August 26, 2013 Is Your Food Safe? That is a question we don't often have to ask in the United States. Our speaker, Dr. Haley F Oliver PhD, an expert in the food safety field, provided us with a pretty good level of comfort regarding conditions in the U.S., mostly by sharing her experiences in Haiti and Afghanistan. While there are occasional issues with food safety here, other parts of the world have a long way to go when it comes to providing a safe food supply for their citizens. Many children die each year due to contaminated food and water. It isn't always possible to tell if food is safe from looking at it or smelling it. That bag of lettuce in the back of your fridge may look really slimy and unappetizing, it most likely won't kill you if you eat it. We are pretty well-versed in food safety principles such as keeping raw meat away from cooked meat and other foods, cooking foods to the proper temperature, etc. Such is not the case in places like Haiti and Afghanistan. Our speaker has visited both places with delegations from Purdue University and has seen firsthand the widespread problems in these countries. Chief among the issues are the use of contaminated water and primitive sewer systems that commonly run down the streets. She and her team have sought to help these countries with education and implementation of safe practices. Interestingly, our speaker says that she has been able to avoid food-borne issues in Afghanistan, mainly by making sure her food is thoroughly cooked, and, of course, by not drinking the water!

Little Free Libraries a Big Deal! We were pleased to have as a guest Todd Bol, the founder of Little Free Libraries. He was in town to witness the dedication of our latest library at Vincent Village. Todd started the idea by mounting a wooden container that looked like a school house on a post on his lawn as a tribute to his mother, who was a book lover and school teacher. Todd said there are over 10,000 little free libraries worldwide. We are quite privileged to be a part of this program via our Centennial project. You can find out more about the organization at www.littlefreelibrary.org. Shrimp on the Barbie? Well, I don't know about the shrimp part, but I'm pretty sure the "barbie" will be fired up at Dee Hoffman's home next Thursday August 29th. The occasion is a Friendship Exchange with rotarians from Australia's District 9710. The fun begins at 6 pm with a main course and soft drinks provided. If you come, please bring a side dish and any stronger beverages if desired. Please RSVP to Jane Wilks so that Dee knows how many to expect. Centennial Shirts Available Shirts sporting our club's Centennial logo are now available to order. A portion of the price will go toward our Centennial project. Please see the enclosed order form for details. Rotary Polio 5k Team
