Lilydale Youth Club what a great effort by so many Club members. I m sure the Youth Club weren t expecting the end result or the commitment of our Club to clean, repair and paint the Youth Club room. There are many to thank for the work they did over the 2 weeks, clean down the walls, roof beams removing the security shutters, repairing doors and architraves, etc. Members would have received the daily updates from Ian Darvell telling us what they achieved each day. We can t forget to thank Paint Right in Lilydale for supporting us by providing paint and other painting items, and also the Yarra Ranges Council for the promptly attending and repairing the roof. Lilydale Street Festival not only were Club members working in the Youth Club on Saturday 27 th Feb but we also had a team lead by Madalyn Parlet run the hot dog stand at the Street Festival for the Lilydale Centre Safe Committee. It was a warn day with a reasonable attendance, didn t raise as much as Madalyn would have liked but it was still a great effort. Croquette Challenge We challenged the Rotary Club of Croydon to a game of croquette on 1 st March. A very pleasant evening of fellowship, fine wine and pizza over several games of croquette. I think Renate and Patrick found some potential croquette players, Ann McCarthy in particular was a great team asset her accuracy ensured Lilydale won the evening and retained the trophy. Will Croydon be up to it next year? A BIG thank you to Madalyn Parlet for hosting a fellowship dinner at her home on Friday 4 th March. Madalyn hosted the evening to thank the team for the work at the Youth Club, in particular Ian, Des and Rob as well as everyone else. It was a very enjoyable evening, chatting and talking about the Youth Club and what they do. I attended the Welcome Home Dinner for the returned exchange students. Laurie McKee was also there including our exchange student Claire Brown, her parents Jo and Warren and her brother Declan. The students each spoke about their experience on exchange, the families they stayed with, the sights they saw. Claire told her story in a very imaginative and entertaining way. I m sure members will enjoy it as much as I did. And there is more. More desks, chairs and a cupboard have been given to our Club by Box Hill Institute s Lilydale Lakeside Campus. The desks and chairs are heading to DIK. Our support of the Water for Tibor Project has resulted in the drilling of the bore which is down to 60 metres, water has found but digging deeper will hopefully increase the amount available. Claire Brown sponsored by our Club along with the other students spoke about their exchange. The stories they told were inspiring, they talked about the challenges, being homesick, the food, the sites the language difficulties. They spoke about the friendships they made and the families they stayed with. Claire spoke about her exchange in a very different and interesting presentation. Claire s parents, Jan Warren and brother Declan attended the dinner. Also in attendance was Lawrie McKee. It was great to catch up with Lawrie. Claire will speak to the Club at our meeting on 8th March. Bryan McCarthy

LILYDALE STREET FESTIVAL Rotary club of Lilydale held a hot dog and fairy floss stall at the Lilydale Centre Safe Street Party. Monies raised will go toward the future maintenance of Lilydale's new CCTV cameras. Madalyn Partlet organised a team to operate the hot dog and fairy floss stand. It was a quite festival with lots of local community groups and children s activities for the community to enjoy. Fellow Lilydale Rotarian Chris Helleren was selling her cheeses and meats next to our stand. Due to the afternoon being quiet, the festival closed earlier than advertised. We enjoyed ourselves, especially the fellowship and interacting with the community. Madalyn, Bill, Jenny and Anne with Tony Smith MP. Jenny Selway INVITATION to SUZUKI NIGHT MARKET The Night Market is held every Wednesday at Queen Victoria Market. It features hundreds of stalls selling food, drinks and unusual items. It includes entertainment by bands and buskers. It is very crowded and exciting. Ian and Helen Darvell invite you to join them for a casual evening enjoying what the Market has to offer on WHEN: WEDNESDAY 23 RD \ MARCH TRAVEL: We will leave Lilydale Station catching the 5.09 train to Central station. We will leave the train at Melbourne Central for a walk along Latrobe street to Queen Street then up Queen Street to the market (a 3 block walk). At the market you are free to explore and enjoy some of the foods we suggest buying and sharing several snack size foods. We will leave at about 8.45 to catch the 9.11 train at Central Station to Belgrave (change at Ringwood for Lilydale) COST: Your train fare plus food, drinks or items you wish to buy. RSVP: If you wish to come or need more details please contact Helen or Ian 0418 391 090 or 97350908 Hartley organised the games and ensured that all competitors had the mallets and balls to start their games. Patrick demonstrated how to play the game and numerous team members practiced there mallet swinging techniques, and the power needed to strike the ball and aim it for the hoops. The teams formed up and under a warm setting sun the games began. A number of games