UE IQ ALL ABOUT SOUTH AFRICA WELCOME TO THE RAINBOW NATION! South Africa, as can be gathered from its name, is the country furthest to the south of the African continent. It is a vast country in terms of land area and has varying plateaus and climates from province to province. It is bounded on the south by 2,798 kilometers of coastline of southern Africa stretching along the Atlantic and Indian Oceans. South Africa is the 25th-largest country in the world by land area, and with close to 53 million people, is the world s 24th-most populous nation. Prided as the Rainbow Nation, South Africa is a multicultural society and is the only country in the world to have 11 official languages and national anthem using those different languages. Although English is spoken widely in across the country, it is surprisingly ranked as fourth on the list of official languages behind Afrikaans, Zulu and Xhosa. OUR WORK IN SOUTH AFRICA B AM OZ M SWAZILAND > H SOUTICA AFR CULTURE & HISTORY The country boasts some of the world s most exciting attractions ranging from natural scenery, beaches and wildlife to bustling cities rich in cultural diversity. Cape Town is known as the Mother City and encapsulates much of the diversity South Africa is famous for. It is steeped in history but is also one of the world s most beautiful cities. With its dramatic mountain backdrops and white sand beaches with an amazing diversity of cultures and associated urban life, it is hard to beat. In 1990 President Frederik Willem de Klerk began negotiations to end apartheid, culminating in multi-racial democratic elections in 1994, won by the African National Congress (ANC) under Nelson Mandela. Since the ruling African National Congress (ANC) has made strides to overcome the historic segregation and create unified national loyalties on the basis of equal rights and access to amenities for all. South Africa is a young nation in its current form, and although peaceful it is facing challenges relating to poverty, health, education, inequalities and housing in particular. Approximately 1.9 million informal shacks exist in here, which provide poor quality living environments, with limited access to amenities such as water and electricity and are extremely vulnerable to fire and weather damage. The population living in these informal shacks and also in more legal versions, called Townships, are generally those facing poverty, unemployment, poor health, high rates of HIV/AIDS, and have little access to education. There is a large gap creating inequalities in the quality of the lives amongst South Africa s population. Although once ravaged by the apartheid regime, South Africa is a young nation in its current form; has fast become a melting pot of cultures and has moved towards international acclaim for its diversity and beauty. Our primary target communities are around the Hout Bay area where we engage and empower youth in education and personal development activities, with the hope of improved future options and avoidance of negative behaviours such as substance use and joining gangs. We also support social enterprise to assist with employment and skill transfer to local community members. SOUTH AFRICAN WEATHER You will be working in an urban township, where modesty will be an important factor to remember as you work with local people. Making sure you dress appropriately will be important to gaining the respect of your partners. More information about the dress code will follow in the preflight guide. February is the hottest month in Cape Town with an average temperature of 23 C (73 F) and the coldest is June at 13 C (55 F) with the most daily sunshine hours at 11.05 in December. The wettest month is July with an average of 100mm of rain.

SOUTH AFRICA SUPPORT FOR PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES Apart from the normal struggles of living with a disability, social stigma and discrimination surrounding disabilities mean that People With Disabilities (PWD) face even greater challenges. In many instances, PWDs are not afforded the same opportunities as regular members of society, and this in turn means they are often unable to contribute productively to their communities. Your role will be based in a local care centre, which provides social activities, food, assistance with day-to-day life and vocational training. You will work alongside centre staff, assisting them and taking on responsibilities as your skills and experience allows. It was discovered by medical workers that persons with disabilities were not accessing medical treatment and services, many were left at home alone with no assistance and some without food. They were also facing negative social attitudes and perceptions, and social stigma. ACCOMMODATION & MEALS During your stay you will be accommodated in an award winning Hout Bay Backpackers, in Hout Bay. Three meals a day will also be provided, some on a self-serve basis and others cooked for you. PROJECT START DATES Start date for this project is the first Monday of the month throughout the year, with the exception of December when the project is closed. INCLUDED IN THE COST Comprehensive 24 hour, 7 day a week support from All Out Africa Volunteer projects specifically designed to enable you to make an active contribution during your stay Support of volunteer project coordinators who are experts in their fields which ensures the volunteer experience is valuable Comprehensive orientation to the country, its culture and your role as a volunteer upon arrival All food and accommodation throughout your stay VOLUNTEER ROLE Your role is based at a local registered care centre which provides services for 20 30 adults with either physical or intellectual disabilities. The centre is staffed with volunteers who provide support and community-based rehabilitation. As a volunteer you may get involved in many of the following activities: Social interaction with clients and assisting them with their day-to-day activities in the centre Supporting the centre and their clients to generate income through making arts and crafts items and selling them within the local community Assisting with vocation and skills based training Helping out in the kitchen and in the garden to provide nutritious meals for clients Tell the residents stories about your home and travels help them explore the world despite their physical challenges. * Please note that the activities listed above are based on availbility and may vary by season. These are samples of activities that are volunteers are likely to participate in. WHERE YOUR PROJECT FEE GOES By signing up with us you are donating your time and skills to work directly with communities in need through a structured project. There are many benefits of

volunteering through an organization like ours. Sometimes it is hard to find projects to support in a foreign country that are safe, worthwhile, and reputable. When you sign-up for one of our projects for 2 or 12 weeks, you become part of a bigger, sustainable plan that our team of qualified staff have carefully crafted. You will also receive travel and visa support, orientation, a safe place to stay, logistical support, in addition to clear expectations of the work you will do. This is why we charge a fee for volunteering or interning abroad. Your project fee goes towards a company you can trust, an experience that is worthwhile and an opportunity that will make a positive and sustainable impact on the community you have chosen to serve. RESERVE YOUR SPACE WITH A 10% DEPOSIT! 2 Weeks For $1081 3 Weeks For $1312 4 Weeks For $1482 6 Weeks For $1914 *Prices listed in US Dollar.
