www.natures-images.co.uk Falklands 28th November to 15th December 2018 Photographic tour with tour leader Mark Sisson

Itinerary : Days 1-2 Day 1 Wednesday 28th November We propose to organise our transport to Port Stanley in the Falklands using the MOD service from Brize Norton airfield in Oxfordshire. The 18-hour flights leave in the evening and involve a stop (for re-fuelling and the chance to stretch our legs) at Ascension Island on the way. Although more expensive than the route via Santiago this is a much quicker route that runs more than the one day a week the alternative offers hence our choice of this as our way there and back: we will talk about the process for booking these flights with you once you have a confirmed place on the trip with us. Day 2 Thursday 29th November After our long flight we will arrive at Mount Pleasant airfield and transfer to our hotel on the outskirts of Port Stanley where we will settle in, acclimatise, enjoy an evening meal hopefully stretch our legs and camera fingers on the nearby shore and get ready for our first early start the next morning! Page 1

Itinerary : Days 3-7 Day 3 Friday 30th November We will transfer today to Carcass Island in the west of the Falklands which will be our base for the next 5 nights, which will be Carcass Island. Carcass is a small peaceful island that holds a very large and wide variety of bird species which are all highly approachable and confiding. We will make our transfer using the Falkland Islands Government Air Service (FIGAS) and with precise timings only advised the day before we will use the rest of the day to settle into our new base and begin photographing as this allows. Days 4-7 Saturday 1st to Tuesday 4th December Carcass Island s main attractions are the large numbers of Gentoo and Magellenic Penguins in a variety of settings including sandy beaches, coves and surfing in blue seas. There are also good numbers of Striated Caracara (known locally as the Johnny Rook), which can be very bold offering good photographic opportunities. Carcass is also the base from which, when precisely will be dependant on the weather, we will undertake a 2-day trip (with overnight stop) to the famous Steeple Jason Island. This should be a real highlight of the trip as it is home to the largest Black Browed Albatross colony in the world (estimated at more than 200,000 pairs and stretching over 2 miles making it the largest colony in the world) and we will enjoy our 2 days here photographing these magnificent birds soaring across the ocean, sitting on their tall chimney like nests where there may be the chance to see newly hatched birds being fed by their parents. Steeple Jason also offers our first chance to Page 2

Itinerary : Days 8-11 work with Rockhopper Penguins as well as more Gentoos and Magellenics in a different rocky setting: it will be an amazing two days. During our time based here at Carcass we also have scheduled a one day excursion to West Point Island to visit a second Black Browed Albatross colony in a generally more vegetated setting and the chance to add some real breadth to our portfolio of these beautiful birds. With waders, geese, cormorants, larks and ducks all around as well on Carcass itself as well we will never be short of photographic opportunities here. Day 8 Wednesday 5th December We will make our transfer, again using FIGAS, to Sea Lion Island to the south of East Falkland where we will be based for the next 4 nights. Again flight timings will be finalised the day before but there will be time for some morning and evening photography based on how that develops for us. Days 9-11 Thursday 6th to Saturday 8th December Our three full day s photography at Sea Lion Island will offer lots of new opportunities within walking distance of our very comfortable lodge. Elephant Seals colonise the beaches and we are visiting towards the end of the pupping season so we will have young and suckling mothers on the beach as well as the end of season scraps between the males as they look to keep their harems together. It s also the time of year when Orca are regularly seen both offshore and occasionally hunting seal pups in a small pool we will also be able to access: a truly dramatic experience. The beaches here are excellent for photographing the famous surfing Gentoo Penguin as they come ashore after a day s fishing at sea. There is a large Rockhopper colony across the island we will visit and by the time of our visit there should be youngsters to photograph. There are occasionally Macaroni Penguins in amongst the Rockhoppers so hopefully we will get the chance to broaden our coverage, and there are Page 3

