Piracy on the world s seas has reached a fiveyear low, with 297 ships attacked in 2012, compared with 439 in 2011, the latest International Maritime Bureau s (IMB) report revealed on January 16 Maritime Labor Convention Will Offer Protections to Maritime Workers In 2012, the International Labor Organization, the United Nations group dedicated to advocating for laborers around the world, announced that the Maritime Labor Convention will go into effect in August 2013 after Russia and the Philippines ratified it. Ratification of the convention required signing by at least 30 countries representing 33 percent of world shipping. The United States has not signed the convention. Shipping Industry Bodies Urge Continued Application of Anti-Piracy Measures The International Maritime Organization, the International Chamber of Shipping (ICS), BIMCO, the Oil Companies International Marine Forum (OCIMF), the International Association of Independent Tanker Owners (INTERTANKO), the International Association of Dry Cargo Ship owners (INTERCARGO), the International Parcel Tankers Association (IPTA), and the International Shipping Federation (ISF), welcome the recent decrease in the number of attempted and successful attacks against ships by Somalia-based pirates operating in the Gulf of Aden and the western Indian Ocean.
