St. Matthews Cathedral This is the third visit of the TSS to Hungary, the first being in 1975 and the second in 1993. Much has changed in the intervening years. udapest has a long and turbulent history and has been fought over and virtually destroyed on a number of occasions. Now beautifully restored, its rich history is evident wherever you go. Situated on either side of the Danube, uda on the west bank is distinguished by the magnificent Castle and Gellert Hills, whilst the rich neo-gothic Parliament uilding whose design is based on the Houses of Parliament in London dominates the eastern or Pest bank. Arriving on Friday 4 May, transfer to the Zenit Hotel in Pest. The hotel is ideally located near the Danube and the Number 2 tram, which runs alongside the river and offers a full view of the Danube from the Parliament building in the north to the futuristic alna Centre in the south. That evening there will be the President s reception and dinner at the Dunacorso Restaurant located very close to the hotel, across Vigado Ter. The following day set out to explore the beautiful and historic city of udapest. Visit Castle Hill, including the Royal Palace, St. Matyas Tram in udapest
the lovely artists village of Szentendre. Enjoy a guided tour through its cobble stone streets. There will be time to explore on your own before lunch. Return to udapest with the rest of the afternoon at leisure. Danube end Church and the Fisherman s astion. There will be free time for lunch and further exploration of the area before a walking tour through the fascinating Jewish Quarter and see the Great Synagogue. This is the largest in Europe, built in the yzantine-moorish style by the Viennese architect Ludwig Forster. After breakfast the next day set out to the Hungarian countryside and visit the fairy tale Gödöllő Royal Palace, given as a gift to Austro- Hungarian Emperor Franz Josef I and his wife Elizabeth in 1867. It was used as their summer residence. After 1945 the palace was converted into a home for the aged and Soviet troops set up barracks on the palace grounds. Explore the palace and its gardens. After lunch enjoy a horse show at the Lazar Equestrian park. Watch the spectacular show in the stunning complex that offers breath-taking views of the Domony Valley. Return to udapest in the late afternoon. On Monday morning the surgeons will have the first professional meeting with Professor Harsanyi and his team at First Department of Surgery at Semmelweiss University. The partners will visit the Central Market which houses many a Hungarian food delight. After a tour with your guide relax at the famous Café Gerbeaud and sample its epicurean delights. In the evening enjoy dinner by river cruise along the Danube, take in the architectural beauty from the water. On Tuesday, the surgeons will meet with Professor Sotonyi at the Cardiovascular clinic in Varos Major. Partners will enjoy a visit to On Wednesday the whole party leave the city behind for the Danube end, one of the most scenic spots along the entire length of the Danube. This was the original residence of first kings of Hungary in the medieval era and offers sweeping views of the hills and river. Visit the town of Esztergom, the seat of the Roman Catholic Primate of Hungary. The asilica is the largest church in the country. The Cathedral s treasury holds the richest collection of Hungarian ecclesiastical treasures. After lunch visit the small town of Visegrad which is famous for its Fortress. Located on top of a hill, it offers wonderful views of the Danube end. From here board the boat for the relaxing and picturesque journey back to udapest. On Thursday, the surgeons will attend an inhouse meeting at the Hotel Zenit followed by the AGM in the afternoon. The partners will visit the Hungarian National Gallery and then have a guided tour of the Parliament building, home to the Hungarian Crown Jewels: this impressive building is adorned with 365 Gothic Towers. The afternoon is at leisure. That evening the TSS will entertain its hosts to dinner at Spoon, a fine dining restaurant moored on the river bank which offers beautiful views across the Danube. Friday morning is at leisure until it is time to transfer to the airport for the flight home. Esztegom