were played with Lilydale and Croydon neck-and-neck, some questionable rulings were made, competition was fierce and there was lots of extraordinary shots at the hoops. Delwyn and Graeme picked up the pizza s which paused the games. The competition was discussed at length, with some of the players rising to the challenge, demonstrating some very good croquette techniques and potential croquette players for the Croquette Club. Who won you ask? Well Lilydale did but it was close. Croydon retired quietly, but certainly played well and we look forward to Croydon playing against us again next year. CROQUETTE CHALLENGE The Rotary Club of Croydon rose to the responded to our challenge of a game of croquette. The Lilydale Croquette Club prepared the grounds and made it ready for the heavy competition between these two historic Clubs. Corydon, ably lead by President Richard Gilham and coach Steven Bode had a small but competitive team. Patrick

TABLES AND CHAIRS GALORE The new Box Hill Institute Lilydale Lakeside Campus are very generous in allow our Club to collect used tables, desks and chairs from storage. These items were left by Swinburne when they closed the site and are surplus to what Lilydale Lakeside Campus now need. Through the generosity of Tim Hewitt, and numerous other Club members, the items have been stored in the Stables at the Hewitt residence. 121 stackable school desks were collected prior to Christmas and stored in the Stables. Arrangements were made to have them packed up in readiness for Wayne McKenzie R/ Belgrave for loading into 2 shipping containers in Clayton to be sent to Cambodia and Fiji. Lilydale Lakeside Campus has been very generous to us, with some 806 items being pick up. This means students in East Timor, Cambodia and Fiji can sit at desks and learn. Tables and chairs were also delivered to The Salvation Army in Mooroolbark. None of this happens without the generous time and effort of our members and friends, so thank you to all who gave their time to help. YOUTH CLUB FACILITIES SOCIAL EVENING We had a lovely evening on Fri to celebrate the efforts of the workers on the Youth Club facilities. 16 people enjoyed good food and fellowship on an evening where the weather could not have been more perfect for an outdoor function. It was a fitting end to two weeks of intense effort on the part of a core group. Madalyn Parlet WORKING BEE AT THE LILYDALE YOUTH CLUB As most members know, the Lilydale Youth Club Restoration has been driven by PP Ian Darvell. He has been ably supported over the 10 days by many Rotarians and partners. The following is day by record of their efforts. DAY 1 Today, Wednesday, February 17 th, we started work on the Youth Club refurbishment. We have erected 2 sets of scaffolding, Removed lots of redundant fixings. Scraped down a major portion of the walls, removing loose paint and lots of glue, tape, and other fixing agents. Swept down a section of the under roof area. Installed 2 light fittings in the meeting room. Finally enjoyed a pleasant morning tea and Lunch. Many thanks to our workers today inc:- Des Shiells, Anne McCarthy, Helen and Ian Darvell. A lot more was achieved today than expected! DAY 2 Another great effort today with more scrapings and a great effort put into the washing down of the walls. We have been sweeping lots of accumulated dust etc from the roof area and have made a start on the painting of the Steel work at the highest part of the under roof area. The owner of Paint Right in Cavehill Rd is assisting us with the donation of all paints, brushes, Sugar soap, Paint rollers and Masking tape. This is an amazing gesture on his behalf. The total cost is around $1200-00 to $1500-00. A great bloke so if you are looking at painting in the future he will certainly look after you (please spread the word). Thanks again today to Des, Jenny Selway, Anne McCarthy and Helen D. Tomorrow we will be continuing with cleaning, filling, scraping, repairs and painting. Don t forget there is no work being carried out on Saturday, but we are back again on Sunday from 9-am. We expect to be working throughout all next week and the following weekend. Look forward to catching up with you. DAY 3 Another fruitful day at the Lilydale Youth club. Thanks to Des Shiell, Anne Van Horrick, Helen Darvell, Helen McDonald and Geoff Welsh we achieved the completion of the washing of the walls. This was a mammoth job combined with the removal of all types of adhesives etc. We are now into the patching and filling of the walls before they are sanded prior to painting. A large part of the roof steel work has been painted. Again we were well fed at morning tea and lunch. We are dining alfresco style (at our storage shed). We are having a break Saturday and continuing on Sunday in conjunction with the youth club members. Still lots to do so we hope to see lots of new faces over the coming days. DAY 4 The Juggernaught rolls on with day 4 again ticking off some of the tasks required..our gang of: practicing patchers persisted perfectly preparing of walls -particularly Peter. Try saying that 6 times. Many thanks to our group today consisting of Peter Loosley, Helen Darvell, Anne McCarthy, Brad Formby and Des Shiells. We managed to patch a lot more of the wall area, brush