WJVintage April 2017 Newsletter Welcome to the April edition of the WJVintage newsletter. This month s fabulous header photograph was taken by an old friend from my days working at Corgi. Craig Scott is an aviation enthusiast with a growing interest in railways and he s a decent photographer too! Craig snapped Flying Scotsman in full steam a week or two ago on the Keighley and Worth Valley Railway and what a lovely action shot it is too. I have been really busy over the past month and have enjoyed some great shows and meetings from Kent in the south to Cheshire and Lancashire in the north. Take a look at the Out and About feature below for reports on some of these events. The What s New section is definitely worth a look this month. Not only do I have news of the latest variants of the superb new GWR 0-4-2 tank locomotives, but I am also pleased to announce the imminent arrival of Volume 3 of Michael Foster s British Toy Trains series of books. Finally, I am about to acquire a large O gauge collection from the family of a customer who sadly died recently. Everything is unrun and as new so do have a look at the list. There are some lovely items available. I hope you are all having a good Easter! 1

Out and About Bassett-Lowke Northern Leigh 25 th March 2017 This is a fantastic show, spoiled only by the fact that no-one attends anymore! What is the future for this friendly show? I m afraid I don t really have an answer to that but I do think something needs to change to give this event new impetus. I also have to confess that I took photos at Leigh, but I can t now find them. They are no longer on my camera but I can t see them in any of my event photo files! The shot above is from last year. Sadly, this show is dying on its feet. It used to be one of the highlights of my year (two actually spring and autumn). The past few shows however, have just become quieter and quieter. This show had about 60 people through the door during the entire day. That is half what used to be considered a fair turnout. It s also way below the number that turn out for the monthly evening HRCA meets at Preston Brook, which is just down the road. And, compared to an event like Beckenham Vintage? Well just read my report below. So, what is the problem? All the ingredients are there, with an excellent layout dedicated to Bassett-Lowke and another for people to run whatever they fancy. There are always some fantastic trains on show and running. The traders are, for the most part, still in attendance, the atmosphere is great, friendly and welcoming, plus the catering is good and inexpensive. I did quite well at this particular show but to be fair, that was mostly just one customer. Some seem to believe that being the Bassett-Lowke show puts people off as it suggests just one brand. I really don t know. It never used to stop people coming. I guess rebranding as a more general vintage train event might be worth a try. Let s wait and see. I really hate to talk ill of shows where I know so many people work so hard to make them a success, and this event really deserves to do well. My fingers are crossed! 2

Beckenham Vintage Beckenham, 1 st April 2017 So in complete contrast to Leigh, this show goes from strength to strength. This year the building works to the church halls were completed and the show was therefore spread over three main areas, including the church itself. The layouts were fantastic, the attendance was excellent, and trading was brisk. What more can I say? With all the building works to the hall now completed this year s Beckenham Vintage was far more comfortable with everything more spread out. There were no fewer than 12 fabulous and very different layouts spread mainly around the church itself. The trading area was in the hall adjacent to the church and included David Embling s splendid O gauge Hornby tinplate layout. David Embling s lovely HRCA O gauge tinplate layout has some young admirers nice to see! The newly refurbished hall was then dedicated to the catering and the Beckenham and West Wickham Model Railway Club stand, plus some very comfy seating for a welcome rest. Mark Carne and his Southern O Gauge team put on a superb 3-rail vintage O gauge layout and there was also a fascinating Eastern European 3

O gauge layout by Bryan Pentland which included trains from Russia, Hungary and the Czech Republic. 3-Rail Vintage 0-gauge by Mark Carne and the Southern 0-Gauge Group Eastern European O-Gauge by Bryan Pentland Other layouts included Hornby Dublo 2-rail, Hornby Dublo 3-rail, Hornby Acho, Triang OO, Triang HO, Triang TT, Trix and last but not least, a wonderful working Lego layout. So, something for everyone including the youngsters, and I am pleased to say there were quite a few youngsters in attendance! Throughout the day there were around 400 visitors and as this show is open until 5pm, it was noticeable that people were still arriving well into the afternoon (when at most other shows the traders are packing away by about 2:30). All in all, a cracking day out and I am already looking forward to next year. 4

Customer Corner It is springtime and already this year we have had one or two days of beautiful sunshine. What better time to clean up the outdoor railway and get some trains running? That is exactly what Brian Alderman from Essex has done. He runs a 2-rail coarse scale outdoor layout in his garden and has a superb feature with a 60ft long viaduct on cast concrete supports. Brian bought a WJV Railcar back in 2015 and here it is enjoying a sunny airing as it passes over the viaduct. What a fantastic setting. Many thanks to Brian for sharing this with us. 5

