Of all e inhabited Croatian islands, it is e farest from e coast, and is part of e Central Dalmatian group of islands, wi an area of 90.26 km². The highest peak of Vis is called Hum, 587 m high. There are two towns and municipalities on e island, Vis and Komiža bo located on e seacoast. Vis became of interest to ancient historical sources in 4 century BC when e tyrant of e Greek town Syracuse, Dionysus e Elder, in his propensity to become e most powerful ruler of Mediterranean, founded his own colony - Issa on e site of present day Vis. Issa soon became an independent town-state (polis) and coined its own money. Its citizens traded roughout e Mediterranean and e town soon began founding its own colonies. Issa became especially famous in e ancient world anks to e excellence of its wines. The turbulent history of Vis has culminated after e First World War. It was under Italian rule for a short period, and later under e Kingdom of Yugoslavia. In 1943 e entire island came under e rule of Yugoslav Partisans. Vis became e centre in which e foundations of e new Yugoslavian state under communist rule were set up. Wi an aerodrome, Vis was a base for commanders and e Yugoslavian fleet who attacked e rest of e eastern Adriatic coast at was occupied by Germans from here. In e beginning of e Patriotic war in Croatia Vis was one of e strongholds of e Yugoslav Army. Alough ere were no significant conflicts, e Croatian Navy was ready to win Vis at e end of 1991.The attack was dropped because e agreement on termination of combat activities was concluded. After e independence was declared on 25 June 1991, followed by a gradual international recognition of Croatia, Yugoslavian Army had no choice but to leave Vis. This situation opened e town of Vis and e whole island, as part of e new independent state, offering it new development prospects. The role of military base slowed e development of tourism on e island down, but also protected e island from e uncontrolled construction of tourist facilities at is characteristic of a sudden development of tourism. In spite of numerous attractions e island has to offer, one of e reasons for Vis' uniqueness lies in its 500 years of isolation where time had stopped. The island itself and inhabitants are hospitable in eir unique way at makes every visitor experience e simple life.
