Southern Africa Wildlife Management Association (SAWMA) Symposium 31 August 3 September 2014 Pine Lodge Resort and Conference Centre, Port Elizabeth The Southern African Wildlife Management Association takes pleasure in informing you that our annual symposium; Reconciling the Contradictions of Wildlife Management in Southern Africa, will take place from 31 August 3 September 2014, at the Pine Lodge Resort and Conference Centre in Port Elizabeth. Attending a scientific conference is a costly undertaking. The event was organized with the viewpoint of offering it at the lowest possible registration rates and students in particular are paying a rate that will be much lower than the actual costs. Without sponsorship to partially cover some of the costs of venue hire and catering, the lower fees would not be possible. With the above in mind we, the organisers, would be honoured if you would accept our invitation to be an integral part of the Southern African Wildlife Management Symposium. We will provide opportunities for sponsorship that will enhance your visibility in the scientific and wildlife management community.
Background: Southern African Wildlife Management Association (SAWMA) - Who we are: The Southern African Wildlife Management Association (SAWMA) is an independent, non-profit professional body, founded in 1970. (NPO 077-639) The association s multi-disciplinary membership includes both local and foreign academics, researchers, professionals and practitioners involved with the science and management of wildlife and other renewable natural resources. It includes the various disciplines, such as wildlife research, conservation science, ecology, genetics, animal science etc. The main function of SAWMA is to promote the common interest of our membership by publishing research articles in a scientific journal, South African Journal of Wildlife Research, organizing an annual symposium, and publishing a regular newsletter - thereby keeping our members abreast of the latest research and development and setting a code of ethics and standards for wildlife management and wildlife research. The affairs of the association are run by a council, elected every two years from the SAWMA membership. Currently the association has about 450 members local and abroad. Visit our website for more information: www.sawma.co.za SAWMA Symposium 2014 The main theme for SAWMA symposium 2014 is Reconciling the contradictions of Wildlife Management in southern Africa. The wildlife landscape in southern Africa is characterized by a series of contradictions and these include: burgeoning and declining wildlife populations; sustainable and unsustainable use: a massive wildlife industry and under supported wildlife management research; legal and illegal exploitation; conflicts and coexistence; evidence-based and opinion-based management; supportive and counterproductive policy. These conflicting scenarios and ideas provide a fertile framework for wildlife scientists, managers, policy makers and students to bring their differing view to this forum, and contribute towards a meaningful debate. Participants: SAWMA 2014 provides an important forum for managers, scientists, students and decision-makers in the field of wildlife and natural resource management and research. Our symposium is normally attended by delegates from all over South Africa and also sometimes neighbouring countries and international delegates.
