May 2017 Warioto Wings Volume 2 Issue 5 P a ge 3 A Word from your Assistant Chapter Director: I've had a hard time writing this article a good friend of my wife s, husband, missed a curve riding Deals Gap and ran into a truck head-on. He is in critical condition with brain swelling and most of the bones from the waist up broken. Yesterday, as I was riding in a very heavy downpour, I was very aware of the risk we expose ourselves to every time we ride. Dave Jones Assistant Chapter Director I am very excited about riding the mountain roads in east Tennessee this weekend during Spring Fling. As you get ready for the riding season this spring, please look at the habits you have developed over the years, and make sure you are riding as safely as possible. I know I get wrapped up with the joy of riding and don't always ride at the safest speeds, especially on roads I have never ridden before. I would hate to be visiting any of my friends or GWRRA members in a hospital. Please take a few minutes before each ride and make sure you have reviewed the route you plan to drive, paying attention to dangerous areas you may be riding thru and make sure you are mentally and physically able to meet the challenges of your planned route. If you re not sure you are up for the ride planned, re-route or don't ride until you are comfortable. Always put safety first!!! See you on the road!!! Remember your ride coordinator needs your help planning rides. Dave Jones could use your ideas as to where to go. Also let him know how you like to ride, ie; what area, how long you like to ride, what day you like to ride, what time of day you like to ride.

May 2017 Wa ri o to Wi n g s V olume 2 I s s u e 5 P a ge 4 Chapter Educator With our love of riding, comes the possibility of injury. I recently read an interesting article in Motorcycle Safety News about how motorcycle safety has evolved. Helmets: Did you know that interest in developing motorcycle helmets began in 1935, but the first patent for a motorcycle helmet did not occur until 1953. The early helmets were made of leather which did not do much for protection. Today, helmets are made of plastic, carbon fiber, or Kevlar, and are designed to be impact resistant. Protective Gear: The right gear is considered one of the most important aspects of motorcycle safety. The earliest motorcycle gear came from motorcycles in World War I, which consisted of short coats, heavy boots, and pegged pants. The most recognizable motorcycle gear is the leather jacket, which is good only for abrasions. Kevlar with some carbon fiber armor or suits with built in airbag systems, or even airbag vests that inflate when the rider exits the bike are some of the more modern protective gear. And don t forget about the visibility in today s riding apparel. Safety Laws: In 1966 the Highway Safety Act required states to have mandatory helmet laws, but Congress withdrew the requirement in 1975. Now mandatory helmet laws vary from State to State. The State of Tennessee requires a helmet. A report published in 1981 showed that most motorcycle accidents occurred as a result of car drivers failing to see motorcycles. Little has changed since then. However, these and similar studies have led to the implementation of motorcycle operator training. Many states require a separate license before you can operate a motorcycle. But, in the end, technology and laws can only go so far in protecting you while riding. Awareness and skill are still needed to stay safe. Mickey Turner, Chapter Educator

May 2017 Warioto Wings Vo lu me 2 Issue 5 Page 10 Here are some things to remember, cut them out and put them on your refrigerator or bulletin board to help you remember. The next big thing to look forward to is the District s Spring Fling. This will be held at the same location as last year in Pigeon Forge. Now is the time to sign up and make a room reservation. There will be a Talent contest on Friday night with cash prizes. The Theme is THE FABULOUS FIFTIES so dig out something from the Fifties and lets have some fun. Dave will set up a ride to get us there and there will be guided rides over the weekend, they promise to ride places you have never been. Your news letter editor could use some pictures. These can be things you ve done with the chapter or things on your own every one loves pictures of your travels or camping trips or just day rides so please help me out. You can e-mail them to me tnchapterq@gmail.com. Watch the new year for some big changes. The staff hopes to make some changes and maybe recruit some new members The third Saturday of each month we are going to try to have a ride planned for the Chapter. This maybe a day long ride or if you want we could do an overnight ride. The main purpose is to get out and ride and enjoy each others company. Another part of this ride will be to invite the non-members to ride with us and show them how we ride and let them know a little about our chapter. So if you have friends that ride invite them to come along, it doesn't matter what they ride just that they ride safe and can enjoy a family orientated organization. Your chapter is still looking for some help. We are in need of a Dinner Ride coordinator. If you are interested in this position please let us know. One of the staff members would like to talk to you about the positions. Remember to bring your suggestions for things to do this year. Your staff would really like to plan the events you would like to attend. If you want a picnic let us know. Do you want more rides and what day and time works best for you?

May 2017 Wa ri o to Wi n g s Vo l ume 2 I ssue 5 Its time to start visiting other chapters Page 11 If you looked at the calendar in this news letter you can see lots of opportunities to go visit other chapters. Jan and I love to go visit and we would like to have some of the chapter come with us. So to that end I have included our tentative visitation ride schedule in the calendar. These are the dates we are going to other chapters. If anyone would like to come with us please call or text or e-mail me and let us know. That way we can set up a ride that will fit your schedule and get us to the chapters on time. If you want to visit a chapter and it is not on our list let us know and we will try to make it work. We travel by car until the weather is good enough to ride then we ride as much as we can. We will also chase the plaques as much as we can so try to plan some rides to help out with that. When we go after the Couple of the Year Plaque it only requires Jan and I and it is given by ticket draw. When we go for the Middle and West TN Plaque it is done the same way there is no minimum number of people from our chapter required and they do a ticket draw. When we go after the TN Traveling Plaque or the Region Wanderer Plaque you must have five members attending and this is given to the highest miles traveled to the Gathering. The miles used are the total miles of all the members that attend the gathering, also if you ride your Motorcycle you get double miles for that rider and co-rider. If you have any questions about the rules please go to the district web site (www.gwrratn.org) and check them out. Let s Go Visiting!
