THIS WEEK IN CBRM - email - thisweek@kleeradio.com - 564-9022 PAGE 7 DON RAY HOME CENTRE Complete Line of Home Renovation Supplies GARAGE PACKAGES TOO!! 1100 MAIN STREET SYDNEY MINES BY PAUL POWER Myles Kennedy Year of the Tiger - Myles Kennedy is best known as being the lead singer and rhythm guitar player for the band Alter Bridge, as well as for his work with Slash-and he even collaborated with Jimmy Page, John Paul Jones and Jason Bonham on a number of, as of yet unreleased, songs. So, if you re writing with half of Led Zeppelin you must be pretty damn good-and Myles Kennedy is just that. Interestingly enough, this is his first solo albumand it s a bit of a departure from the usual harder edged rock and roll we re used to hearing from Myles. He was quoted recently as saying about the album; It s basically a concept record. It basically documents a period in my family s life when my biological father passed away and essentially what happened after that; how my mother, brother, and I had to start over. We ended up leaving where we lived just outside of Boston and started a new life; that is what Year of the Tiger is all about. His father died in 1974, the Year of the Tiger in the Chinese calendar. The album s namesake song, which starts things off here, has a real southern blues/roots vibe to it-somewhat like Steve Earle and Creedence Clearwater Revival s music. It s a 736-9722 great song. Songbird has a similar feel-and it comes across as something you could imagine BJ Thomas or Blood, Sweat and Tears releasing in the 1970 s, and Blind Faith has a slide guitar sound totally soaked in moonshine and bayou water, and a kicking low end supplied by Zia Uddin on drums and Tim Tournier on bass. As a matter of fact this whole album is basically a 3-piece effort, giving the whole thing a live off the floor sound and vibe. As for some of the other tracks; Nothing But A Name is one of the best songs here, and it has a real David Coverdale meets Soundgardenlike feel and Devil On The Wall is a close second with a shuffling, almost bopping beat and groove that is a bit out of place compared to the other songs, but we ll just treat it as a very nice departure. The album finishes up with the song One Fine Day, which really reminds me of a number that David Clayton Thomas (Blood, Sweat and Tears) might have done, yet the song also has a vibe that keeps things a bit more uptempo-but still slightly heady. I hate to pigeonhole this album but I do feel that it s likely something a songwriter/ musician/performer would enjoy more than the average Joe-unless you are already a Myles Kennedy/Alter Bridge fan-in which case you ll love it. PAGE 8 NORTHSIDE THIS WEEK - email - thisweek@kleeradio.com - 564-9022 TAX TIPS 2017 Can you share tax credits and deductions with a spouse? If one spouse is unemployed or has very low earnings, the other spouse can claim a spousal tax credit. There are also some tax credit amounts which can be combined and claimed on either spouse's return: ** Medical expenses - expenses for both spouses should be combined and claimed on the tax return of one spouse. It is often better to claim all medical expenses for both spouses on the return of the spouse with the lowest taxable income. This is because the medical expenses tax credit is for expenses in excess of the lesser of 3% of net income or a specified threshold. 3% of net income will be lower for the lower income spouse. This is a tax credit, not a deduction, so the rate applied to the medical expenses to calculate the tax credit will be the same for either spouse. However, if the lower income spouse won't have sufficient income tax to offset the tax credit, then it may be better to be claimed by the higher income spouse. ** Donations for both spouses should be combined and claimed on the tax return of one spouse, because the tax credit for the first $200 of donations is at the lowest tax rate. It often doesn't matter which spouse, because normally the tax credit will be the same amount for either spouse. However, if the higher income spouse has some income taxed at the highest federal tax rate, then the tax credit will be a higher amount for that spouse. You have to ensure that the donations are fully utilized, which also may work better for the higher income spouse. Some tax credits can be claimed by either spouse, or divided between spouses (Married or Common-Law): - line 306 amount for infirm dependants age 18 or older - line 364 public transit amount - line 365 children's fitness amount - not available 2017 and later - line 370 children's arts amount - not available 2017 and later years - line 369 home buyers' amount - line 313 adoption expenses - line 314 caregiver amount - 2016 and earlier years - Canada caregiver credit - 2017 and later years - line 423 family tax cut (FTC) - 2014/2015 only - can be claimed by either spouse, but not apportioned between spouses The deduction (not tax credit) for child care expenses must generally be claimed on the tax return of the spouse with the lowest net income. If you have any questions about your eligibility to split a credit or deduction please speak with your tax professional!
