February 2010 Volume 17 Issue 2 Page 5 Editor s Page THE ANSWER TO JANUARY S NAME THAT PLANE The name of the plane is the Avro 504. Larry Bochenko was the first to answer it correctly and will receive a free raffle ticket at this month s meeting. Bob Wisinski was the only other person to answer it correctly. During WWI a total production of 8,970 of these bi-planes was produced. More than any other kind that served in World War I, in any military capacity, during that conflict. Over 10,000 would be built from 1913 to the time production ended in 1932. It was the first airplane to strafe troops on the ground as well as the first to make a bombing raid over Germany. It was also the first Allied airplane to be downed by enemy anti-aircraft fire. See picture below. FEBRUARY S NAME THAT PLANE This aircraft entered service in the USSR in 1935, the fighter being powered by a reverse-engineered Wright Cyclone. It was the world s first cantilever low wing monoplane and retractable undercarriage fighter to enter frontline service. It also had a tail skid and open cockpit. Send all responses to Bradford Walters at Bradford@thehoverzone.com. AVIATION MOVIE TRIVIA Rich Frost has submitted some Aviation Movie Trivia questions. Here is the one for this month. The hint is The Ruptured Duck and the movie is.? The January answer is: General Frank Savage and the movie is Twelve O Clock High. Pete Sidor again had the correct answer. Send all responses to Bradford Walters at Bradford@thehoverzone.com.
