The Vientiane College academic year is divided into four terms. Each 40-hour term lasts for 10 weeks and classes are scheduled over 3 days (Monday, Wednesday, Friday or Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday). 2. ATTRACTIONS 1. GREAT SACRED STUPA (PHA THAT LUANG) Pha That Luang ('Great Stupa') is a gold-covered large Buddhist stupa in the centre of Vientiane, Laos. Since its initial establishment, suggested to be in the 3rd century, the stupa has undergone several reconstructions as recently as the 1930s due to foreign invasions of the area. It is generally regarded as the most important national monument in Laos and a national symbol. 2. GREAT SACRED STUPA (PHA THAT LUANG Patuxai is a war monument in the centre of Vientiane, Laos, which was built between 1957 and 1968. The Patuxai is dedicated to those who fought in the struggle for independence from France. 3.) SOS CHILDREN S VILLAGE PAPER MAKING AND SILK WEAVING SOS Children's Villages started working near the capital city of Vientiane in 1993. At present there are six SOS Children's Villages in Laos, five SOS Youth Facilities, six SOS Kindergartens, five SOS Hermann Gmeiner-Schools, one SOS Vocational Training Centre, three SOS-Social Centres and one SOS-Medical Centre. Students will be able to do interaction and cultural exchange with the children. And also they can learn paper pulp making and silk weaving from the children. 4.) ATTRACTIONS IN PAKSE GOLDEN BUDDHA (CHPASAK, NEAR PAKSE) You have to climb a set of stairs atop the hill to meet the Great Buddha himself. The climb may be a challenge, especially in the typical Pakse climate. But the view from the hill is rewarding. You can see the river and the runway at Pakse airport. And it will be breath-taking scenery! 13
KHON PHAPHENG WATERFALL (AT PAKSE) East of Don Khon on the Mekong River is the jewel of Champasack Province. Further downstream, the Mekong cascades across a wide mouth of rock which slopes in curvilinear pattern is sometimes tinted by rainbow. It s the Lao Niagara, the widest waterfall of Asia, more than 20 kilometers width. A place where the Mekong River takes a drop before continuing its course into the South China Sea via Cambodia and Vietnam. It s also renowned as a fish basin. These spectacular waterfalls render this section of the Mekong River unavailable 2.) Visit an old Buddhist monastery. Re-cross to the old French railway line. Walk up it for about two hours, passing an ancient French cemetery. Check in at Sala Phae and Auberge Don Khone where we spent the night of Day 1. Change to swimsuits and shirts and hats. Get bicycles, ride to the restaurant near the bridge to Don Dhet. Lunch time Bicycle along the rim of neighboring Don Dhet island and past the northern wharf to enjoy cold coconuts or, for the adults, iced coffee. Cycle to the other side of the island to look at the gigantic fishing traps in the Sahong Channel. This is where the Lao government wants to build a dam that would block the only up-downriver channel and the only migration route for the giant catfish.dinner time Dinner Rest for the day Day 4 Paddle to Khone Prapheng/drive to Don Daeng (B/L/D) 0700hrs and Check Out.
