We want ALL scouts to feel welcome. Also, WATER SPIGOTS AND FIRE BOWL ARE SHARED BY ALL UNITS. A Scout is Courteous. Be a good neighbor when camping. Leave room for others to pass by on the way to the water and rest rooms. When passing someone else s camp site, be respectful and go around rather than straight through. If you need assistance, please contact the Ranger, a Camp Master, or a Staff Member. Noise: Remember that others may need their rest, so keep the noise down after 10:00 PM. A Scout is Clean. Clean Up: Remember that as Scouts, we LEAVE NO TRACE. HELP CLEAN UP CAMP BEFORE LEAVING. All principles of Leave No Trace apply. Before departure, we ask that each unit clean its camp site and surrounding area so there is no remaining trash, paper, plastic, etc. It is ALWAYS good practice to bring plenty of strong garbage bags. We are a PACK IT IN, PACK IT OUT facility. Departure: Please be sure your tents and belongings are struck and loaded before the advertised departure deadline. GENERAL RULES AND REGULATIONS Please help us have a safe weekend by following the safety procedures and instructions listed below. 1. RULES FOR SCOUT CAMPING All Scouts are expected to wear their field uniforms ( Class A ) for check-in and for Saturday flag ceremonies. Activity Uniform is recommended to be worn during Events Scouts should always use the Buddy System (travel in groups of 2 or more) when at camp. Do not run in camp. Don t let an injury spoil your weekend. Two-Deep Leadership is required by National council for units camping. You must have a minimum of two trained leaders (one who is over 21) with your unit. Leaders MUST camp with their unit. Teams consist of Patrol Members, Crew Members, or Adults. No Siblings or Cub Scouts may participate. 2. FIRE REGULATIONS No liquid fuels of any kind. NO WOOD OR GROUND FIRES! Please note that the majority of our campfire bowls have been retrofitted for propane. An apparatus is available for a $5 rental fee to enable you to hook up a 5-gallon propane tank to the campfire bowl. 5-gallon tanks are available for rental at the Broken Hawk as well as bags of charcoal. Propane cooking is permitted. Charcoal cooking in above-the-ground containers (at least 12 inches) is permitted. Firestone Scout Reservation is a NO SMOKING FACILITY. This includes no vaping. 3. WATER AND TRASH DISPOSAL Please secure ALL trash overnight. REMEMBER that wildlife would like nothing better than to get at your disposed goodies. Trash Bags Please bring plenty of trash bags to bag to dispose of your trash in the dumpster. Do NOT keep food inside your tent. Take all trash with you when leaving camp. This is a PACK IT IN, PACK IT OUT facility. 4. PORTA POTTIES Please keep latrines clean. Please use them for their intended use ONLY! DO NOT use porta potties to throw away trash. 5. VEHICLES AND PARKING (Parking Permit) Park in designated areas ONLY! All vehicles entering the camp must have a Parking ID Pass. DISPLAY Parking ID pass prominently on dash. (Indicate name and Unit Number on permit.) Park vehicles so they are Head Out. (Back into your spot.) Cars that are blocking others or obstructing roadways will be towed. Any car parked long-term in the camp site (excepting cars with medical leave) may be towed or cause its family to be asked to leave. Please note that there will be a $35 environmental impact fee charged for any campers or RV type vehicles. T h e G r e a t P u m p k i n S m a s h! Page 4
FIRST AID INFORMATION Ensure your unit has your Medical Release Form and Parental/Legal Guardian Permission Release for all participants in your family. First Aid needs for minor injuries are the responsibility of the unit. Any Serious Injuries must immediately be brought to the attention of the Camp staff. Medical Personnel will be available. Any injury requiring a band-aid or more, must be noted in a written log and turned into Camp staff daily. In the event of a real emergency, STAY CALM, stay with the injured person, and send another adult or pair of scout buddies to notify staff. WILDERNESS AREA WARNING You should be aware that this is a wilderness area. There are, among other things, wild creatures native to this area. Among them are mountain lions, bobcats, coyotes, deer, raccoon, spiders, flies, ticks, ants, mosquitoes, and mice. The animals are wild and must be left alone. Some of the smaller animals (raccoons and mice) can get into tents, packs, clothes, food bags, etc. Keep all food and items with a scent stored appropriately so as not to attract these animals. DO NOT STORE FOOD IN YOUR TENTS! We have had previous complaints about the presence of bears in the area, but it turned out only to be someone who is an extraordinary snorer. However, on some mornings, coyotes do serenade beautifully. Be prepared to handle seasonal Poison Oak and Stinging Nettles. T h e G r e a t P u m p k i n S m a s h! Page 5

The Competition! **Youth will be competing in their patrols. Patrols are generally 4-8 Scouts who belong to the same unit. Should we have any lone scouts join the competition, we will gather them to be a provisional patrol. **Adults will be competing in their patrols. Patrols are generally 4-8 adults who belong to the same unit. Should we have any lone adults join the competition, we will gather them to be a provisional patrol. Event 1: Pumpkin Carving with a.22! Each team/patrol member will be given a pumpkin with 5 quarter-size circles on the front. When they approach the range, they will be given 25 rounds to carve those circles. Once the carving is done, they will decide what pumpkin is closest in showing all 5 circles to submit to the judges. Event 2: Small Pumpkin Shotgun Blast! Each team/patrol member will be given 3 mini pumpkins to shoot at. Each hit counts as 10 points. The total points of all the members will be tallied and averaged. The