down some more of the roof, clear the rubbish from over the kitchen area, repair the door leading into the Basketball stadium, fit a piece of timber to level the floor between the 2 halls and more steel work painted. One of the highlights this morning was the Cheesecake provided by Anne van Horrick. Went down well at morning tea and lunch. Once again Helen D provide our lunch including cake. We are not starving at the Youth club, but a couple of us are getting a little worn out, so we have decided to make a rostered day off. There is still quite a lot of work to be done, so if you are looking at trying to fill in some spare time, come down and enjoy the fun. Our roster for the week is looking a little thin. Some more hands would be greatly appreciated. DAY 5 Busy day at the Youth club today with many hands making light work. Thanks to Philip Herry, Anne van Horrick, Margi Sank, Patrick Hartley, Michael Gavin, Des Shiells and Rod Busst. Both Des and Rod put in a big day working on repairs and rebuilding doors, door locks, architraves, skirting boards etc. Most of the patching is completed and sanded. Margi did a great job with the patching and filling. We have picked up the remainder of the paint to complete the walls. The painting of the steel roofing trusses carries on, but the end is in sight. It has been said that I have almost as much roof paint on myself than on the steel. Being red it looks as if I have been doing a round or 2 in the boxing ring and come off second best. We will be starting to paint the higher parts of the walls on Wednesday. Kennards Hiring are putting aside a spray gun for us from Wednesday for a couple of days. Still lots of other jobs to be done, so we would like to see some more helpers from Wednesday on until Sunday. As with a lot of jobs sometimes things don t go as planned. Unfortunately today at lunch time we ran out of Anne van Horrick s cheesecake! Many tears flowed and some sobbing was heard during the afternoon. But we did carry on working (even if a little depressed). Don t forget we are having a Rostered day off tomorrow () so we will be bright and alert for our meeting tomorrow night. Thanks again to Helen D for supplying lunches. DAY 6 WOW What a difference a day makes. Today saw a huge difference to our worksite. We now have over half of the higher walls painted, thanks to the hire of spray painting unit from Kennard Hire. The change is quite dramatic and shows how with the right preparation the final paint work is achieved quite quickly. Des handled the spray unit like a pro. Rod has continued with several repairs to skirtings, doors etc. We have put a final coat of patching to a lot of the walls and a lot of the final sanding has been done, thanks to Jenny Selway, Anne van Horrick, Anne McCarthy, Helen Darvell and Geoff Welsh. Ian D continues with the clean down of the roof area and steel work painting. Overalls look like a blood bath. We expect to finish the top walls tomorrow and hope to start cutting in of the lower walls for the rolling. Still some repairs to be done so there is still lots to do for

anyone with some spare time.(we don t have any names listed for the next few final days). The Yarra Ranges Shire have done a great job by organising some plumbers to install proper flashing between each building. That should be finished tomorrow. Many thanks to Sharon for her muffins and cleaning cloths, Delwyn for her apple slice and Helen D for lunches. These are always appreciated during our breaks. The Leader newspaper will have a photographer on site some time Monday, so we would like some of our members to make themselves available at that time. As yet we have not been given a time so I will email when I find out. DAY 7 Today saw the last part of the high wall area painted and it certainly brightens up the room. Des seems to enjoy the spray gun. A lot more carpentry was completed tody including the refixing of the main door, aligning doors and door frames, locks and hinges. Rod repaired a section of the floor that had broken away. At the end you wouldn t know it had been altered. Great job Des and Rod Thanks again to Phil Herry, Helen D, Patrick Hartley and Michael Gavin for their efforts today preparing the walls and fittings for a coat of paint which should commence tomorrow. Ian is still labouring away at the steel trusses, but the end is in sight. It was a major clean up tonight which hopefully means we worked pretty hard. Thanks also to Helen D for morning tea and lunch. Tomorrow we may be a little short of labourers so if you are looking to fill in some time come along and join in the fun. DAY 8 Another brilliant day of work at the Youth Club. Thanks to Annie Wheeler, Helen D, Helen McDonald, Anne McCarthy, Patrick Hartley, Michael Gavin and of course Des Shiells. Achieved a considerable amount of tasks today including door repairs, skirting repairs, patching, sanding, cutting in around the lower wall area and a first coat of paint on over half the walls. It s looking great! The amount of preparation is now unseen behind the top coat making the hard work worthwhile. Still a lot of work to be done yet, so hopefully we will get some help from the Youth Club members as well as our own members tomorrow and Sunday. We thought Helen