CRATER LAKE & THE OREGON CASCADES 2013 Luxury 6 DAYS / 5 NIGHTS Nowhere else can you see deep blue lakes and snow-capped volcanoes touching the sky as you can in Central Oregon. Beautiful forests blanket both flanks of the Cascade Range. To the west lie temperate rain forests while forests to the east are more arid, evoking the feeling of the Southwest U.S. Both sides host world-class rivers like the Deschutes and the McKenzie. Our Crater Lake and Cascades adventure explores a little of both environments, offering a nice blend of riding, hiking, watersports and many other activities at the perfect time of year. And when you have had enough action, the microbreweries, gourmet restaurants, shopping and spas await in the hip town of Bend and the quaint village of Sisters. pacific ocean Eugene California Washington OREGON Nevada Idaho Eugene Sisters Crater Lake National Park Bend Ride around the deepest, clearest alpine lake in the country in Crater Lake National Park. Enjoy organic Northwest cuisine, complemented by local Pinots, microbrews, cheeses and produce. Try a variety of outdoor activities, from hiking and mountain biking to rafting and golfing. Experience the geologic wonders of volcanic lakes, canyons and high peaks. Drink in the living the dream culture that makes Central Oregon a great place to live, play, and visit. Cheers! ITINERARY DAY 1: Basic Option: Diamond Lake to Crater Lake Approximately 20 miles with 2,600 feet of climbing Your Trek Travel guides will meet you at the Inn at the 5th (205 E 6th Ave. Eugene, OR 97401) at 8:30 AM on the first day of the trip. Following a 3-hour shuttle into the Cascades, you ll be welcomed to the Northwest with a gourmet picnic at Diamond Lake. In the shadow of your first volcano, Mt. Thielson, you can take a quick swim in the lake before your bike fitting. After a brief orientation and safety talk, you ll take to your bike and ascend to the rim of the caldera formed by ancient volcano Mount Mazama, now known as Crater Lake. While the climb is long and moderately challenging for a first day, a short shuttle can help minimize the climbing and maximize the scenery. We don t want to ruin the surprise, but cresting the rim and peering into the vast caldera lake may be one of the most memorable sights of your trip. The lake is one of the deepest in the world at 1949 feet and was formed about 7700 years ago when Mount Mazama erupted, and the contrast of jagged snow-capped peaks and crystal blue water is stunning. After this treat, you ll get to know one other better over drinks and dinner at the Crater Lake Lodge, before retiring to your room to rest. Hotel Crater Lake Lodge www.craterlakelodges.com DAY 2: Basic Option: Crater Lake Rim Loop Approximately 33 miles with 3,700 feet of climbing Short Option: Crater Lake Rim to Cleetwood Return Approximately 22 miles with 2,500 feet of climbing Hike: Crater Lake Cleetwood Trail Interpretive Boat Cruise: Crater Lake Today is your full Crater Lake experience. As you pedal the entire rim road around Crater Lake, marvel at the fact that the pre-eruption mountain was twice as high as the current rim. The blast that created the lake is thought to have been 420 times more powerful than the Mt. St. Helens eruption in 1980. With many viewpoints and hiking options along the route, you will see the drama and nuances of this stunning landscape from 360 degrees. A lakeside packed lunch follows a hike down into the crater where a boat awaits you. The boat tour brings you up close to features like the Old Man, the Phantom Ship and Wizard Island, while an interpretive Ranger from the National Park Service is on board to teach guests about these natural features of the volcano and lake. Tonight you will again dine at the Crater Lake Lodge. Personal Cycling Gear: On your trip Trek Travel provides a helmet, flat or caged pedals & a Bontrager saddle. Beyond what is provided on your trip, you are welcome to bring your own gear: a helmet, seat, pedals, shoes, etc. Just label and pack it in a separate, easily accessible bag. Remember also to bring spare cleats for your clipless pedals, as replacements during your trip are difficult to find. Hotel Crater Lake Lodge www.craterlakelodges.com

