Enjoy first class hotels, outstanding cuisine and an insight into the culture and psyche of the Japanese people. Tour Highlights: Visit a Kobe beef farm to see how this delicacy is produced. Japan Country Information The Country Japan is an island nation in the Pacific Ocean with dense cities, imperial palaces, mountainous national parks and thousands of shrines and temples. Shinkansen bullet trains connect the main islands of Kyushu (with Okinawa's subtropical beaches), Honshu (home to Tokyo and Hiroshima s atomicbomb memorial) and Hokkaido (famous for skiing). Tokyo, the capital, is known for skyscrapers, shopping and pop culture. The Agriculture Japan has a severe shortage of agricultural land. The Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Ministry believe the country needs 4.61 million hectares of cultivated farmland to achieve a food self-sufficiency rate of 50 percent. The self-sufficiency rate currently stands at 39 percent. Although farming and other primary industries, like mining, make up just 1.5 percent of gross domestic output, outdated election maps and effective organisation by farmers give Japan's rural communities disproportionate political power. Land reform after World War II took land from powerful landowners and distributed it among ordinary farmers. The move helped make Japan a more equitable society but it also made agriculture much less efficient. Currently, the nation's gross agricultural production totals about $100 billion, a decline of 30 percent from its peak. Agricultural output nearly halved from a peak of 7.84 trillion in 1992 to 4.81 billion in 2005. The only food items that Japan produces in sufficient quantities domestically are rice, eggs and things like onions and cucumbers. Japan relies on imports for most of the wheat and soybeans it consumes. The Weather The weather in Japan is generally temperate, with four distinct seasons: Japan's weather in Winter, from December to February, is quite dry and sunny along the Pacific coast and the temperatures rarely drop below 0 C. The temperatures drop as you move north, with the Central and Northern regions experiencing snowfall. The People The population peaked in December 2004 at 127.838 million. In 2005, the Japanese population dropped for the first time with the number of deaths exceeding the number births. A census taken in October 2005 found the population totalled 127.75 million down 19,000 from the previous year. Japan's population declined for a second straight year in 2006. It by 51,000 in 2008 and 18,516 in 2007. Time Japan is UK time +8 hours Web reference: www.factsanddetails.com