Mc was trying to take some of the paint home with her, with paint on her glasses, face and hair. Thanks again to Helen D for lunch and Madalyn for supplying lamingtons. They were well received and well eaten. After a big day I m sure we will all be enjoying a well earned drink tonight. Thanks again for a fantastic effort. DAY 9 It s getting difficult to come up with new WOW factors to describe the works carried out at the Youth Club. Today was another huge day with lots and lots of volunteers from our club and the Youth club. It never ceases to amaze me of the dedication of our members and partners to a worthwhile project. Many thanks to Helen McDonald, Annie Wheeler, Helen Darvell, Brad Formby, Michael Gavin, Phil Herry, Gerry van Horrick, and Des Shiells. Also a thanks to Michelle Matthews and her brother from the Youth club committee. We completed the total clean down of the roof area, finished the steel trusses, removed 2 roller shutters supports and bulk head, removed and ground down steel supports for the bulkhead finished patching of walls, doors and skirtings, painted a first coat on all skirtings, architraves and most doors. WOW! Didn t finish until 5-30 and I am sure we were all a little weary by the end of the day. Also had a visit from our Federal speaker Tony Smith and family, who were very impressed with the works carried out. Thanks again to Helen D for morning tea and lunch. We even managed a short break for afternoon tea as well. Tomorrow we are on deck again for what should be a clean up of a lot more of the works inc removal of scaffolding, final wall coat, final coat of architraves skirtings, and doors, As well as a lots of other minor tasks. DAY 10 Again it was great to have so many helpers to work toward the completion of the upgrades. Today we put a second coat on skirtings, architraves and doors. Painted steel brackets and walls while Des built a frame for the huge mirror and mounted onto the wall. This was built using up some of the framework which we removed when pulling down the roller shutters. The mirror was previously sitting on the floor resting against the wall (not very safe). Great job, Des recycling existing timber. Thanks again to Annie Wheeler, Anne van Horrick, Helen McDonald, Helen Darvell, Brad Formby, Patrick Hartley, Phil Herry, Des Shiells, Michelle and her brother Frank from the Youth Club. Lots more achieved and we had hoped to finish today, but we will be back tomorrow for the almost final jobs. Our tasks to finish include the completion of the final coat on the walls, kitchen ceiling to be painted, second coat on some steel work, Second coat on main door a few little touch up jobs and a thorough clean out. We have the Leader newspaper attending tomorrow afternoon at 3-30 for some pictures and we should be in a good position by then. If you do have any spare time tomorrow, it would help immensely. DAY 11 Well at last we can say that the refurbishment of the Youth Club has been completed Monday. February 29 th 2016. Final coats on walls ceiling, doors and trims, mirror painted, windows cleaned inside and out. All this was completed at the time the photographer from the Leader turned up. Local councillors (Terry Avery and Maria McCarthy) were there as well as a rep from the Youth Club and a young fellow who went a round or two with Ian D. The young fellow won. Many thanks again to Helen McDonald, Anne van Horrick, Helen D, Phil Herry, Tim Hewitt and of course our boss Des Shiells. Des has done an amazing job over the last couple of weeks, it would not have gone as smoothly if Des had not been there to guide us. We are still proposing to build and install some notice boards next week and maybe a couple of touch ups. Once again a big thank you to Helen D for lunches etc. I cannot thank the Rotary volunteers enough, they have done an amazing job and given up a lot of their spare time over the last couple of weeks We can all be proud of the outcome. Regards Ian D. ALMONER'S REPORT Our Club Bulletin Editor, Jenny Hill was not able to prepare the Bulletin for this week's meeting due a unforeseen hospital admission. I understand that Jenny is OK but needs treatment which can only occur in hospital, we wish Jenny a speedy recovery. CUSHION BAGS Sharon Chuck has been active in promoting the sales of the Club's cushion covers, and has made all these bags to aid the movement of the cushion to our various sales points, currently stored in Tim Hewitt's garage. DISTRICT CONFERENCE RIDE FOR RESEARCH DOLLARS PP David Ferres, Rotary Club of Croydon is speaking to the Club on 12th January about the 9810 District Conference Ride for Research Dollars. This year is a significant year for the annual event, it is in its 30th year and the ride will achieve a huge milestone of raising $1 Million. Check the website for more details 9810 District Conference Ride or The Million Dollar Milestone Ride The 30th Annual Ride for Research $$$$'s March 2016 The Million Dollar Milestone Ride combines FUN, FUNDRAISING and FELLOWSHIP and is a bike ride not to be missed... The next Rotary Ride for Health Research Dollars will be held from Monday 14th to Saturday 19th March 2016. The ride will start in Mansfield and conclude in Shepparton. A distance of 650 Kilometres over 5 days.
