He has been offering fascinating innercity walking tours since 2011. Together with a group of experienced guides, JoburgPlaces has already taken nearly 13500 people on walking tours. In 2017 JoburgPlaces is introducing a new range of public and private tours. Public tours are scheduled per occasion (see schedule below). Private tours are available on request. Two daily public tours available every day from Wednesday to Saturday every week (no public tours on Sundays, Mondays or Tuesdays) Daily tours guided by Lunga Zondi or other guides working with JoburgPlaces. A place on a tour is only confirmed upon receipt of proof of payment. For international clients who do not have a local bank account and cannot make a local transfer, we will send a Paypal request. You can then follow the links and pay by foreign credit card. JoburgPlaces operates from Hangout Jozi at One Eloff, Joziburg (see www.hangoutjozi.co.za). Most tours start and end here. However some tours have different starting points. Confirm when you book Customers are most welcome to arrive at Hangout Jozi earlier for coffee, drinks and eats or to stay afterwards for a leisurely meal and good times.
MARSHALLTOWN TOUR This is the signature tour in the JoburgPlaces collection and it is the best introduction to the Johannesburg inner-city. We have been doing this tour for over 6 years and we literally know every nook and cranny of this part of town. The tour tells the story of Joburg s gold-rush inception, boom days, eventual decline and current regeneration. Starting from Hangout Jozi at One Eloff, the tour takes in Gandhi Square and the pedestrianised Main Street in the corporate mining district, including historic landmarks such as the Impala Stampede Sculpture and the Shadow Boxer Sculpture in front of Chancellor House where Mandela & Tambo once had their law offices. It is a historically intense and thorough tour, interspersed with public art and cool sidewalk cafes. JoburgPlaces/Urban Backpackers COLLABORATIVE CITY CENTRE WALKING TOUR An exciting NEW addition to our tour schedule is a collaborative undertaking between JoburgPlaces, operating from Hangout Jozi and the nearby Urban Backpackers, operated by Urban Zulu. This tour gives guests of Urban Backpackers and Hangout Jozi the ideal opportunity to get familiar with the immediate environment, including famous artist studios and galleries, viewing points, landmark retail precincts and historic sites. Urban Backpackers is a cool, inner-city backpacker s lodge with a great rooftop, operated by Papy Kaluw, famous for his Urban Zulu fashion brand. Hangout Jozi is of course the famous tapas bar and restaurant operated by JoburgPlaces at One Eloff in the Joziburg precinct. This tour uncovers the exciting secrets of the centre of Johannesburg s inner-city and is a MUST DO experience for any Joburg visitor. REGENERATED-INNER-CITY TOUR This is simply an extended route of the Marshalltown tour, that includes the Retail District of the city as well as the Historic Core an a quick visit to Braamfontein. The same story of gold-rush inception, boom days, eventual decline and current regeneration is told, but with a bit more detail added in and the opportunity to see a wider area of the inner-city. FASHION DISTRICT/LITTLE ADDIS TOURS Probably the most fascinating tour in the inner-city, this tour takes in the historic garment district, today repositioned as the Fashion District. Visit the Fashion Kapitol and Fashion District Wholesalers, known for its ShweShwe fabrics. Also do some bargain shopping in the area, before walking on the Ethiopian Quarter of the city. Explore buildings full of mazes of shops, sample the best Ethiopian coffee and enjoy a lovely Ethiopian meal too. CONSTITUTION HILL TOURS Constitution Hill is home to the highest court in South Africa, the Constitutional Court an amazing architectural gem. Also on the hill is No 4 Prison, the Old Fort and the Women s Jail. If you want to understand the story of South Africa, especially the injustices of the Apartheid past and how the country overcame that legacy to the point of an exemplary constitution, then this tour is for you. Part of the tour focuses on the times Mahatma Gandhi and later Nelson Mandela were imprisoned here. The prison museums are astonishing and the court is a marvellous art gallery too. DIRECTIONS TO THE START: MOST TOURS START AT HANGOUT JOZI AT ONE ELOFF, JOZIBURG: Hangout Jozi is located BEHIND the massive blue-and-yellow One Eloff building on the corner of Eloff & Wemmer Jubilee Streets in the Johannesburg CBD. We are located along the Joziburg Lane at the back of the building. One Eloff is easily reachable from the M2 highway from either way by taking the Rissik Street off-ramp into town. Once in Rissik Street, turn right into Albert and right into Eloff. To get to the parking drive down Eloff and turn left at the traffic light into Wemmer Jubilee Street. Now turn left at the gate at the end of the yellow-and-blue building. Drive up the lane and the ramp to the rooftop parking.
