Utrecht Capital city of the province of Utrecht 347,000 With the youngest population of any Dutch city, Utrecht provides a vibrant, creative, and inspiring environment. Utrecht is both the fastest growing and most healthy city in the Netherlands. On top of that, Utrecht is considered one of the happiest cities in the world, according to the United Nations. Utrecht can rightfully be called a central meeting point. The city is located at the intersection of the most important highways of the Netherlands. Schiphol International Airport is within easy reach, just 30 minutes away. The largest railway station of the Netherlands connects Utrecht with many national and international destinations. Given that Utrecht has the highest percentage of population enrolled in higher education and an increasing number of internationals calling Utrecht home, Utrecht has a welcoming character. With many squares, restaurants of all kinds, cinemas and theatres, the city of Utrecht has much to offer.

Leidsche Rijn Utrecht West Utrecht Northeast Utrecht East City of Utrecht and its neighbourhoods Neighbourhoods: City Centre Utrecht s city centre combines narrow streets, canals and storied buildings full of character with a minimum of automotive traffic. The city centre has many advantages, being located within minutes walk of Utrecht central station and offering an increasingly diverse range of restaurants and leisure activities. Utrecht-Northeast (Vogelenbuurt, Tuindorp, Wittevrouwen) The northeast is centred around Griftpark. The area has a mix of houses both more than a century old and newer, creatively designed houses. What makes this area so unique is that despite its high density of housing, there is still a lot of green space within the streets.

Utrecht-East (Wilhelminapark area) The area in Utrecht with the highest standard is the Wilhelminapark area. It s here that you can find a full range of restaurants and cafes and many sizeable houses full of unique character. The area is located right between the city centre and Utrecht Science Park. There is also easy access by car to the ringroad. Utrecht-West (Oog in Al, Lombok) Leidsche Rijn (Leidsche Rijn Centre) A new neighbourhood on the west side of Utrecht is Leidsche Rijn. Given its development started just a few years ago, it is very suitable for families. Prices are relatively low and properties are relatively large here. Recently, the Leidsche Rijn Centre, with amenities such as a cinema, restaurants, bars and a wide range of stores opened. With its own train station there is a perfect connection to Utrecht central station. A relatively affordable area is Lombok, a multicultural neighbourhood close to the city centre and the ringroad. Neighbouring Oog in Al is relaxed in character and also quite lively, due to places like SOIA, an urban beach which hosts many festivals.

Veenendaal 65,000 The Veenendaal municipality lies between the major cities of Utrecht and Arnhem and is located at the edge of the extensive forests of the Utrechtse Heuvelrug. Veenendaal (veen=peat) has its name because of its peat soil. In the 16th century a lot of peat was taken from the ground as it was the most important fuel at the time. To house the workers, Veenendaal was established. The city has a wide range of shopping and leisure possibilities, which leads to the city being a hub for people from all over the region. The best way to define Veenendaal is a combination of a thriving city with both modern houses and ones dating back to the 1930s, combined with lots of forests, moorland and meadows. Highways A12 and A30 and frequent trains will get you easily to major cities like Utrecht, Amersfoort and Arnhem.

Stichtse Vecht (Breukelen, Maarssen & Loenen) 65,000 The Stichtse Vecht municipality lies between the cities of Amsterdam and Utrecht. Due to its green character, picturesque villages and many monumental buildings dating from the 17th and 18th century along the river Vecht, the municipality is nicknamed Pearl at the Vecht. The cities of Amsterdam and Utrecht are connected in several ways. The Amsterdam Rijnkanaal connects them through water, the highway A2 by road and the railway by train. All of them pass through Stichtse Vecht, which makes the municipality perfectly accessible. During rush hour there is even a direct connection between Maarssen and the Uithof, where both Utrecht University and the Utrecht Science Park are located. Within the municipality one can find copious lakes, two castles and the prestigious Nyenrode Business University. There are also many amenities in Stichtse Vecht, including three Michelin-star restaurants.

Zeist 63,000 Zeist s place in the Utrecht Region is the woody area of Utrechtse Heuvelrug. It is located near the motorways A12 and A28 and railway station Driebergen- Zeist offering a direct connection with Utrecht Central Station and Amsterdam Zuid. Characteristic of the Zeist municipality is the predominately green character including lakes, canals and other waters, both in the village and outside. Another attractive feature is the combination of village character with urban amenities of a chic allure. The municipality has a wide variety of shops, a theatre, a cinema, a hospital, hotels, restaurants and various sports clubs for young and old. By the end of the 17th century Willem Adriaan van Nassau-Odijk built the Slot Zeist castle. It is determinative for the structure of Zeist with its gardens and at the time wide ranging view.

Woerden 52,000 Woerden is the capital of the Green Heart of Holland. The beating heart, where city and country meet one another. Where cows graze and cheese is made. A city where a unique and open country coincides with a contemporary and historic city centre. Woerden is well located between the major cities in the western part of the Netherlands: Amsterdam, Rotterdam, The Hague and Utrecht. Both via road and rail these cities can be reached within 30 45 minutes. Woerden is an ages old city that has its roots in Roman times. The area still holds castles from centuries ago and the city of Woerden still has an ancient ring canal surrounding the city centre. Woerden also offers a wide variety of shops, restaurants, sports clubs and cultural activities such as the Stedehuys museum, a music / dance / theater centre, as well as a cinema.