highest 3 averages win the points 1 st place 100 points 2 nd place 50 points 3 rd place 25 points Event 3: Tomahawk STUK in a pumpkin! Each team/patrol member will be given 2 Tomahawks. The objective is to stick the tomahawk in the pumpkin! Each stick counts as 10 points. The total points of all the members will be tallied and averaged. The highest 3 averages win the points 1 st place 100 points 2 nd place 50 points 3 rd place 25 points Event 4: Make a Bow and Kill a Pumpkin! Each team/patrol member will be given materials and instructions on making a bow at checkin. They must go to their campsite and make their bow. On Saturday, the bow must be approved by the RSO (Range Safety Officer). Each team/patrol member will be given 3 arrows to shoot at pumpkins on a hill side. The closer pumpkins are worth 10 the farther pumpkins are worth 100. The total points of all the members will be tallied and averaged. The highest 3 averages win the points 1 st place 100 points 2 nd place 50 points 3 rd place 25 points Event 5: Pumpkin Spoon Challenge! This Dutch oven challenge has one rule. The dish must include Pumpkin! No averages here the judges will decide. The winner gains 100 points 1 st place 100 points T h e G r e a t P u m p k i n S m a s h! Page 8
Event 6: Pumpkin on a Pike! Each team/patrol will be given 2 pumpkins. Each member will be given one try to shot-put a pumpkin onto the business end of a lashing pole. Stick it, impale it on the stick. Each impaled pumpkin is worth 50 points. No placing... Points awarded as earned 50 or 100 points. or 0 Event 7: Pumpkin Pie Scarf Down! Each team/patrol will be given one pie. They will choose one member of their patrol to eat the pie to the tin to the judge s satisfaction. The three fastest times will win the points. Oh and forgot to mention. No hands.. Bon appetit! 1 st place 100 points 2 nd place 50 points 3 rd place 25 points Event 8: Two-Man Saw Event! Each team/patrol will be given one 2-man saw. 2 cutters are chosen, and the others hold the log steady A log placed on two sawhorses will be cut on both sides. The side to cut through first and smash the pumpkin below wins the points Cut through first 100 points Event 9: Pumpkin Bowling! Each team/patrol will be given one pumpkin. Each member will be given one attempt to knock down all the bowling pins. If the pumpkin breaks before your entire team bowls, you are stuck and can bowl no more If your last bowler breaks the pumpkin, you gain 5 extra points. Event 10: Pumpkin chunking!!!!! Each team will need to construct, shoot and clean up in 1 hour Each team/patrol will be allowed to construct, using ONLY their Pioneering skills, a slingshot, catapult, trebuchet, or ballista. They will be assigned a construction time and have one hour to construct their device, shoot and clean up their area. No bolts or nails of any kind can be used (disqualified for the use of non-pioneering techniques). They must be able to launch a mini pumpkin in the air at the giant target to its certain doom The judges will award based on the accuracy of hitting the target. All will be judged based on category of the device. A Special award will be given to the best design executed and clean lashing and pioneering skills The winning entries gain 100 points 1 st place 100 points Each team/patrol will be given 3 small pumpkins to launch at the target. The more accurate; the higher the points, from 25 to 100! Total points will be counted for each group. The victorious will have state-wide bragging rights! Parking Rules: This permit must be on your dash and readable by Camp Staff. No trailers in the camping area. Park your vehicle HEAD OUT in case of emergency evacuation. DO NOT PARK OR LEAVE YOUR VEHICLE IN CAMP. Vehicles may enter camp ONLY to load or unload gear. If you park blocking another car and if the Ranger or Camp Staff cannot find you, you will be towed. BSA, GLAAC, or FSR are NOT RESPONSIBLE for items lost or stolen from vehicles. The Bow Making! Step 1: materials list and overview A bow like this is not going to take down a deer but in a survival situation being able to make a light bow out of available materials may just give you the edge you need to not die of hunger. Materials required: 1 packages of bamboo garden stakes 1 Roll jute twine Tools required: none. A pocket knife or small fine-toothed saw won t go astray {even a sharp rock} Step 2: arrange the materials First thing to do is lay out your sticks. Alternate them thickest and thinnest in bundles. T h e G r e a t P u m p k i n S m a s h! Page 15
Step 3: tie off the ends Take one of the two aligned bundles and even up the ends. Round lash it very tightly about 1 inch or so from the end. Then about a foot or so down the shafts round lash it again very tightly. Repeat with the other bias bundle. So what you should have now are two bundles of sticks lashed near the thinnest ends. Step 4: next step Take your two bundles, turn one around and interleave them into each other until the ends come within an inch or two of the second bindings. Round lash each of the bundles an inch or two below the ends. What you have now could be used as a weaker bow with a bit more wrapping. We want to make it stronger again. Step 5: beefing it up Tie them off very tightly and wrap the whole bundle in several places using a round lashing with the twine. Round lash the middle section to form a handle. Make all bindings as tight as you can. The energy stored in the bending wood should not be allowed to dissipate by sticks flexing away from each other. Step 6: nocking and stringing To form a "nock" round lash each end to form a knob that your string wont slide down over. The Cement string makes the bowstring and should be 4 to 6 inches shorter than the overall length of the bow unstrung try to avoid stretchy cord as this will steal power from the bow.
