April 26 May 6, 2015 BENEFITING
About Run-Walk Events Run-Walk Events, Inc. is the organizer of the Race Across USA. It is a California Non-profit Public Benefit Corporation. Run-Walk Events purpose is to organize in lawful, fun, and world class running and walking events to raise awareness of the inactivity epidemic in young people and to support non-profit organizations whose structure and goals encourage young people and others to run or walk on a regular basis. About The 100 Mile Club The 100 Mile Club is the benefiting organization for Race Across USA. It is a national, school-based program with the goal to run or walk 100 miles during a school year. The program also teaches kids life skills, goal setting, and self-esteem while making physical activity a healthier habit for life. The 100 Mile Club has members in over 700 schools in nearly every US State as well as three other countries Canada, New Zealand and Japan! About Race Across USA According to the CDC, childhood obesity has more than doubled in children and quadrupled in adolescents in the past 30 years. At the present time, 12.5 million children, ages 6-19 in the United States are obese. Many more are overweight. Starting January 16, 2015, an international team of athletes will begin a 4 1/2 month journey, running the equivalent of 117 back-toback marathons across the United States with the goal of sparking a renaissance in childhood health and fitness. Runners will run stages that are approximately 26.2 miles (a marathon) long and participate in expos with students and the local community to get the word out. The event will start in Huntington Beach, California and pass through Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, Louisiana, Arkansas, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Virginia and finally Washington D.C. On June 2, the runners will finish the day at the White House in Washington D.C. The coast-to-coast running distance will be 3,080 miles.
Welcome to Georgia, the ninth state on the Race Across USA route. Georgia is a state located in the southeastern United States. It was established in 1732, the last of the original Thirteen Colonies. Named after King George II of Great Britain, Georgia was the fourth state to ratify the United States Constitution, in1788. It declared its secession from the Union in1861, and was one of the original seven Confederate states. It was the last state to be restored to the Union in1870. Georgia is the 24th most extensive and the eighth most populous of the 50 United States and is known as the Peach State and the Empire State of the South. Georgia is bordered on the south by Florida; on the east by the Atlantic Ocean and South Carolina; on the west by Alabama; and on the north by Tennessee and North Carolina. The northern part of the state is in the Blue Ridge Mountains, a mountain range in the Appalachian Mountain system. The highest point in Georgia is Brasstown Bald at 4,784 feet. Atlanta has been Georgia's capital city since 1868 and is the state s most populous city with about 444,000 residents. The city is situated among the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains, and at 1,050 feet above sea level, Atlanta has the highest elevation of major cities east of the Mississippi River. Atlanta straddles the Eastern Continental Divide. Rainwater that falls on the south and east side of the divide flows into the Atlantic Ocean, while rainwater on the north and west side of the divide flows into the Gulf of Mexico. Atlanta, which began as a railroad town, now contains the United States' third largest concentration of Fortune 500 companies, and the city is the global headquarters of corporations such as The Coca-Cola Company. Encompassing $304 billion, the Atlanta metropolitan area is the eighth-largest economy in the country and 17th-largest in the world. There are 15 Fortune 500 companies and 26 Fortune 1000 companies with headquarters in Georgia, including such names as Home Depot, UPS, Delta Air Lines, Aflac, Southern Company, and SunTrust Banks. Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport, the world's busiest airport as measured by passenger traffic and aircraft traffic is located in Atlanta. Atlanta is one of the most visited cities in the United States, with over 35 million visitors per year. Among the city s most popular visitor attractions are the Georgia Aquarium, the world's largest indoor aquarium; the Martin Luther King, Jr. National Historic Site, which includes the preserved boyhood home of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., as well as his final resting place; the Atlanta Cyclorama & Civil War Museum with its panoramic painting of the Civil War Battle of Atlanta; Centennial Olympic Park, built for the 1996 Summer Olympics; Zoo Atlanta is home to the nation's largest collections of gorillas and orang-utans and is also one of only four zoos in the U.S. to house giant pandas; and the Margaret Mitchell House and Museum, site of the writing of the best-selling novel Gone With the Wind.
Atlanta has a reputation as a "city in a forest" due to an abundance of trees that is rare among major cities. Even the city's main street is named Peachtree Street. The oldest city in Georgia is Savannah, which was established in 1733 and became the British colonial capital of the Province of Georgia and later the first state capital of Georgia. Each year Savannah attracts millions of visitors. The city s downtown area includes the Savannah Historic District and the Savannah Victorian Historic District. The area largely retains the original town plan prescribed by General James Oglethorpe who founded the colony of Georgia and became the first Governor of Georgia. Savannah was the birthplace of Juliette Gordon Low, founder of the Girl Scouts of the United States of America. The city also hosted the sailing competitions during the 1996 Summer Olympics held in Atlanta. Jimmy Carter, from Plains, Georgia, was President of the United States from 1977 to 1981. The following year he and his wife Rosalynn founded the Carter Center. In 2002, President Carter received the Nobel Peace Prize for his work to find peaceful solutions to international conflicts, to advance democracy and human rights, and to promote economic and social development through The Carter Center. He is the only U.S. President to have received the prize after leaving office. Other attractions in Georgia include: the Ocmulgee National Monument where there are traces of 17,000 years of continuous human habitation including major earthworks built more than 1,000 years ago. Paleo-Indians who were the first peoples who entered, and subsequently inhabited, the American continents came here to hunt during the Ice Age: the Etowah Indian Mounds the most intact Mississippian culture site in the South-eastern United States; Atlanta History Center which has one of the largest collections of Civil War artefacts in the U.S.; and Stone Mountain, rising 825 feet above the surrounding area, well-known for the largest basrelief in the world depicting 3 famous figures of the Confederate States of America: Stonewall Jackson, Robert E. Lee, and Jefferson Davis. Georgia is the number one producer of pecan nuts in the world. Thanks to World Walking for use of their state description.