Amersfoort 155,000 Situated in the geographical centre of the Netherlands, Amersfoort offers easy and fast access to Amsterdam (35 minutes), Utrecht (15 minutes), and The Hague (60 minutes). Founded more than 800 years ago, Amersfoort is now a modern and liveable city around a beautiful historic city centre. Already 15 years ago the city developed the first housing quarter with solar energy on every house, and now has 98% fibre optic coverage to every home. Amersfoort has also been awarded for three consecutive years as best Dutch large city to live and work in. The population in Amersfoort is a good mix of singles, couples and families with kids. At 44%, Amersfoort has the second largest percentage of people holding higher education degrees of any city in the Netherlands. The centre is a great place for shopping, dining, and entertainment. There are free concerts, performances and outdoor events taking place throughout the city.

Neighbourhoods: Amersfoort Vathorst Vathorst is the most recently developed district of Amersfoort. With around 9.000 houses and 25.000 inhabitants, the neighbourhood has by far the largest percentage of young families in Amersfoort. Vathorst is at the crossing of the two major highways and has its own train station, connecting it with Amsterdam. The area has its own shopping facilities, sporting grounds, dining and schools. Amersfoort Kattenbroek Development of Kattenbroek with its great architectural diversity finished around 15 years ago. The neighbourhood is closely located to the city centre, and offers daily shopping options. It has 4.600 houses and around 12.000 inhabitants. Amersfoort Bergkwartier / Leusderkwartier This neighbourhood was developed in the early 1900s. Housing ranges from large mansions to connected houses. The area is green, with large trees, wide streets, 7.000 houses and 14.000 inhabitants. The city centre and Amersfoort central station are less than 5 minutes by bike or bus.

De Bilt 43,000 Nature, diversity and innovation; De Bilt is located very close to the city centre of Utrecht and the Utrecht Science Park, yet here you will find nature and peace. De Bilt itself offers a great variety of shops, restaurants, bars, hotels, supermarkets, schools and other facilities such as a swimming pool, library, golf course and sport facilities. De Bilt is perfect for recreation as it is very green, full of forests, parks, swamps and meadows. The forests attract nearly 220.000 visitors each year. De Bilt often gets into the top 25 of best living municipalities in the Netherlands. The houses are relatively large and usually have lots of space. De Bilt s location is very accessible, highway A27 and A28 are nearby, taking you quickly to cities like Hilversum and Amersfoort. Many public transport possibilities will take you to Utrecht very quickly, both by bus and train.

Bunnik 15,000 Just outside the city of Utrecht lies the beautiful town of Bunnik, whose history goes back 2.000 years. From Bunnik you can quickly cycle to Utrecht city with all its cultural offerings. Bunnik is also directly opposite the Utrecht Science Park (USP), where research centres, knowledge institutions and companies are looking for solutions for a longer and healthier life. In this lively area you will find space, tranquility and lots of greenery. The landscape in the surrounding area offers a variety of opportunities for hiking, cycling, kayaking and horse riding. You will also find beautiful country estates, castles and the two largest forts of the Dutch waterline (www.nieuwehollandsewaterlinie.nl). Bunnik has been named the best residential municipality of the province of Utrecht year after year and the municipality is almost always in the top 10 of the Netherlands.

Abcoude 8,000 Abcoude is located just outside Amsterdam, in the middle of the characteristic Dutch green polder landscape. It is a charming village with many beautiful authentic residential houses and buildings. Many houses in Abcoude have a large garden and you will also find a lot of green in the area. Abcoude offers a range of shops, sports clubs, restaurants and cafes and in sunny weather, the terraces are well-stocked. Every year the Abcouder Feestweek takes place with the famous horse market and funfair. From Abcoude you can reach Amsterdam by car or train in 10 minutes and Utrecht in 30 minutes. Around Abcoude there are numerous recreational opportunities at lakes like the Vinkeveense Plassen and Abcoudermeer and at the rivers, allowing you to sail through the Amstel to Amsterdam. Directly from Abcoude, there is also an attractive network of hiking and cycling trails.

Nieuwegein 62,000 Nieuwegein is both close to the city of Utrecht and the countryside, offering affordable housing in an economically strong area. The municipality came into its own from the 1970s forward, as it rapidly began to develop to meet the increasing demand for family housing near Utrecht. Because of this, Nieuwegein is at its core a very young and thriving city. There are numerous leisure options available, like relaxing at the river Lek, going surfing, strolling through Park Oudegein, or visiting the city theatre. There are also many neighbourhood shopping centres so there is always an opportunity for shopping nearby. Nieuwegein is located between three highways, the A2, the A12 and the A27, which makes it perfectly connected to cities like Utrecht and Amsterdam. It takes just 15 minutes to get to Utrecht city centre by tram, to be able to benefit from all Utrecht centre s amenities.
