6 Geographical information Cancún is located in the Yucatan Peninsula, bordering the Caribbean Sea, in the state of Quintana Roo. Cancún is part of the territory of the ancient Mayan civilization and is still considered the entrance to the Mayan World. Cancún is known for its beaches and for its infrastructure, modern entertainment centers and service philosophy, which rival other popular destinations around the world. Climate Cancún enjoys a subhumid tropical climate, influenced by local factors like the constant sea breeze and high atmospheric humidity, due to its adjacency with the Caribbean Sea, the low elevation above sea level and the absence of orographic prominences, which could stop the humid air currents. The average annual temperature oscillates around 27 C / 80.6 F and the extreme average temperatures are 19 C/66.2 F (minimum) and 35.2 C/95.36 F (maximum). The rainy season lasts from July to November.
