The water that flows into the lake is water but becomes salty due to the high salt content in the lake. When empty, the lake becomes a giant salt. This lake is located in South Australia and is the focal point for the Lake Eyre. The lake was named after the first European to sight it, who was Edward John Eyre. Places of Interest~ Fraser Island Fraser Island, located off the southern end of the Queensland Coast, is the largest island in the world at 1840 square kilometers. it was known as the Great Sandy Island before becoming known as Fraser Island. The name changed due to the stories of Eliza Fraser. Eliza was the wife of a Scottish whose ship became ship wrecked in a reef a long way north of the island. They then sailed another boat and landed on Waddy Point where she was captured by Aborigines.

Advance Australia Fair The Australian National Anthem is Australia Fair. It replaced God the Queen in April 1984. First performed in 1878, and created by Peter Dodds McCormick, it had to win a to become the National Anthem. South Australia The South Australian Flag also has a Union Jack in the top left hand corner and the badge on the right hand side. The badge has a piping perched on a branch, surrounded by a golden circle. It was adopted on the 13 th January 1904. The present Coat of Arms was granted by King Edward VIII on the 20 th November. This was the anniversary of South Australia s foundations. The floral emblem is the Sturts Pea, the animal emblem is the hairy-nosed and the bird emblem is the Piping Shrike, otherwise known as the whitebacked. The gemstone emblem of South Australia was adopted in 1985. It is the opal. More than 80% of the world s opals are mined in South Australia. The marine emblem, adopted in 2001, is the leafy sea dragon.

Western Australia The Western Australian flag also has the Union Jack in the top left hand corner and the State Badge of a black swan surrounded by a yellow, on the right hand side. The Western Australian Coat of Arms was granted by Queen Elizabeth on the 17 th March 1969. It contains two kangaroos, each holding a. The floral emblem is the and the Kangaroo Paw. The bird emblem is the swan and the animal emblem is the (Banded Anteater).

Northern Territory The Northern Territory Flag, first flown on the 1 st July 1978, is completely to all the State Flags. It has a black panel on the left hand side that has a picture of the Southern on it. A seven petal Sturts Desert in white is on the right hand side on an ochre panel. The Coat of Arms was granted in 1978 by Queen Elizabeth. It contains a shield that has two Aboriginal on it. It is the only Australian Coat of Arms to contain all the bird, animal and floral emblems for that state/territory on it. The floral emblem is the Sturts Desert, the animal emblem is the kangaroo, and the bird emblem is the wedge-tailed.

Animals The Short-Beaked is a mammal that lays eggs and produces milk for its young. They are found all over Australia and are animals. They have short hair to keep them warm and then large spines, each a single, hard hair. These animals have a pointy snout and a long which enables them to catch the ants and termites that they eat. Baby echidnas are called a puggle. The platypus is only found on the east coast of Australia. They live on the edges of freshwater and rivers. This is where they build burrows to lay their eggs in and rest. They are great divers and swimmers. The platypus has an elongated covered with moist, soft, leathery skin. The body and tail are covered in a thick layer of fur. The male platypus has a toxic on the inside of both of their back ankles. This is used in defence against predators and other male platypuses.

Animals The Tasmanian Devil is the largest carnivorous in Australia. They are nocturnal creatures that are only found in Tasmania. They are covered with black fur with a patch of fur around their necks. They eat dead animals, eating the bones and all with their powerful jaws. Tasmanian devil babies are called. The red kangaroo is the largest kangaroo and lives in the red centre of Australia. They live in groups known as. They graze during the night on grasses and low plants and will drink if there is water but if they eat enough green food they won t need too. A kangaroo is known as a joey. When a male kangaroos fight, they look like they are boxing. They stand up on their legs and try to push their opponent off balance with their forearms. They can also use their tails to support their weight and start kicking with their hind legs.

Artist ~ Albert Namatjira Born: 28 th July 1902 Died: 8 th August 1959 Albert is perhaps the best known Australian Aboriginal. He was born Elea Namatjira and changed his name to Albert when he was baptised. He was born near Alice Springs and is best known for his watercolour Australian outback desert landscapes. He painted around paintings during his life.

Sportsman ~ Sir Donald Bradman Born: 27 th August 1908 Died: 25 th February 2001 Donald Bradman played first class for Australia for 21 years and achieved everything that was possible in the sport. His batting average was a century or runs. He became the only cricketer to be knighted in 1949. Donald Bradman has also been voted as the greatest male athlete for the past years in the 1988 Australian Confederation of Sport.

