Itinerary for Sunday, September 2 nd, 2018 We will tour two of Frank Lloyd Wright's Houses in the Ohiopyle Area. This is a full day tour that will get back to camp a little later than everyone else. See Bus Schedule for detailed information on logistics 8:00 am Leave camp 9:30 am > 11:00 am Guided Landscape Tour A 90-minute experience on the Bear Run Nature Reserve surrounding the house, this hike allows you to enjoy the land that drew the Kaufmann family to this special place and inspired Frank Lloyd Wright. This walk is approximately 1.5 miles over moderately rugged terrain, and appropriate footwear and weather-related clothing are essential as the tour is offered rain or shine. The hike is designed for those that are interested in the grounds beyond the house itself and wish to experience a small portion of Bear Run Nature Reserve. After the grounds tour: You will need to place your backpacks into a bin that will be stored in the vendor's office during your house tour. 11:30 am > 12:30 pm - Standard house tour of Frank Lloyd Wright's Fallingwater Falling Water is perched on a rock above a gushing waterfall; this historic house was built for a Pittsburgh family by architect Frank Lloyd Wright in the 1930s, ingeniously designed to blend harmoniously into the tranquil and beautiful woods around it. The house was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1966. After its completion, Time called it Wright's "most beautiful job," and it is listed among Smithsonian's "Life List of 28 places to visit before you die". In 1991, members of the American Institute of Architects named Fallingwater the "best all-time work of American architecture," and in 2007, it was ranked 29th on the list of America's Favorite Architecture according to the AIA. After the house tour: Retrieve your bag out to the bin you gave to the vendor for storage. 12:30 pm > 1:15 pm Lunch You can eat a bag lunch from camp or food from Fallingwater Café. They do have a limited menu with premium prices. 2:30 pm > 3:30 pm - Tour Frank Lloyd Wright's Kentuck Knob Kentuck Knob, also known as the Hagan House, is a residence designed by the American architect Frank Lloyd Wright in rural Stewart Township near the village of Chalk Hill, Fayette County, Pennsylvania, USA, 45 miles southeast of Pittsburgh. Only seven miles away from Fallingwater, Kentuck Knob was built for the Hagan family, owners of a large dairy and friends of the owners of Fallingwater, the Kaufman s. Then 86, Wright said that he could shake it out of his sleeve at will and designed the house in his signature Usonian style around a still-fully-functioning hexagonal kitchen. The 240-degree L-plan home is made with rich natural materials such as native sandstone, red cypress, and a $96,000 copper roof. One of his last designs, Wright only stepped foot on the property once, for a brief visit during construction. 3:30 pm > 4:00 pm tour the Grounds of Kentuck Knob 4:00 Board the bus to head back to camp. 5:00 pm - Return to camp Page 2 of 16