ITINERARY DAY 3: Basic Option: Cascade Lakes Highway: Osprey Point to Bend Approximately 47 miles with 2,100 feet of climbing Avid Option: Cascade Lakes Highway: Crescent Cutoff to Bend Approximately 70 miles with 2,700 feet of climbing Short Option: Cascade Lakes Highway: Osprey Point to Bend with hill shuttle Approximately 39 miles with 1,300 feet of climbing With Crater Lake in the rearview mirror, you will shuttle north 1.5 hours to the Crane Prairie Reservoir along the Cascade Lakes Highway. Reflections of the Three Sisters, Broken Top and Mt. Bachelor are visible in its waters a scene often used to advertise the Cascades. The serene Highway traces the eastern slopes of the mountain range and intertwines with countless lakes of varying clarity, color, and temperature. All the while, the surrounding pine forests intoxicate your senses. Midway through the ride, you ll take a break to eat lunch at Elk Lake Resort. This is also a great place to take a dip or rent a boat and cruise the lake. After lunch, the road climbs over the shoulder of Mt. Bachelor and descends 3,000 feet to Bend, following the course of the now-famous Pole Pedal Paddle race route. For those who seek a wilderness experience, skip the ride and hike to the sublime Green Lakes at the base of South Sister. Tonight you will toast with local brews to a big day and dine at a bistro in Bend. Hotel The Oxford Hotel www.oxfordhotelbend.com DAY 4: Basic Option: Tumalo High Desert Loop Approximately 38 miles with 1,500 feet of climbing Avid Option: Tumalo High Desert Loop with Cloverdale Loop Approximately 60 miles with 1,800 feet of climbing Free Afternoon in Bend Today you get to experience the dry side of Oregon as you cruise the High Desert Loop, a ride popular with locals. Several options allow for lots of miles or just a few, depending on how many other activities you want to pack into the day. Bend is renowned as an outdoor recreation mecca, so you may want to take advantage of one of the non-cycling adventures available. Your options include rafting the Deschutes River (Class 2-3), renting mountain bikes and riding the renowned Phil s Trail Network, hiking the Deschutes River Trail, floating or canoeing the river near town, playing golf at one of the many courses, shopping, touring the Deschutes Brewery, getting a spa treatment... the choices are almost endless and your guides will help to ensure that you have the day you want. Tonight is yours to explore town on your own and check out one of the eclectic and delicious local eateries. ITINERARY DAY 5: Basic Option: Bend to Smith Rock State Park Approximately 36 miles with 800 feet of climbing Avid Option: Bend to Sisters via Smith Rock State Park Approximately 66 miles with 1,600 feet of climbing Hike: Smith Rock State Park You ride deeper into the high desert during the first part of today, along pastoral roads fringed by mountains, stopping for lunch at the dramatic Smith Rock State Park. Besides being a world-class sportclimbing area, the Crooked River canyon that forms Smith Rock has an extensive network of trails, from mellow to strenuous. Some may want to take a climbing lesson this afternoon with a local guide or hike to watch climbers scale the famous Monkey Face, while others can choose to add an additional 30 miles and complete the ride into the pine forest of Sisters, cycling along quiet country roads. Or, consider taking advantage of one of the region s best spas, Shibui at Five Pine Lodge, for an out-of-this-world body treatment. Whichever activity you choose, this stellar day is sure to be a highlight of your Central Oregon vacation. This evening you will gather for a final social hour, enjoying more local brews and wine, and you will dine at the highly regarded Jen s Garden in Sisters. Hotel Five Pine Lodge and Shibui Spa www.fivepinelodge.com DAY 6: Basic Option: Sisters to Belknap Hot Springs via McKenzie Highway Approximately 40 miles with 2,200 feet of climbing Short Option: Sisters to Belknap Hot Springs with Shuttle Approximately 30 miles with 300 feet of climbing The McKenzie Pass bridges the dry side and wet side of the Cascades and is perhaps the most popular road to ride in the Northwest, and it just happens to be out your back door this morning. While many final days of trips tend to be somewhat anticlimactic compared to the rest of the trip, today is a truly climactic way to end your vacation of a lifetime! The 16-mile climb is the perfect grade and tops out with stunning views of expansive lava flows and affords views of many of the Cascade peaks, including Mt. Hood, from yet another new angle. The historic Dee Wright Observatory is the perfect place to take in the scenery and celebrate your conquest of the pass, because the next 22 miles are ALL downhill. Cruising through increasingly dense forest, you ll arrive at one of the country s most scenic rivers, the McKenzie. A final café lunch awaits you riverside, as do hot spring soaking pools and showers. Thank Your Guides, By Tipping: Gratuities for your Trek Travel guides are not included in your trip price. Industry standard is 5-10% of the trip price which will be divided by your guide team. Please tip your guides at your discretion, based on their level of professionalism, guest care and service.
