Welcome! We re glad you are joining us for the Powhatan District Camporee. The Camporee will have an Amazing Race theme, with competing Saturday to become the winner of the inaugural Powhatan Cup. This Guide provides important information for participants and volunteers at this year s event. First, some important information if you read nothing else, make sure you read this section. Location The Flying Circus is located in Bealeton, VA, roughly one hour from Herndon. Parking is available at the Camporee site. To ensure one-way traffic flow, all scouts and volunteers should enter through the staff gate on Rt. (also known as Ritchie Rd.) All participants should exit through the main gate. Directions: From I- West, take exit to Rt. South. Go approximately miles, take Rt. South towards Fredericksburg. The Flying Circus is on the left after miles, at Rt.. Powhatan District Webelos-Ree The Camporee is being held in conjunction with the Powhatan District Webelos-Ree. Boy Scouts and Webelos will participate in several joint activities (below). Camping areas will be separated per BSA requirements (see Map, end of document). Joint Boy Scout Webelos Activities Several joint activities are planned; the following times are tentative:. Flying Circus Airshow (: p.m. Saturday). Evening Flag Ceremony (:0 p.m. Saturday). Campfire Program (: p.m. Saturday Assemble at :00 p.m.). Closing Ceremony (:0 a.m. Sunday) Airshow All participants and volunteers will enjoy an airshow Saturday afternoon. The Flying Circus will perform an abbreviated version of their public airshow normally presented Sundays to the public. Airshow admission is included in the participant fee. Come watch as pilots perform acrobatics in the air in vintage biplanes. Powhatan Cup Competition will compete Saturday to win the inaugural Powhatan Cup, accumulating points via frequent flyer miles throughout the day in a variety of events:. Amazing Race Stations (Maximum of,000 miles for each of pit stops). Scavenger Hunt (Maximum of,000 miles for completing the challenge). Campfire (Miles awarded for best skit and best song,000 miles for winner,,00 miles for runner-up in each category) The Patrol with the most frequent flyer miles will be awarded the Powhatan Cup at the end of the Campfire. The winning Patrol will have their Patrol Name and Troop Number engraved on the trophy, which they will assume temporary ownership of until the next Camporee. Page of

Amazing Race Stations will be issued a scorecard and will visit pit stops in seven countries. Each pit stop will provide patrols a scout-skills related challenge, the rules and scoring for which will be printed on a Route Info clue. Two stations will provide a choice of two challenges (or a Road Block in Amazing Race terminology). While most of the stations are purely performance-based challenges, one station does introduce a random element. Each challenge will last minutes, with five minutes between stations as follows: - minutes Clue Reading/planning - minutes Activity Time - minutes Scoring Time - minutes clean-up/set-up & transition to next site Each station will be equipped to accommodate four patrols simultaneously. Patrol Needs and Requirements Each Patrol should bring a compass, exactly one copy of the Boy Scout Handbook, and a pen. may have between and scouts each. Merit Badge Program An optional Merit Badge program will be offered Saturday afternoon from : p.m. to p.m. Scouts should bring merit badge blue cards to the event. Merit Badge sessions are limited to scouts per session, and scouts are encouraged to register in advance on the event website. Preference, if necessary, will be given to scouts who pre-register in advance. Describe some kinds and uses of aircraft today. Explain the operation of piston, turboprop, and jet engines. b. Point out on a model airplane the forces that act on an airplane in flight. c. Explain how an airfoil generates lift, how the primary control surfaces (ailerons, elevators, and rudder) affect the airplane's attitude, and how a propeller produces thrust. d. Demonstrate how the control surfaces of an airplane are used for takeoff, straight climb, level turn, climbing turn, descending turn, straight descent, and landing. e. Explain the following: the recreational pilot and the private pilot certificates; the instrument rating. Astronomy Page of pm : pm and :0 :0 pm (both day and night sessions required). Find out about three career opportunities in aviation. Pick one and find out the education, training, and experience required for this profession. Discuss this with your counselor, and explain why this profession might interest you (with Lt Col Lawver at the Camporee). c. Make two sketches of Big Dipper orientation b. Using Internet, books, and other resources find out which of the five most visible planets are visible over next year a. Sketch face of moon indicating at least seas and craters (Note: this must be done using a telescope, and can be done at Turner Farm in Great Falls on Friday nights. Cannot be done at Camporee as moon will rise too late. See www.analemma.org for info.) b. Sketch phase and daily position of the moon at same hour and place for days in a row First Aid : pm pm. Prepare a first-aid kit for your home. Display and discuss its contents with your counselor. Space Exploration pm : pm Note: To subsidize supplies for this merit badge, Scouts should bring to the class $ cash or check payable to NCAC-Powhatan.. Design a collector's card, with a picture on the front and information on the back, about your favorite space pioneer.. Research two possible careers in space exploration that interest you. Find out the qualifications, education, and preparation required and discuss the major responsibilities of those positions. Weather : pm Check sign-up page on Event Website for prerequisites.

