OCTOBER 2018 Commander s Message October is here, best boating and weather at the lake. It all starts to slow down, put the garden to bed, fall clean-up is near, sweet smell of burning leaves, probably my favorite time of year. September started slow but roared in the middle. First the Fashion Show, huge success, the ladies outdid themselves yet again. Lot of hard work but the decorations, the food, they have a challenge ahead to top this one, congratulations to all. Next, Bike Fest, the Riders with help from the SAL and the Auxiliary went over the top. Over 200 guests at the post for the first time, many compliments from them, 70 bikes in the parade, sold out the gun raffle and had about a dozen left on the Vegas trip. Big thanks also to the crew that put out the Avenue of Flags and the Sons for adding the Pledge of Allegiance, it was beautiful and moving to those of us who believe in those things. October brings the Turkey Shoot on 10/6 and the Veterans Picnic out back starting at noon for all who served in the area sponsored by The Legion, Riders, SAL and the Auxiliary. The Picnic is a new event and we are hoping to have a nice turnout That is it for Post activities so far, keep an eye on your email for what might come up. See you at Show Me the Money on Thursday and Turkey shoot on Saturday and enjoy the best time of the year at the Lake. God Bless America Thank you to our Bar Committee for taking over and keeping things running while I am recuperating. For those who do not realize it, it is more than just counting money. The bar committee is responsible for making sure the bar tenders have the correct amount of money for the daily operation of the bar which includes money for Scratchers and Lotto. They are also responsible for making deposits, making computer entries for paying all bills, entering time cards in to the computer for payroll, etc. Thank you again to Mark, Bob, Pat, Jim and Dick. I hope to return soon. Gary Mock Bar Chairman BAR COMMITTEE
The Fashion Show was a great success. The tally isn t in yet, it s too soon for now but Sheila Marlow and Betty Hovey organized this and together their efforts really shined at the fashion show. The Vendors stated they did very well in the few hours that they were selling and some stated an interest to come back next year. We had two male modes this year and they looked fabulous in their designer suits, but I m prejudice towards well dressed men. The District President and some of her board were there, they want to try a fashion show of their own as a fund raiser in Jeff City, they are so impressed with ours. To both Sheila, Betty and all of your committee members, Good job ladies! The Kitchen Committee, run by Susann Huff, has really taken off. They performed an annual cleaning last month and identified some much needed equipment replacements. We are working on those. The committee reminded us that the best time to replace some of the things identified would be during the upcoming holiday sales coming holidays. We ll be watching and replacing as these items come up in a sale. We replaced one of our steam warmers, with 2 shorter ones and some cooking utensils. We are creating a wish list by order of the most needed. The Ladies of the Auxiliary go a few times a month to do nails and play bingo at the Laurie Nursing Home during daylight hours. They Could really use extra help. For nails please call Sandi Klobe, (417) 664-2167; and for bingo please call Shirley (573) 374-1912. SAL September was a busy month for all at the legion, we worked as a team esp on the 14th when 3 entities served 3 meals and no one got in the way of the next group of workers. Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner Served as well as a silent auction and passport stop for Bike Fest. The drive to post lined with flags and signs. The riders organized a ride from Camdenton to Legion to honor veterans ( some of the riders were veterans) and the school let the kids out to line their lot & observe, riders as well as the kids enjoyed that. A very busy but beautiful day. I hesitate to post thanks to Individuals as I am sure I would forget someone who did an outstanding job; so to each that volunteered and worked to represent our post BIKE FEST DAYS accept my personal pat on the back.(even if U can"t feel it). I would however be really amiss if I did not thank Walmart and Woods for their most appreciated donation to our Bike Fest fundraiser. G-2M as usual was a big help with procuring items we needed at a discount as well as tax exempt. New SAL Member Ted York cooked those steaks to perfection, even to order for many. Jeanie's help with salad prep along with Tom Heinz, Jim, Mark, Gary, & Joe, Bill and the ladies desserts made our Steak Night a real treat. It was also a treat to have Karen's help again. Like I keep saying we have a special SAL group, and we welcome new members and suggestions. October will be kicked off on October 6th with a veterans picnic organized by Tom H, here again each entity will help in one way or another. Carolyn and I wish we could be a part of this event, but my mother 's 93rd Birthday is the 6th and a party is planned. I know with all entities working together it will be a good day for those who attend and the kids will enjoy our playground, weather permitting. Wed. Oct 10th. We are serving brats & sour kraut, potato salad, dessert Bob Worthley H 816-850-4935 C 816-304-9132 RIDERS I would really like to thank the Post for letting the riders take over the post on Bike fest weekend. I know we can get in the way but I feel this gives the post good visibility and allows us to off what a great post we have. We had a great showing for our veterans parade with over 70 bikes participating. Our raffles were equally successful. I would also like to thank the Sons and the AUX for cooking meals for us, everyone seemed to enjoy the food. I heard several comments that they really liked our post and the people they met. Tuesday some of the riders from our post are going on an escort to Ava. The Vietnam traveling wall (3/4 size replica of the Vietnam wall in Washington, DC) is going from Lebanon to Ava. The escort should be pretty good size with posts from Jeff City, St Roberts, Springfield, and several others. Looks like the weather will cooperate. Rick Director
