DESK ESSENTIALS Desk Lamp - Goose neck lamps are very common, and some have space to store stationery Stationery: #2 Pencils (for exams with Scantrons) Pens (Bic/PaperMate/Etc) Eraser Sharpener Ruler Notebooks College ruled or wide ruled are common, from brands like Mead or Five Star Stapler Highlighter Binders with dividers Post its/sticky notes Scissors Tape Glue Note/Index cards Paper Clips *Binder paper/sheets *Push Pins/Tacks BEDDING ESSENTIALS Can be ordered ahead and/or bought upon arrival in the U.S. Twin XL Sheet Set Similar to a Twin, but slightly larger. Most sets come with an elastic fitted sheet and a flat sheet to put beneath the comforter (it helps keep the comforter cleaner for longer). We recommend two sets so you can swtich them out when one needs washing! Blankets - Most students have a comforter/duvet (down or alternative filling) and a fleece throw blanket. Pillows and pillowcases *Mattress pad/protector/cover - To protect from allergens, bed bugs, etc. *Mattress topper (foam topper/egg crate foam) - Removable bedding on your mattress for additional comfort BATHROOM ESSENTIALS Bath, hand and face towels Shower caddy - Containers to carry toiletries to the bathroom, recommended for communal bathrooms Slippers to wear in the shower - Recommended for use in communal bathrooms for sanitary reasons *Hand soap *Bathrobe *Bath rug - If you have an attached bathroom 2

KITCHEN ESSENTIALS Reusable Water Bottle Carry this everywhere! With all the walking you ll be doing, you ll need water with you at all times. Every building/floor should have a water filter to fill water. You can also use a Brita filter to filter tap water/ use water bottles with in-built filters, but tap water is generally safe for drinking in the US. Alternatively, you can purchase bottled water in bulk from the grocery stores/hilltop store. Mug - useful for tea, coffee and other beverages Snacks: Home comfort food - Don t bring any seeds or leaves, to avoid trouble at the airport (check the TSA website for a full list - https://www.tsa.gov/travel/security-screening/whatcanibring/food) Trader Joe s has some great instant and frozen food at affordable prices Cereal/Granola/Breakfast bars are great for when you re in a rush in the morning LA has many ethnic grocery stores that may sell exported goods from your home country Disinfectant wipes - Clorox is commonly used to disinfect items and spaces when you first move in. Dish soap, sponge - some good brands are Dawn, Seventh Generation, Palmolive *Utensils - it s convenient to have your own set, but you can always grab extra plastic ones at takeout food places. *Microwave-safe dishes - great for reheating leftovers, and most buildings have at least one microwave! *Disposable cups *Trash bags - if you have specific preferences, otherwise you can get free trash bags at the front desk. LAUNDRY ESSENTIALS Detergent, Softener/ Laundry Pods - Tide pods are commonly used and convenient Stain remover - Tide pens are great convenient ways to deal with stains Laundry bag/basket - You ll have to carry this back and forth from the laundry room Dryer sheets - Used to make your clothes smell nice and feel softer *Shout Color Catcher sheets - You can use these if you don t like separating colors and white laundry 3

WARDROBE ESSENTIALS Walking shoes - UCLA Campus is large, and you ll be happier if you have comfortable footwear walking to class. Everyday clothes Professional Attire, Shoes Many club or organization events that will require you to dress formally; you will also need them if you want to interview for internships or positions in professional organizations. Clothes for cultural events - Cultural organizations at UCLA host many of your favorite events and festivals. Gym clothes - JWC and Bfit are both excellent facilities that we encourage you to use Pajamas Underclothes Socks, shoes, sandals, slippers Sweaters/ light jackets - Evenings and early mornings get chilly in LA s unpredictable weather Swimwear - Even if you don t go to the beach, you can swim at Sunset Rec Hangers - You can get about 10/15 hangers for $1-2 at target. Shoe and Wardrobe organizers - in most dorm rooms, there is not much actual organized space. Hat/Cap - it is very, very sunny. Backpack - sturdy with good back support since you ll be carrying it around a hilly campus Sunglasses Glasses - get an extra pair in case anything happens! *Hooks for the side of beds or the back of your door you can get command strips for hanging up things. Beach towel - Santa Monica beach is just fifteen minutes away! Chargers - Cell Phone, Laptop, Camera, etc. Adapters - Different countries use different voltages so make sure are your appliances are compatible! Umbrella/Rain jacket/rain boots Extension cords/power strips - Dorms only have around 8 outlets for everyone! Calculator - 4 function, Graphing calculators or Scientific (find out what s common for your major) *Portable charger *Straightening Iron/Curler, if you use one *Jewelry holder/stand *Febreeze/Air freshener *Speakers *External Hard Drive - To back up your laptop in case of emergencies *Camera/ Polaroid *Iron (Steam irons are easiest to use) - This can also be checked out at the front desk *Dry erase board/white board/ bulletin board *Calendar/Monthly Planner - Also keep an eye out for free Passion Planners at the beginning of the year! *Printer - Convenient, but there are multiple places to print on the Hill and on campus. *Vacuum cleaner - You can also borrow one from your RAs! *Bed Risers - these can be used to increase under bed storage area. *Duffle bag for short trips *Batteries *Mini-fridge Microfridges can be rented through UCLA Housing, but personal refrigerators greater than 6 cubic ft. are not permitted. Standalone microwaves are not permitted. 5