REI Booth and Class REI will be exhibiting at the Camporee between p.m. and p.m., and will offer a class on Winter Camping at p.m. Please visit the REI booth Saturday afternoon. Webelos Visits to Troops Please be prepared to have at least some of your scouts welcome Webelos and their leaders to your campsite Saturday evening from : p.m. until p.m. Many Troops have historically welcomed Webelos with dessert or a short, fun game. Please note it will be dark at roughly : p.m. that evening. Campfire We will assemble for a joint Camporee/Webelos-Ree Campfire at p.m. Saturday evening. All are encouraged to participate in the Campfire by performing a skit or song. All skits or songs must be pre-approved by the Campfire Master of Ceremonies before :00 p.m. Saturday. The Campfire Master of Ceremonies will be available after the Airshow and for the duration of the afternoon for consultation. As previously noted, may choose to be judged for the Best Skit or Best Song contest and accumulate frequent flier miles toward the Powhatan Cup competition. Alternatively, Troops may also elect to perform a skit or a song outside the competition. Site Camping Rules We will be guests of The Flying Circus, and as all good guests do, we should follow all posted rules and regulations as well as guidance offered by the Camporee Co-Chairs. Pertinent rules include: Campsite Access & Amenities Camporee campsites will be located north of the main entrance road (Webelos-Ree campsites will be on the south side of the road). Troops may enter the campsite area using vehicles for drop-off and loading only. Trailers may be left in the campsite area. Campsites will be grassy and could include some low spots. Campsites will be assigned to Troops at check-in. Fires Hangar and Building Access Important: Campsites will not include any picnic tables or fire pits. Cooking may be done via gas or fire pits at least four inches off the ground. No in-ground fires are permitted in the campsite area. Troops should plan accordingly. The Flying Circus prohibits fires in the camping area. A joint Camporee-Webelos-Ree Campfire is scheduled for Saturday evening. Participants are not allowed in aircraft hangars unless authorized by Flying Circus personnel. Page of

Restrooms Water Trash Other Rules Participants may use the Flying Circus restrooms (men s and women s) located near the airshow seating area. Participants may also use the port-a-johns located near camping area. No dishwashing is allowed in the restrooms. Drinking water is available at several spigots at the Flying Circus site: North side of road near ticket booth Snack bar Restrooms Trash should be bagged and deposited in (not around, or on top of) the Flying Circus dumpster located near the campfire area. Participants should refrain from depositing bags of trash in the Flying Circus public trash cans, as staff will need to quickly prepare the grounds for a public airshow shortly after our departure Sunday morning. Typical BSA rules apply to the Camporee, including: ) Adult leaders and youth leadership will be responsible for the behavior of their Troop. ) No alcoholic beverages are permitted. ) No firearms, BB guns, slingshots, or bows and arrows are permitted. ) No fireworks are permitted. First Aid and Emergencies Troops should bring a BSA Medical Form (Parts A and B) for all participants; Troops will maintain possession of these forms throughout the event. Powhatan District Health and Safety volunteers will staff a First Aid station at the Pavilion. Participants requiring first aid should report to the First Aid station with their medical form in hand (Webelos should be accompanied by an adult). In emergency situations, an adult participant should call immediately and send a runner to the First Aid station to notify the Health and Safety team. If the Health and Safety team determines that additional medical treatment or assessment is required, they may call. The nearest hospital is Fauquier Hospital, 00 Hospital Dr Warrenton, VA. Their phone number is 0--000. This hospital provides -hour Emergency Care including advanced life support. Check-In and Check-Out Troops may arrive after p.m. on Friday evening, September. One adult leader should report to the Pavilion for registration, Check-In, and campsite assignment. On Sunday, Troops should send a single adult leader to the Pavilion for Check-Out. Camporee patches will be distributed at Check-In. Detailed Schedule There may be small changes to the following schedule. A final schedule will be available at Check-In.
