Take a train ride back into history Like in Monopoly, you may not be able to take a ride on the Reading, but you can join us for a ride on Amtrak from Alpine to El Paso and return. On Tuesday, March 27, 2012, WTHA will host a train trip from Alpine to El Paso leaving the Alpine Station at about 1:30 PM and arriving in El Paso at about 4:15 PM. ($80.00 round trip) The train will travel along the historic route of the Southern Pacific Railroad. In El Paso, we will stay at the historic Camino Real Hotel two nights ($88.00 per night plus tax, Breakfast included). Call the hotel (915-534-3000) and tell them you are with the WTHA group. While in El Paso we will enjoy the art, culture, architecture, and history of the city, the University, and the hotel. We are planning events that you will enjoy and hopefully add to the memorable moments of your life. Supper, Tuesday and Wednesday night is on your own or in the hotel dining room as a group. Wednesday lunch will be at a local restaurant. All meals are extra. On Thursday Morning we will re-board the train at 8:30 AM for the return trip to Alpine. Breakfast will be on you own either in the hotel dining room, the train s dining car or feel free to bring your own food and snacks for this trip. We will receive group rates for the train trip and the Hotel. The Rate for the train round trip is $80.00 with local transportation included. Add hotel rooms as needed at $88.00 per night plus tax. Plan to take this once in a lifetime trip back into our western history. We will arrive back in Alpine at approximately 1:45 PM on Thursday in time for the rest of the WTHA conference functions. Early Bird Thursday, March 29 th Motel Reservations at The Riata Inn (432-729-3800),the Paisano Hotel, or one of the Alpine conference hotels (Ramada Inn, Alpine (432-837-1100). Tour Leaves Alpine Ramada Inn at 2:00 PM - 6:00 PM - Art Tour to include Marfia Art collections and the World War II Murals at Building 98 on the Fort Russell property concluding with a reception at Building 98. Supper to follow at 6:30 PM at the Padres Inn. Those not going on the art tour can join us for supper at $15.00 per plate. Note on the Registration form that you will only be attending the evening meal. For those adventurous souls, Drinks and snacks at the Marfa Lights overlook outside of Marfa starting at about 9:330 PM until we all get tired and ready to leave (Cost TBA). For less adventurous - Cash Bar and fellowship at the Padres Inn, 10PM Until.

What to do after the conference? West Texas Historical Association March 31 st, 2012, WTHA plans a tour of the area around historic Alpine and Fort Davis. After the WTHA conference, you may want to join us for a tour of the area around Alpine and Fort Davis. The Tour Cost is $15.00. The WTHA can made reservations at the Prude Ranch for Saturday Night. The room rate for these accommodations is $90.00 plus tax for a room with two double beds in each room. Supper is planed to be all you can eat Chicken Fried Steak and trimmings at $11.00 for those staying at the Ranch. Those not staying at the ranch can join us for the buffet at $14.00 per person (see registration form). In the afternoon after the WTHA conference, we are plan visiting the historical ranches, western movie set, and desert museum around Alpine and Fort Davis. The evening program will include a trip to the Observatory Star Party (cost $14.00) on the Davis Mountains to enjoy the heavens and stars as they can only be seen in this part of Texas. Prude Ranch is a historic ranch in the Davis Mountains. The ranch has an indoor swimming pool, a restaurant, offers horse rides ($30.00 per hour), and offers many mountain vistas, and hiking trails. January 10, 2012 Dear Fellow WTHA members: We would like to invite you to attend the 89th meeting of the WTHA that is slated for March 30-31, 2012 at Sul Ross University in Alpine. Enclosed you will find the conference registration form, "News You Can Use," hotel information, and this year's program guide. Addition program information is available on the web site. We are happy to be back in Alpine, Texas for this year s meeting, and both the program and local arrangements committees have put together a fine program and welcome for us. As in our past meetings, the East Texas Historical Association and The Center for Big Bend Studies will each host a session. We welcome the members and families of the East Texas Historical Association, the Center for Big Bend Studies, the Texas Historical Commission and the South Texas Historical Association. The "early birds" will have the opportunity to get together on Thursday afternoon (2:30 P.M.) for the Marfa Art tour and supper. Paper Presentations will begin Friday morning beginning at 9:00 AM. Because of this change there will not be a tour on Friday Morning and lunch will be available on Friday at 12:00 P.M. The primary hotel will extend the conference rate ($72.00) for Thursday, Friday, and Saturday night. Reservations are going quickly, so book as soon as possible. The deadline for all hotel reservations is March 5, 2012 and after that time all remaining rooms will be released back to the hotels for rental. The hotels are to be listed on the bottom of the NEWS YOU CAN USE. Dead line for all hotel reservations is March 5, 2012. On Tuesday, March 27 th, 2012, the WTHA will host a train trip from Alpine to El Paso on AMTRAK. While in El Paso we will stay at the historic Camino Real Hotel and tour local art museums. Return to Alpine on the train will be Thursday morning. Call for hotel reservations at the Camino Real, 915-534-3000 ($88 per night plus tax). A special optional Saturday evening program is available which will include a tour of the Fort Davis area, an evening meal at the Prude Ranch and the star program at the Observatory ($15). Call the Prude Ranch for reservations ($134 with meals). You can join us for supper at the ranch even if you are not staying there.