Mick Martin s garden layout has featured in these pages before. However, Mick reports he has completely refurbished his layout over the winter. All the track was lifted and the old boards have been replaced with nice new marine ply. He has clearly done an excellent job but Mick s only comment was; boy, am I glad it is finished! Hard work always pays off in the end and hopefully this layout will now be good for many more years of trouble-free running. What s New? Update on the GWR 0-4-2T 48xx/14xx plus Autocoach Deliveries expected from April 2017 Models shown above are pre-production prototypes and subject to amendment/improvement At time of going to press we are still on schedule for a late April release of the first of the 14xx Class sets WJV01071, a set comprising 1420 in GWR lettered plain Green livery plus Great Western lettered 40cm autocoach in Chocolate and Cream. Last month I reported that I had sold out of these sets. However, I somehow miscalculated this slightly. I do in fact have 2 sets still available at 560.00 each plus P&P, so if you would like to secure one of these, please get in touch as quickly as possible. I can also still supply a few of the separately boxed single models - so loco 1420 boxed as one item (WJV01062) and Great Western choc/cream autocoach boxed as another single item (WJV01067). These will be available at 375.00 each plus P&P for the locomotive and 195.00 each plus P&P for the autocoach. 6

If you order one of each at the same time I will honour the set price of 560.00 plus P&P for the two, so a saving of 10.00 There are of course plenty more exciting releases coming up of the GWR 0-4-2T 48xx/14xx and I now have stock of the following as locomotives only (autocoach sets to follow). Product Number WJV01071 GWR plain green 1420 plus Great Western Choc/Cream autocoach 560.00 per set plus P&P Product Number WJV01062 GWR plain green 1420 Loco 375.00 plus P&P IN STOCK 375.00 Plus P&P Product Number WJV01067 Great Western Choc/Cream autocoach 195.00 each plus P&P IN STOCK 375.00 Plus P&P Product Number WJV01072 BR green lined (late crest) 1450 plus BR Maroon autocoach 560.00 per set plus P&P Product Number WJV01063 BR green lined (late crest) 1470 Loco 375.00 plus P&P Product Number WJV01070 BR maroon autocoach 195.00 each plus P&P Product Number WJV01073 BR black lined (early crest) 1470 plus BR Carmine/Cream autocoach 560.00 per set plus P&P Product Number WJV01064 BR black lined (early crest) 1470 Loco 375.00 plus P&P IN STOCK 375.00 Plus P&P Product Number WJV01069 BR Carmine/Cream autocoach 195.00 each plus P&P 7

More details to follow shortly. Numbers on each are going to be quite limited so order early to avoid disappointment. All my contact details are at the end of the newsletter British Toy Trains Book 3 8

Book 3 in Michael Foster s series covering all those other (not Hornby or Bassett-Lowke) toy train manufacturers is due out at the end of April. This one covers the history and products manufactured by Brimtoy that s British Metal and Toy Manufacturers Ltd, Brimtoy Ltd and Wells- Brimtoy Ltd - to the end of World War 2. The book s introduction includes a useful update on books 1 and 2. Despite decades of research, Michael Foster acknowledges that there are still mysteries surrounding some of the wonderful toy train releases already covered. However, since publishing the first two books some further information has come to light which helps fill some of the gaps and this is now included. The book then goes on to cover the main event, namely the history of the Brimtoy brand between 1914 and 1945, followed by an in-depth review of the fascinating Brimtoy ranges of toy trains and accessories. Produced as a softback edition, this is a considerably longer volume than its predecessors with no fewer than 210 pages. It is fully illustrated throughout with reproductions of original advertising, catalogue and packaging material as well as superb full-colour photography by Michael Bowes to bring the reader a unique and detailed history of a famous British toy brand that might otherwise have been slowly forgotten. Volume 4 is already underway and will continue the story of Brimtoy into the postwar era and up to the end of the business in 1990. It will also cover Mettoy and various other small companies that produced tinplate toy trains. No date for publication has been set yet. As a slight aside, during the research for Book 3, Michael found some photos of old Wells-Brimtoy delivery trucks. He was so enthused by these that he approached a professional model maker and commissioned a special one-off model of one of the trucks. Based on a Corgi 1:50 scale Bedford Pantechnicon model, it has modelled up superbly with excellent period advertising for Wells-Brimtoy. It would be nice to see Corgi release this as a model we could all buy! Due to be available at Rugby Vintage on April 29 th, British Toy Trains, Volume 3 is priced at 24.00 each plus P&P. I am happy to take orders now for despatch as soon as they are delivered from the printers. 9

As New O Gauge Train Collection Sadly, a very good customer died a few months ago and his family have approached me to offer me his collection. Despite amassing a considerable number of O Gauge locomotives, rolling stock and other accessories, he never managed to complete his layout and so none of the items have ever been run. They are effectively as new. I haven t yet picked up the collection, but hope to do so in the next couple of weeks. However, before it goes public at shows and on my website, I thought I would give newsletter subscribers exclusive the first option on these items. Below is a full list of what is available. At this moment obviously, I don t have photographs but I have viewed everything in person so I can vouch for it all being top quality. If any of these items is of interest please let me know and I will reserve it/them for you and can send photos for approval, if required, when I take delivery. Obviously, these items are offered on a first come, first served basis. There are some lovely pieces, including some of my own exclusive issues that are long ago sold-out. This will include one of the largest 0-gauge railways constructed featuring Bassett-Lowke products, vintage live steam 0-gauge and vintage gauge 1 railway, plus much more. I attended the 20 th anniversary event 5 years ago and it was something else! Just look at that Bassett-Lowke 0-gauge layout in the photo below! Sadly, with an ageing membership events like this may not go on forever, so I really would recommend you try and get along to this one for at least one day. It promises to be a totally unique experience and, of course 11
