History of Faro Blanco Resort and Yacht Club The lighthouse was built in the 1950 s to inform marine vessels on the bayside of the shallow waters ahead. In 1967, Hurricane Donna severely damaged the property and lighthouse and residents were forced to completely renovate this area and renamed it Faro Blanco which is Spanish for "White Lighthouse". Tragedy struck again in 2005 when Hurricane Wilma took out this beloved plot of land many Marathon residents called home and severely damaged the lighthouse once again. 28

FISHING IN THE KEYS The International Game Fish Association states that more saltwater world records have been established in the Florida Keys than any other angling destination on the globe. Types of Fishing in the Florida Keys Flats/Back Country What kind of fish do you catch? The list is endless but most common species are: Spotted Seatrout, Redfish, Snook, Mangrove Snappers, Catfish, Jacks, Ladyfish, SHARKS, Tarpon, Sheepshead, Black Drum, Goliath Grouper, Spanish Mackerel, Bluefish and a few others are always a possibility. Deep Sea/Offshore The Keys are bordered by the Gulf of Mexico on one side and the Straits of Florida on the other. Species caught here: Blue and White Marlin, Sailfish, Dolphin Mahi-Mahi, Wahoo, Tuna, Barracuda, Cobia, Grouper, Snapper, Jacks and Sharks. Wreck Today, shipwrecks are thankfully rare but the old wrecks nevertheless make great fishing spots. The best catches are: Permit, Amberjacks, Jacks, Grouper, Snapper, Cobia, Sharks, and Barracuda. DIVING THE KEYS The 120-mile Florida Keys island chain is home to the continental United States' only living-coral barrier reef. Our coral formations are famous for their abundance of fish, from impressive schools of blue -striped grunts to toothy green moray eels. The U.S. government established the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary to protect our marine habitat. Preserving the reef is a top priority for a good reason. We have coral-encrusted ship wrecks and intricate natural coral formations. We have shallow reefs for snorkelers, and a range of deeper reefs for experienced divers. Most sites are a short boat ride from our islands, where dozens of highly professional dive operators are ready to cater to you. Once you visit the Keys, you'll see why some of the some of the most renowned dive photographers and writers in the world make this their home base. 35
ATTRACTIONS The Turtle Hospital The Turtle Hospital opened its doors 1986 with four main goals: 1) rehab injured sea turtles, 2) educate the public through outreach programs and visit local schools, 3) conduct and assist with research aiding to sea turtles (in conjunction with state universities) and work toward environmental legislation making the beaches and water safe and clean for sea turtles, and 4) return them to their natural habitat Rehabilitation A variety of turtle ailments are treated at the Turtle Hospital including flipper amputations caused by fishing line and trap rope entanglements, shell damage caused by boat collisions, and intestinal impactions caused by ingestion of foreign materials such as plastic bags, balloons, fishing line and/or hooks. The most common surgery performed is the removal of debilitating viral tumors, called Fibropapilloma, that affect over 50% of the sea turtles in the Keys and around the world. Reservations are highly recommended as space is limited, please call 305-743-2552 2396 Overseas Highway Marathon, FL 33050 MM 48.5 Educate Guests are invited to take a guided educational tour of the hospital facilities and the sea turtle rehabilitation area. You have to be a part of one of our programs in order to view our turtles. This educational experience lasts approximately 90 minutes and provides a presentation on sea turtles as well as a behind the scenes look at the hospital facilities and rehabilitation area. At the end of each program guests are invited to feed the permanent resident sea turtles. Research The Turtle Hospital and the University of Georgia College of Vet Medicine have been doing cooperative research into the causes of fibropapilloma, the devastating viral tumors which affect sea turtles. This is currently the only known disease affecting wild animals on a global basis. The virus has been successfully transmitted (proving that it is infectious) and current research concentrates on isolating the cause. Release The Turtle Hospital has successfully treated and released over 1500 Sea Turtles since its founding in 1986. The turtles are released in a variety of ways and at different locations depending on species. Greens are taken either to Pigeon Key via ambulance or they are taken to a spot 20 miles north of Marathon in the Florida Bay. Loggerheads are usually released at a local beach or launched off a boat into the gulf or ocean. Kemp s Ridleys are taken 70 miles west of Key West out to the coral reefs of the Dry Tortugas. 36

Their goal was to ensure the dolphins had a home here for life, and in doing so to establish a unique education and research facility. The Atlantic bottlenose dolphins and California sea lions presently living here provide a range of personalities and backgrounds. Over half of our family was born at the Center, while the other members have either come from other facilities or were rescued, rehabilitated and deemed unreleasable back into the wild by the Government and now have a forever home at Dolphin Research Center. ATTRACTIONS The 7 Mile Bridge In the Florida Keys, there is no name more famous than the iconoclastic Henry Flagler who dreamed and built the world famous Overseas Railroad in the early 1900 s. Called the 8th wonder of the world, this amazing ribbon of steel and concrete forever changed the history of the Florida Keys and linked the mainland of Florida to Key West. There are two bridges in this location. The older bridge, originally known as the Knights Key-Pigeon Key-Moser Channel-Pacet Channel Bridge, was constructed from 1909 to 1912 under the direction of Henry Flagler as part of the Florida East Coast Railway's Key West Extension, also known as the Overseas Railroad.
