Saturday, January 28 th, pilots from around the north state, including several from Redding, flew to Alturas for a FAASTeam program on mountain flying presented by Bill Hill. Assistant airport manager Paula Jessup hosted the group and we had a great time. It was a nice cool winter morning in Redding and in the mid 20 s when we got there. It wasn t as cold as you might think, as the winds were calm and the sun was out. Irwin Fust and I flew up in the Tres Amigos Flying Club s Cherokee. It was a very smooth flight. The only mishap that day was with Dr. David Johnson s plane. The left main tire on his Seneca decided to go south (or was it north) on landing. There was no damage done, but a new tire was needed. A call was made to Rick Ortega in Redding who graciously acquired a tire and flew it up. A & P Eric Sawyer was there and was able to borrow some tools and, with some help, save the day. Now we know the answer to the question: How many pilots does it take to change a tire. The answer is several. This was such a great day in aviation that I think we should do more things like this fly someplace as a group. Irwin is working on getting local pilots to fly down to Camarillo for the AOPA Fly In in late April. Several of us are planning on going. If you want to go, let him know; call 351-8203. It s not that we ll be flying in formation, but if we know who s going, we can all meet up and hang out together. I ve been to a few events in Palm Springs and elsewhere down south. I ve always been surprised that I don t see anybody I know from our area. There are also many closer places we could go, like Chico to visit the air museum, as well as the fly ins at Fall River Mills, Trinity Center, Boonville, etc. Is anybody up for a poker run? Fly to 5 nearby airports, get a 5 card hand, win $100 and come back to Benton for a barbeque. I ve never done one, but if there s enough interest, we ll do it. Just let me know. If you have any other ideas on things we can do to together, let us know. Let s go out and have some fun! Jim Bremer 1

March 7, 2017 EAA Chapter Board Meeting The meeting was called to order at 7:02 PM by Pres. Jim Bremer; Officers present; Vice Pres., Dick Wilkinson; Treasurer, Paul Gilman; Directors present: Barbara Crooker, Julie Ostendorf, Dave Kirkman and Jack Limmer.. Minutes: Minutes of the last Board Meeting were presented and approved.. Treasurer s report: Paul G. presented the Financial Report as of this date of the Board Meeting. Financial Report was approved. Old Business: B-17 Visit. Pres. Jim B. said the B-17 visit is confirmed. The dates are April 20, 21, 22 and 23. Our responsibility will be providing volunteers to guide passengers on and off the plane, provide certain safe guards to keep the public a safe distance the aircraft etc. All volunteers will have a chance to participate in a drawing to get a free ride to the B-17 s next airport showing. Six volunteers will be drawn for that flight. Return transportation is the responsibility of the winners. If you wish to help contact (see side bar above) Pres. Jim Bremer and let him know. Flyers announcing the B-17 s arrival are available. Pick one up at our monthly dinner and display it somewhere to assist in the advertising of the event. Flight Simulator: Pres. Jim B. continues to search for someone with hangar/garage space to house the simulator when it is not use. He reported he confirmed with Airport Management that a canvas enclosure would be acceptable if we choose to go that way. Barbara C. reported the event coming up at Simpson College March 18, 2017, this Saturday. Volunteers are sorely needed to be checked out in the simulator operation and otherwise help at the college. Also the following Thursday, March 23, 2017, volunteers are needed to show and operate the simulator at Parsons Junior High School. Can you help? Call Pres. Jim Bremer and let him know. jim@eaa157.org 530 222 8001. Housekeeping: Pres. Jim B. purchased ten more padded chairs for the quonset hut as requested last month. The chairs have been Scotch-Guarded for added protection. It has rounded out the padded chairs for our dinner tables. Thanks, Jim. Chapter Goals for 2017: Pres. Jim B. presented his vision for our Chapter goals for 2017. In brief they are: 1) Seek out opportunities for exposing our Simulator to the public. 2) Promote Young Eagle Flights working with Corning and Red Bluff airport communities as well as Benton. 3) Promote aviation at the local High Schools. 4) Octoberfest promotion. 5) Possible B-17 visit. 6) Developing a history of our Chapter 157 since its beginning 1963. New Business: Chimney Repair: It was reported that the wood stove chimney pipe needs to be replaced. Barbara C. suggested that it would be a Work Day project that we could do. Another item that could be added is the installation of a new ceiling fan. A Work Day will be scheduled. Chapter Dinner Meeting will be March 21, 2017 The dinner this month will be our traditional Irish corn beef and cabbage with all the associated trimmings. All will be prepared by our own celebrated chefs just returned from Ireland in their Ercoupe with the latest old country recipes. Ray Collins, Julie Ostendorf (couldn t go to Ireland no room) and Irwin Fust will do the honors. Come enjoy and most of all the Fellowship of Kindred Birds of the Air. Invite a friend and ya all come! We ll have the heater err stove going. Note: On the last page of this Newsletter you will find a sign up list for volunteering to prepare at least one (more if you choose) Chapter dinner during the year of 2017. Will you help? Thrill us with a menu from your store house of par excellence cooking.. Call Dick W. (246 9131) let him know which month you can do it. Just four months left to choose from. Thank you. 2

March Dinner Program The world of General Aviation is changing. Two of the topics that are on the minds of pilots these days are BasicMed, how can I legally fly my airplane with just my driver's license as my medical, and ADS-B out, how do I go about equipping my aircraft for the upcoming mandate without breaking the bank? Redding EAA member Irwin Fust will give you all of the answers to your questions. Come for dinner and afterwards an informative discussion. We might even have time for a short quiz on Airspace. Motion by (Dick W.) Steve W. and Second by Barbara C. the Meeting be adjourned. Motion passed. The Chapter currently has a total of $165 credits from 2016 YE Flights that were flown. flylady@frontiernet.net Aircraft Builders AIRCRAFT UNDER CONSTRUCTION/RESTORATION In recent discussions, the Board of Directors realized we don't know how many homebuilders there are in the area, or who they are. We set about creating a list of the builders we know of, to build a resource for helping one another and networking. For example, if someone has a problem with some aspect of building a particular model of RV, the list could help him find someone who has experience with that aircraft. Another purpose for the list could be to contact homebuilders who are not Chapter members to encourage them to attend meetings and join the Chapter. Another purpose for the list could be as a resource to invite homebuilders to occasionally participate as panel members for a program for a regular meeting of the whole membership, to discuss aspects of homebuilding that would be of general interest. Reminder an update is needed! To make this resource successful, we need your help. Attached is a start of a list of homebuilders who fly out of either Benton Field or Redding Muni. It needs to be updated. As you will see, we don't have a complete list of mail and/or phone numbers and there may be other homebuilders that should be on the list. If you know a phone number, email address or other names, please send an email to Herb Zuidema herb@eaa157.org 530 275 5103 3
