Candon Guan Ms. Field AoHT Green Hotels Developing In times like this when the planet is suffering from what we have done, there are many ways to try and help the planet recover and one of those many ways is to go green. Some people are not aware what going green is and it is basically doing your best to help the planet. Recycling is one huge way to be green but going green is not only limited to recycling, there are many other ways to be green too. By going green you are not doing something extra it can also be beneficial to you by not inhaling all the toxins from the oil and by consuming organic foods you are living a healthier lifestyle. Many businesses realize that the planet is slowly dieing and they are going green to try and save the planet. One business that are going green are hotels. There are many hotels that are going green and the people staying at the green hotels also try and help out the best they can by staying in the hotel and doing the green and helping the hotel save on energy. Hotels go green by changing their equipment and by changing their way of operating. By going green there are good things to it and there is also bad things. What is good about going green is that places are being healthier, helping save the planet and being part of a healthier earth. The bad side to being green is it can be extremely

expensive and hotels realize that. Organic food usually cost a lot more than regular food and organic products cost way more than a regular product. By going green and purchasing the products cost way more than a regular product. It may cost a few hundred more to have and that is per room. Although a hotel can never carbon footprint they can always reduce the size of their footprint. Some people ask well what is a green hotel? and the answer to that is a green hotel is a regular hotel that is environmentally friend and they also do their their best to reduce whatever waste, energy, and water they can. Most green hotels recycle, do not wash as much material and ask the guests staying at their hotel to help the hotel preserve the planet. Some hotels even install solar panels on their hotels to save more energy by using natural energy. In fact hotels not only save on energy, water and waste some hotels use specific wood grown for furniture or they do not even use wood at all they use materials that looks like wood. They even serve healthier food for the guests staying like organic food. Some hotels have a key slot near the door where you put your key card. When you put your key card in it it allows you to turn on the electricity on in the room without the key card you can not turn anything on. By doing this guests will not leave anything on when they leave their room, thus saving energy. Hotels can use a low flow shower head to reduce water but at the same time have it high air pressure so you will not notice the low flow. Hotels also like to have guests reuse towels whenever possible, guests can leave it on the rack meaning they want to reuse it or

they can leave it on the floor meaning they wish for a new one. Reusing towels help the environment because when they reuse towels they save a lot of water they use to wash the towels. They also save a lot of energy by having one less towel to dry. Aside from showering and reusing towels hotels also can use flow low toilets to conserve water even more and by doing all these steps they are saving water. A few hotels give a recycling and a composting bin along with the regular trash can. Doing this reduces waste because most of the waste in the trash can can be either recycled or composted but since there is only one can where else can they put the recyclables besides the trash can. Some things that green hotels are doing different from regular hotels is green hotels use equipment that cost much more but in the long run they are actually saving money because of the energy and water they save. Although, saving money is good for the hotel that is not that main focus. When a hotel helps save the environment it is very rewarding for the hotel and for the workers and staff. Some green hotels use an automatic heater or air conditioning that automatically turns on when it detects that someone is in the room and when the room temperature is either too high or too low. They try their best to reuse whenever they can and whatever they can. Hotels even use soy based ink instead of the regular petroleum ink to make it easier to recycle paper and it is more environmentally friendly. Soy based ink is a lot easier to get rid of than regular ink which makes recycling a lot easier to do. (Schmidt, 2008)

Some hotels have a restaurant to feed the guests that stay there, green hotels have green have restaurants. The green restaurant offers healthy organic food for its guests. The food that the restaurant offers does not contain any chemicals you might find at local fast food restaurants to help preserve the food. The food also does not contain any harmful products that can be bad for the human body. By selling fresh products to the customers it brings out the foods taste and will essentially taste better. By using whole foods, the food that is not eaten is easier to compost and will take less energy. Some more solutions for a hotel to be green is to train the staff know to turn off heating or air conditioning when rooms are empty and is left on for later. The staff should always try to use recycled products whenever possible like napkins, and disposable cups. Use cleaners and fumes that are non toxic. For hotels with a pool have a heating system that runs on solar energy instead of regular energy. The hotel manager should utilize the sunlight as much as they can and try to get skylights. Donate what is leftover to a nonprofit organization or compost the leftover food. Always try to buy organic, locally-grown food and/ or plant an organic garden to provide fresh produce for your guests. Donate leftover furniture and appliances to charities that can use them. If the hotel has a gift shop try to purchase fair trade products. Offer discounted rates to sustainable living/environmental organizations who would like stay at and/or hold meetings at your hotel. ("Sustainable solutions for," )

