It is an excellent example of an attractive and comfortable home with impressive features such as the uneven Long Gallery, the lavish decorative framing and fine painted cloths. See the wattle and daub panels, climb the twisty old staircase and marvel at the elaborately carved wooden furniture. A45 COVENTRY ROAD The 250 year old mill at is one of only two surviving watermills in. The cobbled courtyard and mill pool are a tranquil haven away from 21st century life, while the buildings and their impressive machinery give a unique insight into the lives of the millers who once inhabited this rural retreat. The mill was the childhood haunt of the author J.R.R. Tolkien. His family moved to in 1896 and for four years they lived in a house overlooking the mill pond. Tolkien and his brother spent many hours playing around the mill. He used the mill and nearby Moseley Bog as inspiration for The Shire in The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. Beautifully restored, the house reflects the fashions and tastes of the late Georgian period. was a favourite meeting place of the Lunar Society, a leading Enlightenment group. They met every month on the night of the full moon to dine, conduct experiments, and discuss philosophical matters of the day. Erasmus Darwin, James Watt and Joseph Priestley all gathered around the Lunar Room table and engaged in a lively exchange of ideas which inspired many new discoveries and inventions. is an unexpected haven close to the city centre, with a peaceful garden carefully designed using Boulton s original planting lists. The site was once a hunting lodge of the Earls of Dudley and is now a scheduled monument of national importance. has been inhabited since the C12th and the large stone towers and walls were built in the 1270s. Today visitors can enjoy a surprising insight into early history whilst savouring the green and tranquil place that has now become. The in Nechells has brought together 80 per cent of & Art Gallery s stored collections under one roof. The 1.5 hectare site, close to Duddeston Station, holds hundreds of thousands of fascinating objects currently not on display. Guided tours and group visits allow you to see a vast range of objects in a real Aladdin s cave, often with a real focus on and the West Midlands. Among the collections are steam engines, sculptures, machinery, an entire collection of Austin, Rover and MG motor cars - even shoes and a chip fryer!