Itinerary : Days 12-16 good numbers of Rock Shag and Imperial Shag in the area. With moorland on hand to search for very approachable Snipe, Dotterel and Plovers to add to the mix this will be a very busy 3-day stay. Day 12 Sunday 9th December We will today make the short hop (again by FIGAS) for a one-night stop on nearby Bleaker Island. This is home to a large and very accessible Rockhopper Penguin colony which is likely to be our main focus, although equally large Gentoo penguin and Imperial Shag colonies along with sealions, waders and grebes offer plenty of other options too. Day 13 Monday 10th December Using FIGAS we will transfer back to Port Stanley and the hotel we stayed at when we first arrived for our final 3 nights. Again the advised flight timings will shape our options in the morning and evening photographically. Days 14-16 Tueday 11th to Thursday 13th December Each of these 3 days will involve a long but rewarding day at one of the photographic jewels of the Falklands, Volunteer Point. This is the home of the largest King Penguin colony and there should be over 1000 birds here at all stages from first year young and many adult birds. There is a good chance there will be some adults with Page 4

Itinerary : Days 14-18 eggs too. These birds are remarkably approachable and the photographic opportunities are almost endless at what is one of the most scenic locations in the world that they breed at, and it justifies a full three days here to finish the trip. Sealions fish off the beach and there is also a Gentoo Penguin and Magellenic Penguin colony here. Based on the weather we will look to get to the beach area as early as practical (it is approximately 2 hours each way by land rover) and during the course of the three days everyone will spend one night at the small warden s house on the beach (we will fill it up with just half of us) with the other half returning to Stanley and returning to Volunteer for the next day. This way everyone gets the opportunity of an evening and early morning s photography here. Day 17 Friday 14th December For our final early start we will sadly be heading only to the airport at Mount Pleasant for the long flight back to Brize Norton, again with a short refuelling/leg-stretching stop at Ascension Island. Day 18 Saturday 15th December Arrive back at Brize Norton in UK. Page 5

Additional info Things to bring Our accommodation throughout the trip is clean and comfortable with everything provided, so you simply need to bring yourself, any special dietary requirements you may have please let us know if there s anything you can t/won t eat and rest assured the food here is way above what your expectations might initially be too!!!! In terms of clothing in spite of the fact it is summer here you will need warm and weatherproof clothing: rain is not uncommon but usually does not last long, but the islands here can be persistently very windy at times. Out of the wind though it can be pleasant warm so you need to have flexible options. The following are very much recommended - a good pair of strong waterproof walking boots, good waterproof overtrousers (lined ones are best as they ll keep you warmer especially with a normal pair of trousers). For the top half it s very much a question of having several layers - like a t-shirt, jumper or fleece and then a waterproof coat with a spare jumper or two at hand as well dependent on how the day goes - you ll know your own cold thresholds but it really is a question of build it up in layers. A good hat and fingerless mittens and/or overgloves may also be useful. Camera equipment In terms of camera kit you ll need a tripod, the longest lens you have (300mm or 500mm + convertor would be my recommendation/choice) and then some supplementary lenses for other opportunities such as a 24-70mm for landscapes, I would suggest an intermediate zoom (70-200 or 100-400) so that you don t miss anything in terms of opportunity and you will find yourself using these shorter lenses a larger percentage of the time than you d think. staying at the same hotel at the beginning and end of the trip it will be possible to leave a small bag of dirty and clean flight clothes there while we are travelling around, but you will want to be travelling as light as you possibly can for this trip. This is something we can chat through individually in the build up to the trip and after your booking. Useful contact information: My contact number for the build up to and for the duration of the trip is: Mark: 07905 569685 Please don t hesitate to contact me even if you think it is a minor question, I am here to help. The Falklands is one of the most beautiful and remotest places on earth and with Penguins and Albatrosses amongst the most beautiful birds on the planet to visit and photograph here in the way we are doing will be an amazing adventure, a trip of a lifetime and one we very much looking forward to sharing with you. It is worth noting at this stage that there is a very strict weight allowance on the FIGAS flights and a strict supplement is charged on a per kilo basis over a base allowance of 20 kg. This includes both your camera bag and hold baggage. Given that we are Page 6