Australian Bush Poet ~ Banjo Paterson Born: 17 th February 1864 Died: 5 th February 1941 Andrew Barton Paterson was born near Orange in New South Wales. In 1885, he started submitting his and was having it published in the Sydney edition of the Bulletin under the name The Banjo. On the 8 th August 1886, he was admitted as a qualified solicitor. Following this, he wrote The Man from Snowy River, in 1890. He had his first published in 1895 under the same name. He became a war correspondent during the Second Boer War in 1899. His most famous piece, Waltzing Matilda, was written in 1895. The words to this poem were put with music in 1903. His image now appears on the Australian $ note.

Born: June 1855 Bushranger ~ Ned Kelly Died: 11 th November 1880 Born in Victoria as Edward Kelly, Ned s parents were John and Ellen. His father had been sentenced to years in gaol for stealing two pigs. He was then sent to Van Dieman s Land (Tasmanian, Australia) in 1942. In 1869, Ned was arrested for an assault on a Chinaman, held for 10 days in prison, but then released. The following year he was held for seven weeks as a suspected accomplice of the bushranger, Harry Power, but this was dismissed eventually too. Ned then spent the next few years in and out of goal. On the 15 th April 1878, a policeman named Fitzpatrick went to the Kelly s home to allegedly arrest Ned s brother, Dan. Fitzpatrick was a very unreliable man, who claimed that Ned had him. Dan went into hiding and Ned s mother, her son-in-law and a neighbour were all arrested and charged with the attempted murder of Fitzpatrick. Ellen received three years and the two men received six years imprisonment.

Bushranger ~ Ned Kelly Rewards were offered for the apprehension of Ned and Dan who were in hiding and since joined by their friends Joe Byrne and Steve Hart. In October 1978, four policemen were sent out to look for the Kelly Gang, but the Gang managed to surprise them. One officer surrendered and ran away but the others wouldn t and were shot dead. The reward for the members of the Kelly Gang was increased. The now also wanted the Gang whether they were dead or alive. This reward kept being increased over the coming months after the Gang held up quite a few. On the 27 th June, 1880 the Gang took over the Glenrowan Hotel, holding about sixty hostages as well. They had planned to derail a train that was to arrive, but a school teacher who was let out of the hotel, flagged down the and warned them. In a nine and a half hour siege, the hostages were released, lots of bullets were shot and the hotel was burned down by the police. All of the gang members, but Ned, were killed. Ned was badly injured and ended up being arrested. He was tried for the murder of the policeman and sentenced to death. On the 11 th November 1880 at 10am, Ned Kelly was hanged in the Old Melbourne Gaol.

Anzac Biscuits Anzac biscuits were baked by the wives and mothers of soldiers during World War I. The biscuits were sent over to the Australia Soldiers for them to eat. Ingredients: 1 ¼ cups plain flour, sifted 1 cup rolled oats ½ cup caster sugar ¾ cup desiccated coconut 2 TBSP golden syrup 150g butter ½ tsp bicarbonate soda Method: Preheat oven to 170 C. Place the flour, oats, sugar and coconut in a large bowl and stir to combine. In a small saucepan, place the golden syrup and butter and stir over low heat until the butter has melted fully. Mix the bicarbonate soda with 1 ½ TBSP water and add to the golden syrup mixture. It will bubble whilst you are stirring together, then remove from heat. Pour into the dry ingredients and mix together until fully combined. Roll tablespoonfuls of mixture into balls and place on lined baking trays, leaving a gap between each one for spreading. Press down on the tops to flatten slightly with a fork. Bake for 12 minutes or until golden brown.

Pavlova It is not known whether this dish was first made in Australia or New Zealand, but it is now recognised as a popular Australian dish. Ingredients: 4 egg whites 1 cup caster sugar 1 TBSP cornflour pinch salt 1 pinch citric acid ¼ level tsp cream of tartar Method: Preheat oven to 130 C. Grease baking tray and sprinkle with extra cornflour to prevent pavlova sticking to the tray. Place egg whites, salt, cream of tartar and citric acid in a bowl and beat for 10 minutes, until glossy. Gradually beat in the sugar, adding a TBSP at a time. Gently stir in the cornflour. Bake for 1 ¼ hours. Allow to cool in the oven. Decorate with whipped cream and fruit.

Damper Damper is a traditional Australian bread prepared by stockmen, swagmen and drovers. They were often travelling in remote areas with limited provisions. It was originally made with flour, water and salt and cooked in the ashes of a campfire. Ingredients: 250g self raising flour 25g butter ½ tsp salt 175ml milk Method: Mix the flour with the salt in a large bowl. Add the butter and rub in with your fingertips, until it resembles fine crumbs. Stir in the milk with a round bladed knife to make a soft but not sticky dough. Turn out onto a lightly floured board and shape into a soft ball. Place the ball on a lined baking tray and flatten gently till it has a diameter of about 17cm. Cut a deep cross in the top of the dough and brush lightly with milk. Bake at 190 C for 30 minutes or until golden. Serve warm or at room temperature, spread with butter and/or golden syrup.