Hotels have always been some of the biggest energy consumers and contributing to some of the problems on Earth. (Romano, 2011) Although hotels need to provide each guest with the availability of hot water cold water, heat or air conditioning whenever they want. Electricity to be available when a guest needs it. It does not mean that they can not be green. Most guests know they can abuse the hotels resources, but they do not do it. America have about 47,000 hotels and they spend an average of almost $2,200 per room each year based on solely energy, making up around six percent of their operating costs. (Romano, 2011) Hotels realize that reducing this energy usage is good business. It can help they save a lot of money and the planet. Normally, guests do not know they are staying in a green hotel unless they ask or if know have any knowledge in green equipments. A guest can find out of a hotel saves energy if the hotel uses florescent light bulbs instead of the regular light bulbs. They can also find out if a hotel saves energy if they use skylights whenever possible. A guest can figure out if the hotel saves water if the water equipment is low flow and if the hotel offer a reuse towel thing. Hotels become green for many reasons, some of the common reasons hotels become green to help the environment, another reasons hotels become green is to become Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certified. when a hotel is LEED certified the hotel becomes better known and obviously, attract more guests. According to Wes Tyler of the Chancellor Hotel, the green hotel trend is very common

in the west part of the United States especially in California. But as you get more East, Green Hotels become more and more rare and harder to find. A worker in the Orchard Garden Hotel said when a hotel becomes very green they can receive an award from the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design company. The hotel can be LEED certified. The LEED company gives a hotel points and based on the points they get they get an award. A hotel can be LEED certified being the lowest, the Silver LEED Award, the Gold LEED Award and finally the highest award the Platinum LEED Award. Many people like traveling or going on vacation, and many of these travelers will end up staying in hotels, motels, or inns. Usually hotels are wasteful and end up spending a lot of natural resources that do not have to be wasted. However the people are more aware that the planet is slowly dieing and are aware that hotels and restaurants are going green so they usually try to help out and stay in a green hotel. If people do some research before deciding where make reservations for the night they can see that there are many green hotels out there and if they want to go to a green hotel and not a regular hotel then the hotel that are green gets a customer and that customer can outreach and tell others about that hotel. According to Wes Tyler of the Chancellor Hotel, customers that have a better time staying at a green hotel will come back again. The guest that stayed in the hotel can suggest that hotel to friends or family or write a good review about the hotel. Guests like to stay in a

hotel with good reviews not a hotel that is low quality. By attracting more guests the hotel makes more money annually. Also, many travelers and tourists they are already supporting green hotels are also helping save the planet. According to an online source around 90 percent of U.S. travelers said they would rather stay in a green hotel rather then a regular hotel. (Romano, 2011) Today in the 21st century there are many businesses that are green. Wes Tyler of the Chancellor Hotel says in California every business is somewhat green. Every business is green a little bit or is very green. A hotel can be green in the simplest manners like recycling, saving energy and water. Or can be very green by having green equipment and technology. In California it is hard to find a hotel that does not do anything green. Cities like Las Vegas in fact have many green buildings and hotels. Las Vegas is pretty well known for all the casinos and night clubs and many other buildings that use many flashy light to attract customers to their building. Man of those lights are powered from The Las Vegas Sands Corporation. The Las Vegas Sands Corporation has helped to make Las Vegas a front-runner in the green hotel trend. The Las Vegas Sands Corporation helps make Las Vegas one of the largest sustainable corporations in the world. (Romano, 2011)

According to Wes Tyler, the green business have been around for some time but was unnoticed. It was not until 2006, Al Gore s documentary An Inconvenient Truth which talked about global warming and climate change. It was until then the hotel business realized that this is an important issue to people. By caring about the issue they realized it can attract more people to their property. During this time people became very environmentally sensitive, and by staying in a green hotel they felt like they were not contributing to global warming. After the movie released there were many talk about global warming and polar bears and penguins being endangered and the sea levels rising people became aware. The movie was he biggest catalyst and attracted lots of media. Global warming has been an issue for twenty to thirty year but has been unnoticed. Al Gore s movie really brought peoples attention to this matter which started the green hotel business. In fact, not only hotels started going green many other businesses went green also so the customers will not feel bad for contributing to global warming. Places like airlines and even government buildings went green too and some government buildings got to be LEED certified. The green trend was a huge trend after the movie but ever since the economic situation and the recession kicked in going green got put in the back of every ones mind and it is not as important as it was in 2009. Green trends faded down and eventually people did not care if a building is green or not they cared more about product quality in the building and location was more important than green buildings. The green trends pecked near 2009 but died down when recession started. However, now the green trend is slowly coming back and people are starting to

become environmentally aware again. Green products can be worth it however some green practices are extremely expensive and you do not get good return. Businesses can also do some small changes that do not cost a lot of and can get cost rebates by recycling and reducing waste, it can save a lot of money. The expensive products in a recycling water pumps for laundry machines and reuse the water after each wash. Those can be expensive because it will require some new construction. But in the long run it can make back what is lost to buy expensive equipment for the building. Everyone in California does some green things, there are not green and not green hotels in the state only green and more green hotels. It is more like a degree of becoming green. What we do in The Chancellor Hotel is to donate our old grease to the city and they convert the old grease and turn it to bio fuel. Instead of paying someone to take the old grease away we look for different offers before taking actions. Becoming green never ends, some hotels open up as a green hotel instead of converting from a traditional hotel to a green hotel. Becoming green is a journey not a destination and the road to becoming green never ends. Indeed, the road to becoming green never ends technology is always advancing and there will always be more ways to be more and more green. The green trend was at its peak during one point and due to economic reasons it has dies down. However, the trend is not completely dead it is slowly recovering and will be recovered when

the United States is out of this recession. although not everyone is aware of this issue at this time in the future they will become aware. The green trend is a never ending trend and will always be advancing and it is a step closer to a healthy planet.
