LEWIS SCHOOL OF ENGLISH Your Guide to Trips Year-Round Junior Groups - Southampton

Trips at the Lewis School of English We believe learning should not be confined to the classroom! That s why our trips, as well as being fun-filled, offer opportunities for you to practise your English and learn about British culture. Linking Learning with Leisure Each trip has a learning theme that is explored during English lessons and then reinforced during the trip. In this way, you will be prepared with the knowledge and vocabulary to help you get the most out of your visit, making it a more vivid and memorable experience. On each trip, our Activity Leaders will bring to life the sights of the city with interesting stories and facts, as you discover British culture and attractions first-hand. Our trips are interactive, too! You will have a specially designed multiple-choice quiz for each trip, so you can practice your English and record what you have learned. Safety and Welfare Your safety and well-being are our top priorities. On all trips, you will be accompanied by our Activity Leaders at a ratio of 1:20. All our leaders are trained in welfare and safety issues and many have qualifications in first aid. You will be supervised at all times. We also provide you with a map for each trip and there is a 24-hour telephone number that you can call if you are lost or in difficulty.

4 Full-Day Trips London Trip London is one of the world s great cities some say the greatest! It was the Romans who first built the square mile now known as the City of London, which is the financial centre. Now 2,000 years later, it is the biggest city in Western Europe and has an economy that is larger than that of many countries. London is famous for its architecture, with some parts - like the Tower of London - dating back to the time of William the Conqueror, while others, like the Shard, have only recently been completed. London has been badly damaged several times, notably in 1666 when much was destroyed in the Great Fire, and then in WWII when bombs flattened many buildings. The streets of London are a living museum and are best seen on foot. Some of London s most famous attractions include Buckingham Palace (the Queen s official home), the London Eye, the Houses of Parliament and Big Ben. And of course, shopping! Central London is a shopper s paradise, and the city has every kind of shop imaginable if you know where to look! Photo opportunities are everywhere - famous buildings, London taxis, double decker buses, the Queen s guards and the many colourful street performers. Have a great time in the capital! Your Trip with Lewis Travel Information Full-day trip Distance: 130km A Typical Trip Includes Walking tour, to see: Big Ben Houses of Parliament Westmister Abbey Horse Guards Parade St James s Park Buckingham Palace Trafalgar Square Covent Garden Free time for shopping Learning Theme London s attractions Find out about the famous sights of the capital!

Full-Day Trips 5 Oxford Trip The University of Oxford is the oldest university in the Englishspeaking world. It is thought that it began in the 12th century and by the middle of the 13th century, there was an established University in Oxford. At this time, most students stayed with their masters in private houses. The first college was Merton in 1264. Today there are more than 35 colleges, which are responsible for the admission of students, their welfare and education. Many of the colleges are open to the public. Oxford has educated 26 British Prime Ministers, including David Cameron, and the former US President, Bill Clinton. Other famous people who studied at Oxford include actors Hugh Grant and Rowan Atkinson (Mr Bean), scientist Stephen Hawking and writers Oscar Wilde, J.R.R. Tolkien, who wrote Lord of the Rings, and Lewis Carroll, who is famous for Alice in Wonderland. Fans of Harry Potter will love Oxford, as two of its colleges - Christ Church College and New College - and the famous Bodleian Library were used as locations in the films. Oxford University and Cambridge University have a long history of competition with each other, both academically and in sport. At the river, you may see students practising their rowing in preparation for the famous Boat Race every spring. 6 Full-Day Trips Bath Trip The beautiful and compact city of Bath is set among the rolling hills of the Avon Valley, and wherever you walk you can enjoy views of the surrounding countryside. Bath is named after the Roman Baths, which are located in the heart of the city next to the medieval abbey. The Romans built the baths in AD43 around the main hot spring and used the waters for cleansing, healing and worship. Most of the stunning architecture in Bath comes from the Georgian period of the 18th and early 19th centuries. One of Bath s most famous residents in this period was Jane Austen, who wrote many famous novels such as Pride and Prejudice - you may have seen the film! Although small, the city is full of life and culture. Street musicians play in the abbey square, boat trips take visitors along the river, and tourists can enjoy the excellent shops, museums and restaurants, or relax in the beautiful parks. It s easy to see why Bath is one of Britain s best-loved cities and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This famous island is known for its beautiful beaches and wildlife, for its dinosaur fossils, and for its annual rock festival (in 1970, it was the largest rock music event ever held). If you like sailing, you may also have heard of Cowes Week, the world s biggest yachting event, which takes place every August. On our trip, we take you to the island s most famous landmark - the Needles. This is a line of three chalk rocks sticking out into the sea. Next to this is the beach at Alum Bay, which is well-known for its multicoloured sand cliffs. A glass object filled with coloured sand is a popular souvenir, and for a small fee you can fill your own at the nearby Sand Shop. There are various amusements and souvenir shops to explore (the sweet shop is a favourite!) and you ll also have the chance to see a glass-blowing demonstration. It was issued in 1215 and was an agreement between King John and his barons, limiting the powers of the King. 2015 marks the 800th anniversary of the Magna and there is a special exhibition inside Salisbury Cathderal. The Cathedral Close and the Market Square are among the best known parts of Salisbury, but all through the city centre you will find attractive buildings from medieval times and the Tudor period.
