PRR Cheery Blossom Time by Valli Hoski After attending a library conference in Philadelphia in late April, Harry and I explored a few historical districts. Hope you enjoy these views of the PRR Suburban Station, blossoming in the warm spring sun. (Photo credit: Valli Hoski) Santa Fe Terminal Complex by Jon Shea This note from Preservation Dallas is about the Santa Buildings in downtown Dallas (Legacies Magazine, Spring 2015). "The Mission Revival style Santa Fe Terminal Complex was constructed in 1924 as a series of four buildings containing the headquarters for the Gulf, Colorado and Santa Fe Railway and the Southwest's largest merchandising center. Underground railroad tracks served the complex and goods could be unloaded and delivered to the various buildings by a system of small steam locomotives in tunnels. Building No. 1 served as office space and still does. A garment center was located in No. 2 and is now loft apartments. No. 3 and No. 4 were both warehouses. No. 3 was demolished while No. 4 was converted into a hotel. In 1926, J. M. Haggar started a clothing manufacturing company in the complex, later known as Haggar Clothing, and coined the term slacks for clothing intended to be worn during 'slack time'. Buildings No. 1, 2, and 4 are listed on the National Register of Historic Places and 1 and 2 are City of Dallas Landmarks." Building #1 is located at 1114 Commerce Street. It is now part of the Federal Building complex. In this historic photo the area to the right is now occupied by the main building of the Federal Building. Santa Fe is carved on the front of the building. VP- Trips & Events Skip Waters reported on the upcoming 24 Hours at Saginaw event taking place May 22-23 at the Saginaw Depot. This is the 10th anniversary of the event and Skip has presenters from out of the local area signed up to give presentations. Kim s son will bring his portable model railroad for display and the Texas Western Club will have a presence in various events as well. Skip will give a presentation on the Crash at Crush during the Katy Association convention and will repeat the show at Saginaw. He also reported that the Temple RR Museum is hosting a 12 hour train watch from 9am-9pm on May 9. Skip gave a long awaited announcement, Our Book Is Finished! The publication of the chapter s book on the SP Eastern Lines, 1946-1996 is done and he had copies available for purchase. Books that were preordered will be shipped this week and dealer orders will be shipped next week. Author Dave Bernstein has produced an excellent effort and we thank him. In National news, Skip reported the Spring National Board meeting will be held in York, PA in a few weeks. As of April 15, we will be free of the contract with Fernley & Fernley and headquarters has hired a new vendor to handle the database at a considerable savings. Membership cards for this year are a priority right now. The chapter meeting ended at 8:15pm and Texas Western president Darrell Cowles picked up with the program. He gave a Power Point overview of the club s history starting in 1997. The club had built a layout depicting the Dallas/Fort Worth area that was in operation for 17 years until it was forced to be torn down in 2013 due to their building being sold. After working out a deal with the city of Forest Hills, the club signed a long term lease on the city s old community center and they are actively rebuilding their layout. They are attempting to accurately portray the Tower 55 area and surrounding trackage and businesses as it was in the 1960 s. The club members have asked if the chapter can offer any assistance in providing accurate information on the trackage location, trains that passed through the junction, local businesses that utilized the trains for shipments, and any other details that will make their reproduction more authentic. Their goal is to build a history learning tool that will be ADA compliant with 4 aisles and 5 turning radii and ADA compliant restroom facilities. The program finished around 8:45pm and members then toured the facility to inspect the progress the club has made in their construction and to comment on additions they could incorporate to make it more authentic.
