GOING GREEN IN OCTOBER! You may think of March as the time to think Irish, but Reinhardt University is having a Year of Ireland and Irish Heritage during this academic year. For our October meeting we are delighted to have Michael Martinez, the Library Director at Reinhardt, coming to introduce us to Reinhardt s Year of... program. We, as members of the larger community around Reinhardt, can participate in many of these activities. Here is a chance to hear about speakers, story tellers, films, and more, all of which have a connection with Ireland and its people. Those of us with Irish forebears may even hear some familiar family names. Mr. Martinez has been a librarian at Reinhardt since 2004 and became director in 2005. Previously, he spent over 10 years in library positions at University of California--Irvine. If you haven t been to the Reinhardt campus, you have a treat in store. It is about 15 miles west of Highway 515 on 108. Friendship Force International, of which we are a part, urges us to learn about and, where possible, participate in international activities in our own area. Here s an opportunity nearly on our doorstep! We will meet at Forno Italian Restaurant, 218 Foothills Pkwy, Marble Hill, in the IGA Shopping Center. The meeting begins at 4:30 with the program, followed by the business meeting. Dinner is optional following the meeting. Welcome to New Members We welcome Cecil and Linda Schneider and Earl and Anne Marie Small, who have recently joined our club. Below we introduce Cecil and Linda. We plan to feature Earl and Anne Marie in an upcoming newsletter. The Schneiders Linda and Cecil moved to Georgia from Kansas in early 1964 after Cecil accepted an engineering job with Lockheed in Marietta. Cecil was graduated from Wichita University in Aeronautical Engineering, and Linda was graduated from Saint Francis School of Nursing. Cecil worked for Lockheed (later Lockheed Martin) in Marietta for over 37 years, with a couple of years spent in Burbank, CA, in the late 80s, before retiring in 2001. Linda served as manager of Schneider enterprises, running the household, educating their two boys, and as chief financial manager, among many other duties. Their older son and his wife live in Marietta, and their younger son lives at home. They bought a lot in Big Canoe in 1982 and just never got around to building on it until 2007. They moved to Big Canoe in 2006 from East Cobb County and moved into their new house in late 2007. They enjoy the beauty, the people, and the absence of traffic in the mountains. Cecil and Linda Schneider FF Membership Friendship Force membership has many aspects, and individuals may especially enjoy one, some, or all of the club activities. These activities include programs involving people and places here and abroad, hosting international or U.S. visitors overnight, hosting for a meal or outing, traveling to other countries or U.S. states, usually to stay in homes, but not always. One doesn t have to travel great distances to make world friends!

EXCHANGE OPPORTUNITIES OUTGOING: Shelby, NC -- Nov. 3-6, 2011. A domestic exchange--we estimate it will be a 3 1/2 hour drive. Exchange Director is Nancy Davis, 770-893-4624. New Zealand -- MARCH 2012. (Date change) Huw Williams is Exchange Director, 678-253-2456. March 8-15 with Otago Club in Dunedin area on the south island, believed to be southern-most FFI club in world; March 15-22with Wairarapa Club in Masterton area; and March 22-29 with Waikato Club in Hamilton area. Both the Wairarapa and Waikato clubs are on the north island. INCOMING: Winnipeg, Manitoba-- February 22-29, 2012. Jim and Helen Wiltse, 706-268-2133, are Exchange Directors. Planning is starting; please notify the exchange directors or any of the committee names below if you can assist. Dinner/day hosts - Margie Bowyer Activities - Robert & Margaret Logan, Bob & Peggy Anderson Welcome book - Nancy Davis Hosts - Marie Williams Accounting - Treasurer Transportation - Harry & Jobeth Yarbrough OUTGOING FOR 2013 : On this and the next page are summaries of areas brought to our attention at the September meeting. During our October meeting we will vote on which three, prioritized, we will submit to FFI for our 2013 exchange. The FFI staff then matches up requests with clubs incoming plans and offers clubs on both ends of an exchange the chance to accept a match. Exchanges Nominated Noumea, New Caledonia-- club can host 12 ambassadors and is located in Micronesia east of Queensland, Australia, and west of Vanuatu, a Survivor television locale. It is a popular cruise port with beautiful but endangered reefs offshore. Ex- change could be combined with one to Indonesia, Australia, or Hawaii. April to Nov., the dry season, is the best time to go. The history is fascinating to read. For more information consult wikipedia. Quebec (report on Sherbrooke)-- three clubs in Quebec. Sherbrooke, one of the clubs, is 1 1/2 hrs. from Montreal. Good Sherbrooke website is bilingual and shows an active club. Could travel by air to Montreal or could drive. A French language experience without going across the Atlantic. Romania--two clubs 80 miles apart. Sibiu club has 31 members. Sibiu, population 170,000, is one of most beautiful cities in region, preserved historical sites, museums and exhibitions. Was 2007 European Capital of Culture. Has been inhabited since 300 BC. Countryside is the heart and soul of Romania. Well worth a visit. Russia--ten clubs are listed on the FFI website. Moscow and St. Petersburg are the two most familiar names to us. For plentiful information on clubs, go to FFI s website (see page one of this newsletter).

Nominated Exchanges, continued Scotland--West of Scotland club is 15 miles from Glasgow. Members live in East Kilbride, 75,000 population, or Strathaven, 8,000 popu-lation, granted a Royal Charter in 1450. Area includes scenic Clyde coast, forests, lochs, and mountains, including Loch Lomond. Has highest mountains in the UK, long and interesting history. Turkey--a Eurasian country bordered by eight countries and the Mediterranean, Aegean, and Black Seas. The three largest cities are Istanbul, Ankara, and Izmir. Turkey has six FF clubs, with two of them being in Izmir and Ankara. The country has miles of coastland, a mostly arid climate, contains high speed rail and unpaved roads, mountains, and recorded history going back thousands of years. Imagine getting to spend a week in the home of natives who know the land and love their country! with another exchange, an invitation was extended for a Fall 2012 exchange. Huw Williams, ED for the outgoing exchange to New Zealand in April 2012, reported no news from the South Island club, but plans are proceeding from the other two North Island clubs. The exchange goal is 20 people participating in the exchange. Ches reported on the outgoing exchange to Shelby, NC, Nov. 4-6, 2011. Nancy Davis will be the ED for the tentative numbers of 14 going. Ches announced the Board voted to award the Wayne Smith medal to Charlene Terrell. The award will include a $500 gift to the Friendship Force Legacy Fund. Jobeth Yarbrough introduced our program of five members speaking about six areas for a possible exchange: Huw Williams on Romania and Scotland; Harry Yarbrough on Turkey; June Tredway on Quebec; Mary Ellen Johnson on the South Pacific: New Caledonia; and Helen Wiltse on Russia. The meeting adjourned, followed by dinner.
