MGU UC Pre-Departure Information Handout (Spring Semester 2017) The MGU Exchange Program provides an opportunity for English-speaking students from our exchange partners to pursue undergraduate studies for a semester or academic year at our Yokohama campus. The aim of this program is to provide a creative academic environment for studies pertaining to Japan and the Japanese language for international students. Visa Application Exchange students must apply for their student visa at a given Japanese Embassy/Consulate. You will be requested to submit the enclosed Certificate of Eligibility and your Letter of Acceptance when applying. Please consult your local Japanese Embassy/Consulate for further details regarding the application process. Please confirm the following designated move-in dates and hours. Move-in date: Mar. 29 or Mar. 30, 2017 Move-in hours: Mar. 29 10:00am -8:00pm Mar. 30 10:00am -2:00pm All incoming students should arrive within the move-in hours on either move-in date. Please note that check-in is only available from 10:00am to 8:00pm on the 29th or 10:00am to 2:00pm on the 30th..Transportation from Narita Airport to Totsuka Station will usually take approx. 2 hours, whereas that from Haneda Airport to Totsuka Station will take up to 1 hour. Check-in prior to the designated move-in dates/time is not available. Students who arrive into Japan before Mar 29 must therefore arrange for their own accommodation until the move-in period. The Haneda Airport International Passenger Terminal connects directly to the underground Haneda Airport International Terminal Station on the Keikyu Line. Press the "Select language" button(a) 2. Select your language. 3. Press the "Ticket" button. 4. Buy a connecting ticket to JR Totsuka Station via Yokohama Station in order to make it simple and easy transfer at Yokohama. The fare from Airport to Yokohama is 450yen. In addition to the fare of 220yen from Yokohama to Totsuka, total fare from Airport to Totsuka will be 670yen. Select Connecting Ticket and buy a 220yen JR ticket to Totsuka transferring at Yokohama. Total fare from Airport to Totsuka should be 670yen including the 450yen ticket from Airport to Yokohama. If you are not sure how to do it, ask Keikyu station staff. 5. Insert money. 6. Receive your ticket and change.
How to Access MISH from Totsuka Station 8 7 6 5 4 3 2 1 JR Totsuka St. (west exit) 1 Take the stairs up from the platform to the second floor exit gate Totsuka Station. Go out the ticket gate and turn left. You will find Totsukana.(2) 2 Head toward Totsukana. Using the ramp on the right side will make it easier for you to roll your luggage. 3 Go straight through Totsukana until you find automatic doors at the end. 6 Go down the ramp on the left side of the Saclass entrance. 5 Walk on the pedestrian deck towards the Saclass building. 4 Through the automatic doors. Mark: T-Berry Store on the right side
MISH 7 Go straight and pass by a Lawson store on your right. 8 Turn right just after you see a Bento store on your right. MARK: Sign with pink color 9 MISH is located just around the tight corner. Dormitory Details The University maintains a co-ed dorm MISH (Meiji Gakuin International Student House) located 10 minutes away from JR Totsuka Station. The trip to the University from the dorm takes approx. 30 minutes on foot. The University reserves the right to assign rooms to the incoming students. We cannot accept preferences on which room you would like to stay in. Students will be notified of their room allocation upon arrival. The rooms are single occupancy rooms. Living in the dorm is a pre-condition towards acceptance to the MGU Exchange Program. Arrangement of private accommodation, unless under extraordinary circumstances which do not allow for the student to live in the dorm, is not allowed. Room Rent Incoming students are requested to pay rent on a per semester basis, prior to the start of each semester. Payment for the initial semester should be made via international bank transfer according to the details provided on the invoice sent out along with the Letter of Acceptance. The amount to be paid varies according to the duration of the student s studies at MGU. This rent is non-refundable unless under extraordinary circumstances such as sickness to the student or the student s family member which require him/her to return to his/her home country. All incoming students must also pay a dorm deposit fee of 25,000 along with their rent, to be returned in cash at the end of their studies. Please note that this deposit applies to all students regardless of their status at MGU (this includes Fee-paying students and JASSO Scholarship students).
Costs incurred for cleaning/repairs stemming from negligent use (those above normal wear and tear ) will be subtracted from the deposit. The student is also responsible for all costs which exceed this deposit amount. Payment is required upon all students regardless of their status (fee-paying or those exempt from having to pay dorm fees). Gas, water, electricity and Internet access fees are included in the rent. However, should management monitor excessive use, the student may be requested to settle excessive fees at his/her own cost. Rent for students staying for ONE SEMESTER ONLY: 240,000 for March 29, 2017 to August 1, 2017 (Due date: March 23, 2017) Dormitory Furnishing & Appliances The University provides basic furnishing, including bed linen, in the dormitories. Each room also comes equipped with an air-conditioner, internet access point, a shower, a bathroom and a kitchen. Laundry facilities are located on the 1st floor for common use. Students are responsible for cleaning and upkeep of their individual and common spaces. Banking and Money Apart from MISH rent and deposit amount listed above, students should bring a minimum of 50,000 in cash or traveler s check to survive the initial settling-in period. During orientations, International Center will provide assistance in opening bank account of Sumitomo Mitsui Bank. People who have an American nationality are required to inform their social security number when opening bank account. Please get the information prior to arrival. In japan, it is common to use personal seal (called Inkan or Hanko ) instead of signature. Please prepare your Personal Seal before this orientation. It may take up to a week for wired funds to reach a students Japanese bank account. Students and their guardians should note that a handling fee will be charged to all wire transfers. Most convenience stores such as 7-Eleven or Lawson have international ATM machines in them because this is uncommon in America and the students will be looking for banks. Mobile Phones Students are recommended to open a mobile phone account upon arrival. As with the bank accounts, exchange students can arrange a mobile phone/wi-fi router/sim Card during the orientation. Please refer to the details in the enclosed document. Exchange students can contract other plans on their own. Arrangement of monthly payment and account cancellation prior to departure remains to be the sole responsibility of the students. The University holds no right or responsibility to settle unattended issues regarding mobile phones on behalf of the student.
