Location The Ruhr District The Ruhr District is the largest conurbation in Germany, and the fifth-largest in Europe. The Ruhr District is home to 5,1m people living on 4,435 km3. It stretches 116km from East to West and 67km from North to South. It has an excellent infrastructure of autobahns and rail lines, rivers and canals. Usually a traveler will not even notice when they cross from one city into the next; to the West the Rhine River is seamlessly connected to the Rhein-Ruhr network of waterways. Dortmund, Essen, Duisburg and Bochum are old cities which were founded in the Middle Ages along the Westphalian Hellweg. They are the natural urban centers of today s Ruhr District. Industrialization and the mining industry in the 19th and 20th centuries have shaped today s structure. The Ruhr District enjoys an international reputation as Germany s largest site for industrial exhibitions and Europe s largest concentration of research institutions. The Ruhr District s successful mix of large corporations and SMEs (small and mid-sized enterprises), its highly qualified workforce and excellent available commercial real estate make it a number-one location for business and investment in Germany.
